Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

The most valuable gift you can possess is a honest friend. Many a times, some people come into our lives and quickly go; but, some stay for a while and leave footprints on our hearts. Ace Cinematographer turned director Sanjay Jadhav’s latest film ‘Duniyadari’ presents a plot based on such theme, which is inspired from best seller ‘Duniyadari’ by eminent writer Late Shri Suhas Shirwalkar Though primarily set on the backdrop of 1970’s, the happenings in this romantic emotion filled love story, still relates to the youth of today, as screenplay writer Chinmay Mandlekar has made few changes to suit the cinematic form.

So, we find Shreyas Talwalkar (Swapnil Joshi) a young boy in his 20s from Mumbai, caught up in a bad father and mother (Uday Tikekar- Varsha Usgaonkar) relationship. After scoring poor passing marks in graduation, he is sent by his mother to Pune’s S. P. College for his post graduation. He finds his accommodation in college hostel and encounters notorious Digya alias DSP (Ankush Choudhary) and his Katta Gang comprising of Ashkya, Nitys, Sorry, Sunil and Umya, a bunch of hooligans. Digya is in relationship with his long time neighbourhood friend Surekha (Richa Pariyali), who is also part of the gang.

The katta gang members add vibrant colours to the otherwise disturbed life of Shreyas ,who is from a rich family , but deprived of love and friendship. The gang come across a brother and sister duo of Pritam and Shirin (Sushant Shelar and Sai Tamhankar), who are children of a renowned MLA. Pritam who is also student of Post graduate studies, becomes friendly with Shreyas and his other friends, while Shirin who is a medical student, is a frequent visitor to their college. It is actually love at first sight for Shireen, when she first meets Shreyas. The friendship grows. But, in between Digya and his friends suggest Shreyas to become friendly with Police Inspector’s daughter Meenakshi alias Meenu ( Urmila kanitkar Kothare) taking it as a challenge to teach a lesson to her adamant father.

Duniyadari Review

The assembly of these characters is enough for the film to progress with its screenplay with sequence of scenes between Meenu and Shreyas, Shireen and Shreyas, Digya and Sainath alias Sai( Jitendra Joshi) – from a rival gang and local politician’s son. Jealous about the growing friendship between Digya and Shreyas, Akshya breaks away from the group and joins Sai’s group. We also find Sai playing his clever game, proposing Shirin through his political connections. Watching Shreyas coming closer to Meenu, Shirin accepts Sai’s proposal. But, she still tries to be a good friend of Shreyas. Also, with the help of her brother, she brings Meenu closer to Shreyas. Now, in a dilemma, Shreyas declares his love for Meenu , in presence of Shireen; but is not happy. Even Digya finds his beloved getting married to a stranger, at the behest of her parents, who don’t approve Digya.

Many events unfold thereafter, through frequent flashbacks; as the entire story is shown in a series of flashbacks, which is a new style adopted by the director. You also find its link to the story of Shreyas’ mother, who reveals the truth to Shreyas , after his father’s untimely death. It is after that you find a sudden change in attitude of Shreyas, who moves ahead with his changed plan, to take you through a filmy climax .

Director Sanjay Jadhav seems to have paid more attention on presentation of every character from his film, with lot of perfection on their costumes and styles suited to the period of 70s. Watch the bell bottoms of boys, long side locks of Ajinkya, long hair style of Jitendra and costumes of all characters. They are all perfectly styled. What looks unrealistic is the climax, which goes on the lines of Bollywood films of 70s and 80s. Smoking cigarettes by the characters including Shireen-a medical student, has been shown more than required. Her regular visits to S. P. College and that too once in their library looks unnatural. Not much attention has been paid on the make up of the artistes in the older look, except for their grey hair. Even the names of the katta members engraved on the katta, are noticed during the reunion after almost 40-50 years, which is something strange.

