“I am an actor by practice,”- Sachin Khedekar

When you talk to him, you find him at ease and he also makes you feel comfortable with his modest behaviour. But, when he takes his entry whether on the film sets or in reality at any function, he invites the attention of one and all with his graceful personality. This well built Taurean from Marathi and Hindi film industry certainly makes his presence felt, whenever he is around. Watching him on the screen speaking any language, whether it is English, Hindi or Marathi and performing any character, whether it is North Indian, South Indian, Marathi or Bengalee, Sachin Khedekar- the actor, has always given his best.

The length of the role does not make any difference to an actor that is within him. Whoever is on the other side in front of the camera, has made a very little difference to him, once the director calls it a ‘take’. But, when you ask him about his preparedness before well known artistes like Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha or Rakhee, (with whom he has given some of his best scenes) he politely admits his nervousness before the scene. “Whenever, I faced such top actors, certainly there was nervousness before the ‘take’, but once the director called it a ‘take’ I got totally involved into my character and tried to give my best,” he says.

“I have been lucky to perform in the company of some of the great artistes, whom I admired, when I had not even entered this field. Take for example -Padmini Kolhapure, who was my
favourite actress during her rising career in Hindi. I had never even imagined that one day I would be playing lead role opposite her.

But, that opportunity came through ‘Chimni Pakhara’ – a Marathi film through which she made her comeback into acting,” he adds. But, what is the secret behind his spontaneity? When you ask him, he is frank enough to tell the truth. “Actually, I am an actor by practice. Every role offered to me, whether small or big; is a challenge to me. I practice that scene, imagining as if it was a real life situation in my life. I accept it as a part of my living. Rest I leave it to the director, as he is the person, who extracts the best out of me. To be very honest, I am a director’s actor,” he admits with a smile on his face.

Talking about his best performances, again he gives credit to his directors, whether it was Mahesh Manjrekar, Shyam Benegal or others. “Mahesh has been a friend for a long time now. He knows, where to use me and how to extract the best out of me. I just take his instructions and do exactly what he suggests. Likewise, every new role played, is an experience for me to improvise further, after viewing it. Some people may say that I am playing more as a common man, but there are different shades into it,” he puts it courteously.

Sachin does not believe in distinguishing between a film and TV serial, provided the role is good. In Hindi, ‘Imtihaan’ was his first TV serial and we have seen him giving his best through that serial followed by ‘Sailaab’. His love for theatre also hasn’t diminished and when he witnesses some of the ongoing Marathi plays like ‘Hamidabaichi Kothi’ and ‘Kathaa’ drawing a full house. He feels very happy about it.

Sachin is now making his comeback as a hero into Marathi films, after a gap of two years, though we have seen him in recent times as a guest artiste in two of Mahesh Manjrekar’s films, namely : ‘Shikshanachya Aaicha Gho’ and ‘Lalbaug Parel’. We have also seen his ability to give his finest even through those smallest scenes. Hence, his forthcoming Marathi film ‘Tayanche Bait’ has obviously raised lot of expectations, as he is once again playing the lead role of a father of a 10 year old child. This film is an emotion filled tale with a touch of humour. When the child gets attracted towards the five star lifestyle of the city of Mumbai, the father throws a challenge to him to be a topper in the class and in return promises him a day’s stay in a five star hotel.

Today, ‘Taryanche Bait’ is not only the talk all over Maharashtra because it is Ektaa Kapoor’s first Marathi film as a producer under her new banner ‘Alt Entertainment’, but also because it is the film of Sachin Khedekar. A promising director Kiran Yadnopavit, who had earlier written three best scripts of Marathi cinema and who had earlier directed some Marathi plays, will be directing this film. Sachin has certainly given justice to that role, as witnessed in the clippings of the film. Now, all eyes on the release date of this film.

Political Censorship blocking the progress of Marathi films

Last week it was ‘Zenda’ the marathi film, which was stalled for projecting a character resembling a Maharashtra Minister. Now, another marathi film ‘Shikshanachya Aaicha Gho’ faces a threat from a Political outfit, for using such a title to the film. It is rather surprising that Political censorship is coming in the way of a film, which has already received censor’s certification and is almost due for release. It looks like that blocking the release of a film and issuing threats has become a new political stunt.

“If the same political outfit is so much against the title of this film, why they were sitting quiet for so long ?” remarked the film maker Mahesh Manjrekar in a TV interview yesterday. And, the stand of the director not to bow down to the pressure seems to be justified. He has even approached the chief minister of Mahrashtra, who has assured him all the help. “If any film which has been passed by the censors, need any kind of police protection at the cinema halls during the release, in anticipation of any threats, the same will be provided,” assured the CM while addressing the media.

Looking at the objection raised towards the film’s title, the director of the film has already made it clear that it was with an intention to express displeasure over the existing educational system which is putting psychological pressure on students from school and parents. He has used the same in the context of referring today’s taxing educational system and not with the intention of abusing Mother. But, as we see it happening these days, the progress of Marathi film and the creativity of the film maker is blocked by our own Marathi people. Instead of watching the film first, there has been unnecessary hue and cry before the release of the film.

Where were these objections when late Dada Kondke made films with double meaning dialogues? Why the same outfit did not object to the dialogues and abuses in the same Konkani language used in popular Marathi play ‘Vastraharan’ which has almost crossed 5000 shows? In fact, this music based drama contains more bad words and abuses, worst than the title of this film and is watched by children along with their parents.

Moreover, this popular play was also watched by all political leaders in Maharashtra during its 5000th show held in Shanmukhanand Hall recently. If the abuses and bad words in the same Konkani language are accepted by our leaders and large number of drama enthusiasts in Maharashtra, why object to these Konkani words ‘Aaicha Gho’?

After the sad demise of Laxmikant Berde, Marathi film industry was in search of an actor with a perfect timing of comedy. At that time Bharat Jadhav was the most popular stage actor, with his play ‘Sahi Re Sahi’ creating new houseful records. Bharat was obviously the choice of Marathi film makers for their action- comedy films and most of the top film makers including Mahesh Kothare opted for him. A simple and down to earth person, Bharat was on a signing spree and managed to play lead roles in many successful films.

After release of ‘Shwaas’ the trend of Marathi films changed. But, there was always place for an actor like Bharat, who went on to perform even serious types of characters with authority. Watching him perform as an angry young man fighting against the existing education system in Mahesh Manjrekar’s film ‘Shikshanachya Aaicha Gho’, clearly indicated that Bharat was prepared to take on challenges through serious types of roles.

This film is now due for release, after being appreciated in various international film festivals, wherever it was shown. Bharat plays the role of a poor farmer in the cotton field from a small village in Maharashtra. For an actor like Bharat, who is so much dedicated to his profession; this is just a beginning.

Off the field, Bharat is a real gem of a person, always ready to cooperate with all those who approach him with offers. Even after entering films, Bharat hasn’t stopped performing on stage and TV serials. ‘The show must go on'; no matter whether it is small screen, big screen or stage, seems to be his attitude.
One should closely watch his sense of humour, whenever he attends private functions. The manner in which he communicates with the audience with spontaneity, speaks about his gifted nature to interact with people so closely at any given time.

Recently, he walked in as a last minute special guest for the music CD release of Marathi Rock star Mangesh Borgaonkar’s new album. When Bharat was invited on stage, there was a big demand coming from audience to dance on the music. When Bharat saw that the audience was not keeping quiet, he told them to remain silent at once; or else, he would start singing in his own voice and that they would have to tolerate him. His timely joke did work well and Bharat after speaking a few words released the CD. Indeed, it is very difficult to find a simple and wonderful person in the field of entertainment.
