‘Hote Kurup Vede’ will be Sanjay Narvekar’s 25th play
Known for his hit Marathi plays ‘All The Best‘, ‘Adhantar‘, ‘Ashi Pakhare Yeti‘ and ‘Locha Jhala Re‘, actor Sanjay Narvekar shot into fame after his performance as ‘Dedh Footya‘ in the Hindi film ‘Vastav’, which offered him more and more roles in Hindi cinema. In fact, Sanjay Narvekar has done more number of Hindi films than Marathi films in his acting career span of about 25 years. But, as a Marathi stage actor, he is still popular.
Incidentally, with his latest Marathi play ‘Hote Kurup Vede‘ which will stage its first show on 11th January @ 3.30 pm at Shivaji Mandir, Dadar, Sanjay has performed in 25 different plays till date. And another coincidence is that this play will also be the 25th play of director Mr. Rajesh Deshpande . Both Sanjay and Rajesh have worked together in the past and hence their coming together through this new play has made both of them very happy. Working with them in this play are other important artistes like Nayan Jadhav, Bharat Savale, Shalaka Pawar, Meenakshi Joshi, & Kalpesh Bawiskar.
Renowned Marathi stage and film actor Vijay Chavan no more
Renowned Marathi actor known for his comedy roles in Marathi plays and films, is no more. He was 63. He is survived by his wife and son Varad who is also an actor. Vijay Chavan breathed his last today morning at Fortis Hospital, Mulund, Mumbai, where he was admitted few days ago . He was suffering from ailment for the past few years. Very recently, he was conferred with the prestigious State award for Lifetime Achievement at the Maharashtra State Marathi film awards, at the hands of Chief Minister of Maharashtra Mr. Devendra Fadnavis and in presence of State Cultural Minister Mr. Vinod Tawde. On this occasion, he was brought on a wheel chair by his son Varad. But, even in that condition he gave an inspiring speech indicating his willingness to perform more and more roles.
Mr. Chavan had performed in about 350 films, which also included few Hindi films. Most of his roles were comedy roles and what was good about him was that he established his own identity even in presence of top comedians during late 80s and 90s when he won several awards for his performance. Best thing about him was that he continued to perform in films in spite of his illness, inspiring his fans with a message that ‘the show must go on‘. Vijay Chavan will always be remembered for his superb performance in the hit Marathi play ‘Moruchi Maushi‘ which staged 400 shows. With his passing away, Marathi film industry has lost a very good actor, but he will always be remembered for his variety of roles.
Many veteran artistes like Mahesh Kothare, Ramesh Bhatkar, Sanjay Narvekar who were present for his funeral, paid tributes to their departed friend. Incidentally, Vijay’s son Varad has also established his identity as an actor in Marathi TV serials and films. And, we are sure he will carry forward the legacy of his father.

“I guarantee that ‘Ye Re Ye Re Paisa’ will be a super hit film” – Rohit Shetty
Known for his ‘Golmaal’ series , Rohit Shetty has offered a new kind of humor to Hindi cinema and the audience have appreciated all his films, be it comedy or action. So, when the music of forthcoming humor filled film ‘Ye Re Ye Re Paisa’ was launched in a big way, the makers of this film and presenters Zee Studios could not think of anyone else than Rohit Shetty, to be the chief guest. Accompanied by his favorite actor Shreyas Talpade, Rohit walked towards the dais to join director Sanjay Jadhav in the introductory session of the event. He later released the music CD of this film.
In his short speech he was all praise for the trailer of this film and said, “I guarantee that ‘Ye Re Ye Re Paisa’ will be a super hit film.” When asked about his connection with Marathi artistes and Marathi language, Rohit reacted, “I love Marathi films and Marathi culture and my wife is a Maharashtrian. That’s the big connection. I like Marathi artistes, because they have no ego about their talent. I had very good connect with Siddharth, who is in this film, as he worked in my film ‘Golmaal’ Part 1. “ Talking about Marathi films, he said that he had seen ‘Duniyadari’ three times.
All the lead artistes in the film namely Mrunal Kulkarni, Sanjay Narvekar , Siddharth Jadhav, Tejaswini Pandit & Umesh Kamat were introduced by anchor Poorvi Bhave, by asking them individual questions and all of them praised Cinematographer turned director Sanjay Jadhav for his friendly style of working. Shreyas Talpade, who had come as a special invitee narrated an incidence, how producer Amey Khopkar had helped him to find roles in films, during his days of struggle.
From the first look, it appears that ‘Ye Re Ye Re Paisa’ is a mad comedy, full of misunderstandings and set on the backdrop of demonetization of 500 and 1000 rupee notes. This multi starrer film revolves around five individuals, Aditya, Sunny, Bubly, Anna & Janhavi played by Umesh Kamat, Sidhharth Jadhav, Tejaswini Pandit, Sanjay Narvekar & Mrunal Kulkarni respectively, who try to reach respective ends in their life personally and professionally. But, all five of them get into trouble with each other. It’s a good subject suited for a comedy; but it remains to be seen, how the Marathi audience would respond at ticket windows on 5th January 2018, when the film will be released in theatres. However, when Rohit Shetty has assured the film a grand success it means a lot.