But, the fine performances by all the artistes in the film make you overlook these minor errors. ‘Duniyadari’ is a film that mainly revolves around two main characters, Shreyas and Shireen, which is in narrative form from Shireen’s point of view. In the character of Shireen, Sai Tamhankar has found an important role to display her real acting skills. Till now, she was being used more as a glamour girl. Swapnil, was expected to deliver his best and he has played his role with total commitment to his character. His total involvement in the character, can be clearly noticed in this film.

In the role of Digya, Ankush Chaudhary is a perfect choice. He impresses with his tall angry young man looks and actions. Jitendra Joshi presents a rowdy young villain in style, paying more attention on his attire and dialogue delivery. Though Urmila kanitkar kothare finds a limited role, she plays an important character in the film, displaying her emotions clearly. Even Richa Pariyali in her limited role, finds an opportunity in one particular scene, to display her emotions. Sushant Shelar’s Pritam is convincing and so is Ajainkya Joshi’s Ashkya.

In this film, Sandeep Kulkarni surprises with his special appearance. He hardly has 2- 3 scenes; but he creates an impact through them. In the supporting cast, Varsha Usgaonkar, Uday Tikekar and others offer good backing. Music by Sameer Satoskar, Pankaj and Amit Raj is good for a change. Director Sanjay Jadhav has paid complete attention on direction, as he has handed over the responsibility of cinematography to Prasad Bhende in this film, who has done a good job. No wonder, there is sincere effort put in by entire team in presenting this strong script backed film.

‘Duniyadari’ is about Dil, Dosti n Prestine Love story

Ankush Chaudhari, Swapnil Joshi, DUniyadari

Once addicted, you can’t restrict three things. i.e. Dil, Dosti n Duniyadari. Forthcoming Marathi film “Duniyadari” is an Eastman Color Love Story, which promises to sprinkle the colors of friendship n love from 19th July , across Maharashtra. It’s a much talked about film in Marathi Entertainment Industry.

Suitably tagged as an Eastman Color Love Story, ‘Duniyadari’ is set on the backdrop of 70’s and has relevance to youth of current generation. The film is inspired by a beautiful phase put across by eminent Marathi novelist late Shri Suhas Shirvalkar.

After the completion of the film shooting, Producer & Director Sanjay Jadhav came out with a fantastic concept of making 11 artists from Marathi Film Industry sing a song for this film. The catchy lyrics… Zindagi Zindagi… Doston Ki Duniyadari Mein Haseen Meri Zindagi…happened to be so good, that immediately Sanjay Jadhav came out with the novel idea of getting this friendship song sung by as many artist singers as he could. Above all they sang without any remuneration as they had strong liking to the feel of the song & enjoyed singing it.

Highlight of this film is that it is for the first time that a title song has been sung by 11 leading artists namely: Sachin Pilgaonkar, Mahesh Manjrekar, Sumit Raghavan, Sunil Barve, Prasad Oak, Kedar shinde, Pandharinath Kambli, Siddhartha Jadhav, Vaibhav Mangle, Ankush Chaudhari and Swapnil Joshi, who have rendered their voice for recording this song of ‘Duniyadari’.

The music for this song ‘Zindagi Zindagi’… song has been composed by ‘SAY band’ and lyrics penned by Sachin Pathak alias ‘Yo’ of the same SAY band. A perfect blend of Marathi and Hindi words have been mixed well in the lyrical composition of this song. The music will be released by Nanubhai Jaisi of “Video Palace”. The film’s star cast comprises of Ankush Chaudhari, Swapnil Joshi, Sai Tamhankar, Jitendra Joshi, Urmila Kanetkar, Richa Pariyalli, Varsha Usgaonkar, Uday Tikekar, Sushant Shelar & Uday Sabnis. It’s a dream project of Sanjay Jadhav under banner Dreaming Twenty Four Seven and is presented by ZEE Talkies n Video Palace, with distribution by ESSEL VISION PVT LTD.

