‘Rakhandaar’ says, “Yalkot Yalkot Jai Malhar….”
Rating: ★★
Studio / Presenter: Surya Film Creation Producer: Dr. Mrunalinni Patil Director: Dr. Mrunalinni Patil DOP: Jehangir Chowdhury Music: Kanak Raj, Sameer Phaterpekar Cast: Ajinkya Deo, Jitendra Joshi, Anuja Sathe, Satish Pulekar, Ravindra Mahajani, Hansraj Jagtap, Anup Choudhary Genre: Drama Movie Review by: Keerti Kadam |
Surya Film Creation’s new Marathi movie ‘Rakhandaar’, which was in news recently, is releasing on 26th Sept ’14 all over Maharashtra. In this world, some feel that God is to be felt within, while the atheists question about existence of God. Producer, Director Dr. Mrunalinni Patil, has toyed with this idea, in her latest film ‘Raakhandaar’.
A simpleton, Sadanand Lokre (Jitendra Joshi), is an innocent person, who believes in helping his neighbours without any expectations. But, in the process, loses his job and starts working in his late father’s shop as a cobbler, with the only thought in his mind, ‘work is worship’. Khushaba (Ajinkya Deo), appears in the scene, as a villager with his special attire, and meets Sadanand, who realizes and believes that Khushaba is godly personality.
In comes, Australia returned Madhavi (Anuja Sathe), who falls in love with the innocence of Sadanand and they get married, defying Madhavi’s father’s wish of she getting married to the Manager in his office. Later, she gives birth to a son. Just before that Sadanand prays to God, for a son. But, unaware of her husband’s wish, Madhavi promises a return gift to God, that she shall return the same back to him.
There’s a villain in the form of Manager, (Anup Choudhary), who is bent upon marrying Madhavi, who tries, in vain, to spoil her marital bliss; with his childish acts. Khashaba – the Raakhandaar, of whom Sadanand & Madhavi’s son Chhota- Malhar (Master Shreeveer Kadam), also gets extremely fond of; affectionately calls him Devappa, who is always there to rescue our Sadanand whenever in trouble.
The story by Anand More, is a bit lengthy and screenplay also bit patchy. Some scenes erupt abruptly, without any connection to previous scene. Editing should have been handled a bit professionally. Jitendra Joshi does justice to Sadanand, with his innocent face and his couple of one-liners do collect laughter. Anuja Sathe has done very well, as bubbly as well as serious Madhavi and has good screen presence. Ajinkya Deo who plays Raakhandaar, looks handsome in this character and has done justice to his role. Music (Kanak Raj, Sameer Phaterpekar) is saving grace of the movie and filming of songs is very good. Background score of Sameer Phaterpekar, is apt.
Cinematographer Jehangir Choudhary is successful in capturing the required mood of the film. Director, Dr Mrunalinni Patil has tried to camouflage fiction with drama, with some philosophy thrown in. There’s always a next time. Jai Maharashtra. Jai Malhar…..Yalkot Yalkot Jai Malhar.
Fight of a common man against Violent ‘Yeda’
Rating: ★★★
Banner: Maitra Entertainment Producer: Satish More, Sneha Tambe, Girish Salvi, Laxman Salunkhe, Aditya Sharma Director: Kishor Pandurang Belekar Story – Screenplay: Kishor Pandurang Belekar Dialogues: Girish Salwi Cinematography: Raees Ansari Cast: Ashutosh Rana, Reema Lagoo, Kishori Shahane, Satish Pulekar, Aniket Vishwasrao Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
Director kishore Pandurang Belekar known for his debut Marathi horror film ‘Sa Sasucha’ and Asutosh Rana better known for his portrayal of dangerous characters in films like ‘Dushman’ and ‘Sanghrash’ have come together to offer new Marathi film ‘Yeda’, which is also debut film of Ashutosh Rana in Marathi. Therefore, this film had a special significance, knowing the capacity of these two people in their respective departments i.e. direction and acting. Moreover, the film having received ‘A’ certification of Censors, it was certainly expected to be horror filled film.
Set on the backdrop of a small town off Mumbai, the story of the film revolves around a psychic character of Appa Kulkarni ( Ashutosh Rana) who tortures his wife Savitri ( Kishori Shahane Vij) and wants his only young son Unmesh ( Aniket Vishwasrao), who is a Site Engineer, to marry a girl from wealthy family, so that he could recover all the expenses, he spent on his education. But, Unmesh who is in love with Pradnya( Pradnya Shastri) the only daughter of a postmaster from local Post office Mr. Vasant Narvekar( Satish Pulekar).
Knowing the dangerous nature of her husband, Savitri encourages her son to flee with Pradnya, suggesting him to take up another job at a new place. Pradnya gives a shock to her parents, as she flees with Unmesh, without taking them into confidence. Her mother Sadhana ( Reema Lagoo) feels more hurt. But, the psychic father of Unmesh doesn’t take this shock lightly. When Unmesh returns with his wife to seek the blessings of his kind hearted mother; Appa is almost on the verge of killing his own wife; who suggests her son to run away . Both manage to escape, as Appa follows them.