The film is presented by Zee Studios, Produced by Om Prakash Bhatt, Swati Khopkar, Sujay Shankarwar, Rajesh Banga and is directed by Sanjay Jadhav. Story by Sanjay Jadhav, dialogues by Arwind Jagtap, cinematography by Pushpank Gawde, and music by Amitraj & Pankaj Padghan are the other credits.

‘Bhalya’ bats on a sticky wicket
Rating: ★★ ½
Genres: Drama Censor: U Duration: 132 Min. Studio/presenter: Achintya Films, Siddhi Aaradhya Films Producer(s): Chaitali K, Amol Kale Director: Nitin Kamble Writer: Nitin Supekar Music: Trupti Chavan Cinematographer (DOP): I. Giridharan, Shanu Singh Rajput Cast: Nandkumar Solkar, Ramesh Dev, Sanjay Narvekar, Alka Kubal, Ganesh Jadhav, Mitali Jagtap, Sanjay Khapare, Anshuman Vichare, Sharad Ponkshe, Namrata Jadhav, Rajesh Kamble, Sourabh Karvande, Nitin Kamble, Mahesh Kute, Gary, Jeevan Karalkar, Prathamesh Kawle, Sahil Joshi Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
Cricket has always played a big role in the field of entertainment. The subject of cricket has also been used by our Bollywood film makers, through some of the past films. Among them, ‘Iqbal‘ was one of the most impressive films, which generated the desired impact on the audience. In Marathi, we have seen few films based on cricket and among them, ‘Shikshanachya Aaicha Gho‘ tried to show, how cricket and studies cannot go together. Now, film maker Nitin Kamble has presented his subject on discrimination against Aadivasi community, when it comes to including them in the mainstream, be it in education or sports.
So, very thoughtfully he has chosen his subject, but has failed to create the required impact, through the film’s screenplay. In this film, he presents the character of little Bhalya( Nandkumar Solkar) , a boy from Aadivasi community, living in the outskirts of a village, along with his father Shukrya ( Sanjay Narvekar), mother Heera ( Mitali Jagtap) and grandfather( Ramesh Deo). Bhalya is a school drop out, as he cannot afford the fees of the village school . His family earns just enough income for their food. Bhalya spends his time with his friend Ziprya( Saurabh Karvande), roaming around, taking a dip into river and watching the local village school cricket team practicing on the ground. Actually, he is just passionate about this game of cricket and practices with his friend, emulating all the strokes, with his hand made bat. Watching his perfection, he is spotted by school captain, who is the son of a Government officer (Sharad Ponkshe). Like a good Samaritan , he offers him a chance to play, after convincing his school coach ( Sanjay Khapre). With few tips from the coach, Bhalya excels in his batting. But, this overshadows the performance of local politician’s( Ganesh Yadav) obese son, who is the member of school team.
Knowing about the disturbed state of mind of his son, the politician plays all his dirty games. But, that doesn’t stop the progress of Bhalya, who is selected to play for the school’s team, as a dummy for another player. Needless to say that Bhalya does well, hitting that six on the last ball, in the finals. But, the process through which he is given a chance to play for the school team and the decision taken by the committee to pardon the coach, for cheating; is not at all convincing. And, this is where the film fails to appeal. There were many other ways, to include Bhalya in school team, by someone like Desai Couple, or the foreigner Photographer( Gary Tatney) and well wisher of Bhalya, sponsoring his education. But, the director has thought the other way, to help an Aadivasi boy. There is one scene, where the politician comes to threaten the coach on the ground. He asks the coach to bowl him with half a dozen tennis balls brought by him and he hits all the balls with body line attack on the coach, who fails to protect himself. And, this looks funny, rather than a serious scene. The foreigner trying to defend Bhalya’s case before School Cricket Committee, also fails to convince.
However, the performances of the artistes have been exemplary. Nandkumar Solkar, who has played the role of Bhalya, has performed exceptionally well. Sanjay Narvekar impresses with his body language and fluent dialogues in Aadivasi language with that particular accent. Veteran Ramesh Deo, Alka Kubal Athalye, Sharad Ponkshe, Sanjay Khapre, Ganesh Yadav and Anshuman Vichare in negative role and others have offered good support. Music by Trupti Chavan goes well with the village backdrop, with good music offered for Holi song. Chaitrali Dongre has done a good job, designing suitable costumes of all characters. Last but not the least, I. Giridharan and Shanu Singh Rajput have captured good cinematography through their lenses. To sum up, ‘Bhalya’ batted on a sticky wicket.