Amusing ‘TIME PLEASE – Gosht Lagnanantarchi’ is targeted at young couples

Time Please Marathi Movie

Producers: Anish Jog, Saurabh Gadgil
Director: Sameer Vidwans
Music: Hrishikesh Kamerkar
Cast: Umesh Kamat, Siddharth Jadhav, Priya Bapat-Kamat, Saie Tamhankar
Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Trust in a relationship is everything. Whether it is a friendly relationship or a marriage. Without respect, love is lost. Without caring, love is boring. Without honesty, love is unhappy. Without trust, love is unstable. And life becomes miserable for those who pass through such a strained relationship. Based on this theme, director Sameer Vidwans and script writer Kshitij Patwardhan first presented a Marathi play ‘Nava Gadee Nave Rajya’, which became a hit. The play still draws a good crowd at auditoriums.

Now, the makers of this play have presented a film ‘Time Please! Love story Lagnanantarchi’ by making suitable changes in the script, to suit the cinematic form. So, we find the same lead stars and real life couple Umesh kamat and Priya Bapat, playing the screen couple- Hrishikesh and Amruta in this film, in the company of Siddharth Jadhav as Himmatrao and Saie Tamhankar as Radhika. In the original play the supporting roles were played by Hemant Dhome and Prajakta Datar respectively.

It may be recalled that though the play had its own limitations, the fine performances of the four artistes, their perfect timing and their spontaneous body language created a hilarious comedy. The play reached popularity heights and perhaps that was the reason for giving it a cinematic look. There is no doubt that the director and script writer have taken cinematic liberties to re write the script and add some more scenes to make the film more interesting; i.e. inclusion of songs, one of them being an item number pictured on Siddharth Jadhav and other artistes, during a Bollywood theme party in a unique style.

The film begins well with introduction of the lead characters Hrishikesh and Amruta and creating an atmosphere conducive for the entry of Himmatrao and Radhika, one after the other. But, the re entry of Radhika in the life of Hrishikesh causes more disturbance to Amruta; than return of Siddharth as a good old friend in the life of Amruta, for Hrishikesh. Being much younger to Hrishikesh ( Six year’s difference) causes more misunderstandings between the couple; with Amruta seriously thinking about separation. When their relationship is on the verge of a break, both Himmatrao and Radhika come to their rescue, calling for an happy end.
 Time Please

In the film, an unexpected arrival of Himmatrao in the house of the young couple and that too staying for few days, with his kiddish behaviour and closeness with the lady of the house, does create humour ;but, a peculiar scene, when Hrishikesh brings Radhika to his own house, knowing that his wife is away, doesn’t go well. In this scene, he consoles her, after listening to her story and later gives her a Mubnnabhai style Jhappi. Radhika takes this as a hint and walks into his bedroom, when Hrishikesh pushes her back . Then he tries to persuade her to leave, when she is once again into the arms of Hrishikesh. It is at this moment, Amruta walks in by opening the door. Seeing them in such a position, she leaves the house, preparing for a divorce. This looks like a typical filmy scene of misunderstandings.

Actually, there are few flaws in the film, related to unsuitable sequencing of the happenings. But, the timely Dialogues match well with the humour, at appropriate places. All the four artistes in the film have given wonderful performances. Music by Hrishikesh kamerkar is apt at two situations, with one male item number on Siddharth. Even the title song is good. Photography by Abhijit Abdhe is superb. His skilful camera work has captured the close ups and outdoor scenes very well. The last scene at the lighthouse is well taken.

Both Umesh and Priya have worked very hard on their emotional outbursts, besides displaying their happy moments together very naturally. Siddharth Jadhav has proved that his choice was not wrong for the role offered to him. He plays the happy go lucky Himmatrao in his style. In the role of Radhika, Sai Tamhankar is simply superb ! It seems that the film makers have spotted the real talent within her and Radhika is the best suited role for her.

But, why they should show her smoking all the time? Are the film makers not aware of the dangers of smoking among females ? It does pass a wrong message, at a time when Government has imposed anti-tobacco film before the start of such films. Others in the character roles, like Seema Deshmukh, Madhav Abhaynakar and Vandana Gupte have offered good support. This 2 hours 12 minute long film is amusing; but could have been still better, if more convincing outdoor sequences were added into the screenplay, taking the cinematic liberties. The film is timely and does pass a valid message to the young married couples; about the importance of ‘trust’ in each other. It also shows the limitations on involvement of old friends into an individual’s personal life, especially after marriage; unless both the partners know them well.