Appa is now after the blood of his own son and his daughter in law who is now pregnant. Violent Appa succeeds in his series of killings, targeting whoever comes in the way. Helpless Pradnya returns to her parents in that condition and finally delivers a baby boy; but breathes her last during delivery. The child is now in the custody of Vasant and Sadhana Narvekar; who are threatened by Appa to hand over the child. The entire post interval session is filled with mystery, as to what would be the next step of Appa and how Vasant Narvekar would face him. After face to face battle, Vasant escapes from the clutches of violent Appa in the climax, due to intervention of Police brought by his wife.
While he is overpowered by Police team, he warns Vasant that he would return soon to take back the child. And courageous Vasant dares to answer him back, stating that between him and his grandson, he would stand like a wall, to accept his challenge. In the climax scene, Vasant could have finished Appa in self defence; but it seems that the director had a sequel of this film in mind. The film which had held its grip over the screenplay for 130 minutes , therefore failed to satisfy the audience in the climax with an expected revenge, which was perhaps differed till part 2 of ‘Yeda’, as indicated through the concluding dialogue.
Technically, ‘Yeda’ is a well presented film by director Kishore Belekar , with good effective sound recording by Sanil P.K. and good support of location sound coming from Anil Nikam. Photography by Raees Ansari is very apt to the screenplay of this film. In the lead role Ashutosh Rana has really worked hard to present his dangerous character. He has received good support from versatile senior artistes like Satish Pulekatr, kishori Shahane and Reema Lagoo, who have performed equally well. In fact, it is a common man’s (Vasant Narvekar’s) courageous fight against violent ‘Yeda’ (Appa).
The young performers Aniket and Pradnya do not find much scope in this film; but, they have played their roles satisfactorily. Barring the violence part and not so convincing climax, ‘Yeda’ is otherwise a good creation.
‘Shree Partner’ retains Va Pu’s original flavor
Rating: na
Banner: Parv Creation, Samruddhi Creation Producer: Vimal Lohane, Sameer Ramesh Surve Director: Sameer Ramesh Surve Based on Novel: ‘Partner’ Music: Nilesh Moharir Cast: Satish Pulekar, Padmanabh Bind, Shweta Pagar, Lalan Sarang Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
Vasant Purushottam Kale, popularly known as Va Pu, was a renowned Marathi novelist.
He wrote about 60 books but his most popular novel was ‘Partner’. Va Pu himself was so impressed by the character of Partner from his book that he himself played the title role in a Marathi play, which was staged sometime during early 80s. Being an architect by profession, the writer had rightly chosen ‘Accommodation problem in Mumbai’ as the backdrop of this love story of a young couple.
Va Pu’s ‘Partner’ was attempted in the form of a TV serial in the past. And now, Sameer Ramesh Surve makes his debut as a director through a feature film ‘Shree Partner’ based on this novel. Sameer, a great admirer of Va Pu’s literature, was very keen on making a film on ‘Partner’. Finally when he acquired the official rights, his dream came true.
Through this film, the director had the liberties of glorifying the characters; but he preferred to stick to originality in the script and only added few meaningful melodious songs to support the expressions of the three main characters in this film; i.e. the central character of Partner( Satish Pulekar), Shree ( Padmanabh Bind) and Kiran ( Shweta Pagar). All the songs are played in the background, to create their desired impact. Some intimate love scenes have also been shot with decency.
Very effectively, these three characters have been presented in the film’s screenplay so that the audience get the feeling of reading the original novel. Shree’s first meeting with Kiran, his first interaction with his so called ‘Partner’, who later offers him accommodation in the corridor of his house and later turns his Guru; his exploitation by his selfish mother, brother and sister in law, everything has been shown realistically. The director has cleverly used the term ‘third person’ making the life of Shree miserable.
The writer’s philosophy on alphabets W & M and using the same to show how a Wife becomes wiser after becoming Mother herself, have been picturised well. Though script is the heart of the film, it is the mesmerizing music of Nilesh Moharir , sensible lyrics of Ashwini Shende and melodious voices of Swapnil Bandodkar, Bela Shende and Madhuhree make this film more appealing. Deepali Vichare’s creative choreography during one of the songs and Sandeep Dhumal’s fabulous cinematography also invites attention.
In the central role of Partner, Satish Pulekar has given full justice to his fun loving but helpful character. Talented stage actor Padmanabh Bind plays the role of Shree with responsibility. Shweta Pagar, who makes her acting debut through this film, in an important role of Kiran, has proved that she is an actress to reckon. Perhaps, her training at Anupam kher’s acting school, has boosted her confidence . Lalan Sarang in the role of Shree’s mother doesn’t have much to offer, except for one scene, where she finds some scope. Others in the supporting cast have done a good job. ‘Shree Partner’ is certainly a well presented film, for retaining the original flavour of the celebrated writer.