‘Zapatlela 2′ is more of fantasy than a scary film

Zapatalela 2

Producer: Adinath Kothare
Director: Mahesh Kothare
Music: Avdhoot Gupte
Cast: Adinath Kothare, Mahesh Kothare, Sonalee Kulkarni, Sai Tamhankar, Makrand Anaspur
Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Known for offering something new through his films, for the past few years, Mahesh kothare has offered more technicalities through his every film, as a director. He has brought a number of innovations, which included first cinemascope film in Marathi through ‘Dhadakebaaz’ followed by Dolby Digital Sound through ‘Chimni Pakhare’ , Computer generated effects through ‘Pachadlela’, Marathi’s first Sci- fi through ‘Zabardast’ and now 3D, Animatronics and state of the art Computer Graphics in the current sequel of his 1993 super hit film ‘Zapatlela’. Therefore, there were high expectations from his new film.

‘Zapatlela 2′ has thus turned out to be more of fantasy than a scary film, as predicted. This time, the stylish actor turned director seemed to have paid more attention on his favourite puppet ‘Tatya Vinchoo’ and the situation arising after his resuscitation in the beginning of the film. In this second part, we find Kubadya Khavis (Abhijit Chavan) visiting a museum in search of this puppet and after finding it, takes it Baba Chamatkar (Raghvendra Kadkol) to revive him, as the puppet lies lifeless for years, after being shot by Police Officer Mahesh Jadhav in the prequel. He succeeds in doing it; and tries to finish Baba Chamatkar but in the process he dies. Baba Chamatkar goes into Coma.
In the meanwhile, Tatya Vinchoo learning about Lakshya’s death, comes to know that he can enter the soul of his son Adi (Adinath Kothare) who lives with his Grandmother (Madhu Kambikar) in Shrirangpur. It’s time for annual fair at Shrirangpur and there are people like Champa Satarkar (Vishakha Subhedar) camping with her Lavani in a tent house and famous ventriloquist Makarand Watvate (Makarand Anaspure) performing his shows. Adi meets Champa Satarkar’s mod daughter Megha (Sonalee Kulkarni) who studies in Fergusson College and is with her mother for vacation. It’s love at first sight for both. On the other side, Makarand falls in love with visiting TV Journalist (Saie Tamhankar). Adi is also attracted to the art of Makarand, as his father once practiced this profession.

In the film, Tatya Vinchoo’s journey towards his target begins with his first interaction with Saie Tamhankar, followed by Makarand Anaspure and finally reaching Adi through the Guard and Sonalee. The director shoots his climax in traditional style at the Giant wheel in the fair. As predicted, we see the end of Tatya Vinchoo, but certainly giving a clue that he would return again. Will there be ‘Zapatlela 3′ ? Let us wait for the announcement.

‘Zapatlela 2′ is a technically sound film, with good use of 3D and special effects, which are attempted for the first time in Marathi; but, the absence of Lakshya Berde is certainly felt. This does not mean that Adinath hasn’t done well. In fact, he has done his level best in that role, in his own style. The otherwise young chocolate Marathi hero, who has given fine performances in films like ‘Dubhang’ and ‘Satarangee Re’ did try to look different with a simple ‘Boy next door’ image; but, frankly speaking, he did not match up with the character he played.
Zapatlela 2

It was felt that to carry forward the humour created by Lakshya, the director should have opted for an actor well versed with comedy. He could have thought of anyone from among ace comedians like Makarand Anaspure, Sanjay Narvekar or even Siddharth Jadhav or Nilesh Sable, if he needed someone young like Adi, to play Lakshya’s son . And the role of Makya could have easily suited Adi, who is shown as the son of late Lakshya (a ventriloquist) in the film.

Very wisely the director has used other characters, including his own character of Mahesh Jadhav ,which was shown as turning Police Chief now, after a gap of 20 years. As a director, he has given enough scope to Sonalee, to exploit her glamour through all those scenes to her share. Makarand’s character should have been developed more, considering its importance in the film. Saie Tamhankar’s character in the film is just namesake, to create a girlfriend for Makarand. In one sequence, she just remains an observer, watching Makrand perform his tricks during the show. Madhu Kambikar as Grandmother, Vishakha Subhedar as Champa Satarkar, Vijay Chavan as Hawaldar promoted as Inspector and Deepak Shirke as the Guard on duty at Makarand’s tent, have performed well.
Makarand Anaspure

Production designer Nitin Desai has created fine sets suited to different situations and the superb cinematography of Suresh Deshmane makes the film more presentable besides the 3D effect. Avadhoot Gupte’s music is just fine on the lyrics of Guru Thakur. The sound effects have been used well. The work Umesh Jadhav & Phulwa Khamkar as choreographers is clearly noticed, in the Lavani performance by Sonalee. So are the Visual Effects by Enrik Kriyado. The hard work put in by Ramdas Padhye and his son in making of ‘Tatya Vinchoo’ is also to be appreciated.

The film cannot be compared with its prequel; but, is a clean family entertainer for its fantasy part, if viewed in 3D format. Don’t try to find logic in some of the sequences involving the Puppet. After all, it’s the first Marathi film in 3D form and to be appreciated for the effort. The kids would love it, as it is not so scary, as expected. It is certainly better than Bollywood’s ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana -2′ released simultaneously, on the same day.

Devious ‘Pune52′ is a path breaking Marathi film

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created his fictional detective in the form of Sherlock Holmes. Now, Australia returned film maker Nikhil Mahajan has dared to create his Amar Apte as private detective in latest Marathi film ‘Pune 52’ in his own style. Moreover, as claimed in the credits, that the film is based on a true story, this film is expected to draw attention.
Set on the backdrop of early 90s, it is the story of a private detective Amar Apte (Girish Kulkarni) from Pune, who operates from his old house, in an adjacent room with a separate entrance. Amar sneaks into the personal lives of others, especially those adulterous wives, as part of his assignment. During one such assignment, he clicks a builder (Kiran Karmarkar)in his private acts ; who sends police to his house to recover the amount from his wife, for interfering into his personal life.

Girish Kulkarni,
In comes, Neha, who introduces herself as the same Builder’s wife and hires Amar on an assignment. She even pays him advance. However, Amar, who is disturbed by his demanding wife Prachi (Sonali Kulkarni Sr.) gets trapped into Neha’s seductive nature. This has given ample scope to the film maker to show some hot intimate scenes between Amar and Neha. But, for filming these intimate scenes between Girish Kulkarni and Sai Tamhankar , the film has received ‘A’ certification. Obviously, this has invited the attention of Marathi audience; since not many youngsters below 18, are otherwise keen on watching Marathi films. Not a bad idea!
The pre- interval session of the film is bit slow, as the plot of the film doesn’t become clear till interval. It is only in post –interval stage , the film generates interest among the audience. It is a sincere effort by the director to incorporate twists and turns; which only the true film lovers are able to understand. Other wise, watching this film in a theatre, would also invite lewd remarks from a section of audience, on certain scenes; as witnessed by this critic in Movie Time- Hub, on the first day. The film is technically well made, with perfect sound effects & suitable background music by Atif Afzal. Wonderful cinematography by Jeremy Reagen from New Zealand, makes this film more appealing. Watch some of the scenes shot in dark and those in close up. It’s a remarkable work.
Girish Kulkarni finds a totally different kind of role through this film and he has given justice to his charater. Sonali Kulkarni finds a suitable role of his wife, who has cleverly shown quick change of behaviour in her character, as per the requirement of the script. Sai Tamhankar is at her best. She perfectly fits into the role of Neha. It was nice to see Kiran Karmarkar playing that intricate character of a builder, with ease. Bharati Achrekar plays a convincing mother in law of Amar Apte. Though there is a mention about Amar’s father-in-law, his appearance has been cleverly avoided.
To say something about the complex screenplay, few sluggish scenes should have been edited to make the film more interesting in the first part of the film. Otherwise, the film has turned out to be a devious path breaking film in Marathi. The English sub titles are expected to turn in favour of the film.

‘No Entry’ entertains; but, lacks Marathi touch

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Well, we are all aware that new Marathi film ‘No Entry Pudhe Dhoka Aahey’ is a remake of popular Hindi comedy ‘No Entry’. But, while making this film in Marathi, the entire film has been copied scene to scene, instead of offering it a Marathi touch. As a result, it has failed to hold the audience for entire 163 minute show on the screen. Nevertheless, being a sit- com, the film has succeeded in offering the expected entertainment through good performances coming from all the seven important artistes in the film.

The original film had succeeded in creating laughter, because the theme was new to the audience. Moreover, in Maharashtra most of the Marathi film goers watch Hindi films. Even if they haven’t watched this original film in theatres, they must have surely watched it on their TV screens and that too in repeat runs. All that was expected was a Marathi touch to this theme; but, it has gone the Bollywood way, even to the extent of retaining the names of all the characters. If they could change the name of MLA, why couldn’t they find suitable names for seven important characters ?
Aniket Bharat Ankush

When we see some of the remakes of South films in Hindi, these original films are not watched by majority of the cine goers from places other than south region. And hence, such films whether action or comedy, turn out to be successful in North India including Maharashtra. But, same is not the case, with remake of Hindi film in Marathi. It may be kept in mind that about 50 % of the Hindi film’s business is from Maharashtra.

Now, the million dollar question still remains to be answered is, whether a remake of popular Hindi comedy film and that too with predictable sequences, will be accepted in Marathi ? Let, the people of Maharashtra decide the fate of this film. The opening day, witnessed very poor response at a multiplex in the suburbs. Now, the weekend collections will decide the success of this film.

Looking at the efforts put in, it may be mentioned that the film has been shot with the high quality standard observed in big budget Hindi cinema,, with good camera work by Arwind Soni and perfect music by Nakash-Sargam. The selection of locations are good, including picturesque Goa. Even the titles of the film have been presented well. But, there seemed to be some budgeting on costumes of the artistes and the dancers in the song sequences. In the case of Sai Tamhankar, who played an important character of Bobby, there wasn’t much issue of costumes, as the film has been focused on her. She is the centre of attraction in this film. And, she has lived up to the expectations of the film maker. One can say that she has offered more than what Bipasha could offer in the original, as far as glamour is concerned.

Looking at the performances of others, both Bharat Jadhav as Kishan and Kranti Redkar as Kajal match well in their respective roles, with their perfect timing for comedy. Aniket Vishwasrao as Shekhar gets a kind of role, which has tested his strengths in comedy sequences. And he has done extremely well. Manwa Naik playing Sanjana also supports well as his partner. Both Ankush Choudhary (Prem) and Sai Lokur (his wife Pooja) have limited scope, especially after interval, but they too have done well. Paddy kamble is just fine as Bobby’s bodyguard. Anant Jog is good as fun loving MLA. Viju Khote does well in the small role, he has to his share.

As predicted, this film is a musical sitcom with good performances. But, it has certainly failed to offer the Marathi feel to the characters.

‘Zhakaas’ situation based comedy

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Situation based comedy is back again into Marathi films. Zee Talkies, who presented their last film ‘Mast Chalalay Aamcha’ in this fashion, are back again with another production in the name of ‘Zhakaas’ directed by Ankush Choudhary, who besides acting has also penned the dialogues of this film along with Nitin Dixit. In the beginning of the film, the director does not hide anything from the viewers and gives a clear hint that the three different characters Subhanya, Sandy and Suhas are played by one person ( Ankush Choudhary) in different get ups. You may call him an imposter or Bluff master; but, he flirts with three different girls Manjula ( Amruta Khanvilkar) , Neha (Saie Tamhankar) and Ashwini( Pooja Sawant) at different times.

That reminds us of Prashant Damle plays or TV serials on a similar subjects, but in this film Ankush Choudhary’s character is not married playing double parts but a bachelor 3 in 1 , as indicated through the script. Whenever the hero is in trouble and about to be caught, he seeks help from his loyal friend ( Jitendra Joshi) . All the three girls have their well wishers ( Pushakar Shrotri, Sanjay Khapre and Vikas Samudre) around them, who are deeply in love with them and do not approve their love for Subhnya alias Sandy alias Suhas. They play all their gimmicks to keep the girls away from this Bluff master. But, our hero plays his trick to fool all the three men at a time, posing himself as CBI officer, on a mission.

Till interval, viewers having left their brains at home to watch such a situation based comedy are happy with the plot. But, in the post interval session they find the film moving in Priyadarshan style, without much of hold . Some of the scenes have been well captured; but for that one should thank Cinematographer Sanjay Jadhav and the team involved in expert editing and special effects. Finally, you find the film concluding the way the actor- director felt right. There is no explanation, as to why the hero of the film played this act. We can just assume it that it was just for fun.
Ankush Chaudhari

Whether the plot convinces the viewers or it taxes them, ‘Zhakaas’ has succeeded in inviting a sizable crowd to multiplexes with half filled halls on this weekend.

It has also succeeded in creating that laughter among the audience through many scenes; but it has failed to hold the audience to their seats, with non stop laughter; the way ‘Mast Chalalay Aamcha’ managed it. The manner in which the three girls have been presented in different get ups is to be appreciated. While the character of Neha played by Saie Tamhankar is shown as an independent girl doing photography, Pooja Sawant plays an ad agency owner wearing Indian style of dresses with matured looks. However, it is Amruta kahnvilkar in that typical village type but glamorous looks, invites all the attention. Her perfect accent suited to that character of Manjula has brought liveliness in every scene that she appears.
Ankush Choudhary, the tall and handsome hero of Marathi films, suits in that character but he has not used any extra ordinary skills in presenting three different roles, except for changing his get ups. But, all the four men in supporting roles namely Pushkar Shrotri, Sanjay Khapre, Vikas Samudre and Jitendra Joshi have played their respective roles with total sincerity and they matched well with their perfect timing to create those humour filled scenes . Even Atul Parchure is good in that small but effective role of an inspector. The characters of a Liftman and the Policeman blowing whistle, have been used well. The film does not have much scope for music and hence the work of Abhijeet Kavthalkar could not be noticed much in the film, except for the title music. The way the film has concluded, it gives an impression that this bluff master is going to return soon. Looking at the strengths and few weaknesses of this film, it has turned out to be a fun filled average family entertainer, mainly because of the fine performances by the artistes.

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Known for his in depth knowledge about the village culture and presenting its contrast with new city lifestyle, Gajendra Ahire has in the past offered some sensible films. This time through his new film ‘Sumbaraan- Soneri divsaachya Soneri Athvani’ he shows very effectively the connect between the two places. ‘Sumbaraan’ is a tale of two generations and the changes noticed in their behaviour, with the passage of time. You may call it a touching tale of a village and the people living there.

Veeru (Jitendra Joshi) a struggling Music director is returning along with his elder brother Vasanta (Makarand Anaspure) to his village after a long time to spend their Diwali at their old ancestral house. They are accompanied by Vastanta’s wife (Vrunda Gajendra), Viru’s Friend Sushu (Shushrut Mankani) and his friend Mukta (Saie Tamhankar). On reaching there, though Viru takes it very lightly the arising situations and moreover in his own world, enjoying with his friends. Vasanta decides to sell the property and invites his old friend (Siddharth Jadhav) who is an estate agent.

SumbaraanVasanta, is not happy in his life, remembering his past in the village and his inability to marry his girl friend – Shaku (Swarali Patil) who is the daughter of Biroba belonging to Dhangar community. Vasanta’s father Deshmukh Patil ( Ravindra Mankani) who is having a relationship with a lady from lower caste ( Ashwini Kalsekar) has no voice in the house, as the Mother (Seema Deshmukh) dominates. Vasanta’s younger brother Viru, during his childhood days, however maintains good relationship with Shaku’s younger sister – Kalli (Aditi Bhagwat).

The director has tried to show how attitude of individual matters. The elder brother is not happy in his life, for having ditched his beloved at a crucial stage in his life, while the younger brother is able to understand the situation better; with his own thinking process. In the case of Kalli, who is educated in city in the later part of her life, returns to her village as Dy. Collector. “Education is the key to progress of the society,’ is all that the director has tried to communicate through her character. Very efficiently he has handled the past memories through flash back from time to time.
Throughout the screenplay, the film sticks to its subject, not deviating from the main track. This results in total commitment to the script, which is based on the human relationship with the change of time. Take the character of Ashwini Kalsekar, who plays the keep of Deshmukh Patil, living in his own house. She is also being addressed as Mother, for obvious reasons, by both the children. When Viru returns to his village after a long time, she inquires about the relationship between two of his friends. And, when he tells her that they are in Live-in-relationship; she tries to find the difference between her relationship with his father and the young duo. Ashwini has played her role very efficiently. When kalli meets Viru after a long time, the director has very cleverly shown her maturity with education. Mukta Barve has played that small but sensible role with perfection in the company of Jitendra Joshi. Makarand is at ease in the role of Vasanta and so does Jitendra Joshi.

Shushrut Mankani and Saie Tamhankar are just show pieces in the film, playing Viru’s friends, with nothing much to do except playing Guitar, dancing or diving into the pond for swimming. Ravindra Mankani and Ravi kale are impressive in their respective roles. Seema Deshmukh and Vrunda Gajendra support well. All other artistes including Siddharth Jadhav perfectly fit into their characters, which are so lively.

Special mention about Dushyant Wagh, who displays his talent in that teenager Vasanta’s role. Rahul Ranade’s music is good . Technically, Sumbaraan is a well presented film, reminding one and all about the golden memories of the village life.

Movie Review by: Sandeep Hattangadi

Pushkar Jog- the youngest actor-director of Marathi film industry, who has already proved his ability with ‘Satya’ , now goes a notch ahead with the musical thriller ‘Mission Possible’ which is written and directed by him besides acting.

The story of the film begins with events like dance competitions, turf fights, rose days, drugs and rock-n-roll, leaked exam papers, canteen blues and endless coffee sessions of college campus. Yash Kirtikar (Pushkar Jog ) is an enthusiastic collegian who has a dream girl in his mind, but does not reciprocate the girl Saie (Saie Tamhankar), who really loves him. He has his group of friends funnily named Neil, Nitin, and Mukesh (nothing to do with the actors and singers of Bollywood). Tragedy strikes when Yash and Saie open the lid on a drug and exam paper leak syndicate running in the college. Further, Yash, who is really in love with a girl Pearl (his dream girl-Manisha Kelkar) is implicated in her murder during a dance competition and is sentenced to a jail term.
Manisha Kelkar

Yash with the help of a ‘Bhai’ (Ganesh Yadav) escapes from the prison and with the help of his friends, tries to reach the real killer.

The story and screenplay of Shirish Latkar does remind us of many Bollywood films in the past with similar sub plots. But, Pushkar does a wonderful job as an actor and director and also goes on to prove that he is a fantastic dancer. He has succeeded in giving enough scope to his young team of actors like Niranjan Namjoshi, Sai Tamhankar, Manisha Kelkar, Shantanu Moghe, Astad Kale, and Amrit. The dance sequences are slickly shot in snazzy music video style. The romantic song shot on the locales of Ladakh is comparable with any good Bollywood film picturisation.
The music and background music by Sai-Piyush is in tune with the youthful vibrancy of the film. The cinematography by Sanjay Khanzode is top-class especially in the musical and chase sequences. The film moves at a fast pace, required for a murder mystery and the editor does a good job. The senior actors like Mohan Joshi, Sharad Ponkshe,Ganesh Yadav, support well.

Basically it is a film by the youth and for the youth.

The highlight of the film is its slick presentation and style, a new benchmark in Marathi cinema.
