In everyone’s life there’s a woman, in the form of a mother, sister, friend, wife. But, sadly enough even in 21st century she becomes a victim of abuse, not only in India but worldwide. Every woman has been gifted by god with a special sense, to distinguish the intention of look and touch of the opposite sex, e.g. touch of love, blessing, affection, and also lust. ‘Candle March’, presented by Chanakya Creations, in association with K4 Enterprises and produced by Anjali & Nilesh Gawde, has handled the subject of sexual exploitation, rape in an effective way.
Sachin Darekar’s story is about the incidents of rapes happening around us. He has used real life incidents like Jalgaon Sex scandal, Delhi gangrape, Shakti mills rape case, in the story to create an impact. Shabana (Smita Tambe) is a woman leading her life in a shanty, with her children and an irritable husband (Nilesh Diwekar), whose passion is booze and beating his wife at the slightest provocation. Vidhya (Manasi Naik) is a journalist working for a TV channel, who faces sexual exploitation at every step in her career from her immediate boss. Anurata (Tejaswini Pandit), a professor of Marathi literature in a college, who accidentally happens to save a gang raped victim. She is a scarred victim in Jalgaon sex scandal. Sakhi (Sayali Sahasrabuddhe) a young collegian, who is a rape victim of an acid attack. The story unfolds through these four protagonists, fighting their individual battles of sexual abuse and all four stories get intermingled in an effective way, for a collective fight against sexual harassment and unrest.
Director, Sachin Deo raises hopes right from the first frame of the movie (a dark black screen and baritone voice of Nana Patekar) and manages to hold on to keep the viewers interested in his sincere storytelling. Though the subject is ‘dark’, serious, he, without indulging in titillation, presents the subject without any gimmicks. Very beautifully he has managed to blend the scenes by ending of one scene turning beginning of the next, with splice. In this woman dominated film of four female performers, the Screenplay is so compact that eaTejaswini Pandit, Actressch scene says something and moves on without lingering even for seconds. Dialogues, which are immensely realistic, is the heart of this movie, speaking volumes in a few words. Music (Amitraaj) and Lyrics (Mandar Cholkar) are the soul of this movie and songs do almost 15-20 scenes worth talking in a hard hitting way, except for a romantic number. Background music is an icing on cake, as it lifts the film to another level. Fabulous use of ‘Aalaaps’ depicting pain, passion, plight, torment, sorrow & a variety of emotions, add value to the scenes.
Manava Naik does justice to her role. Sayali Sahasrabuddhe gets better in second half. Smita Tambe impresses with her instinctive expressive face. Superb underplay and tremendous mental strength on a frail frame characterisation is a big plus from Tejaswini Pandit. In a crowded female cast two actors, who leave their mark impressively, are Nilesh Diwekar and Rajendra Shisatkar (as Inspector). Editing, make-up, costume departments too make their presence felt. And Nana Patekar’s opening lines are a treat to experience.

Smita Tambe performs item song in ‘Deool’
Talented actress Smita Tambe, who proved her dancing skills besides acting in recently concluded dance reality show ‘Ekapeksha Ek- Apsara Aali’ will now be seen in an item number in forthcoming Marathi film ‘Deool’.
The film has already invited attention with the coming together of three big artistes – Nana Patekar, Naseeruddin Shan and Dilip Prabavalkar for the first time in Marathi cinema. Written by Girish Kulkarni and directed by Umesh Kulkarni, the film is progressing fast towards completion.
I have always given my best with total commitment – Smita Tambe
Artistes with great ability develop and prove themselves good with every new assignment. Smita Tambe is one such hard working and talented artiste, who took up the challenge with every role she was offered. She began with strong character roles in a TV serial and a film and today she has two more films awaiting for release; namely Amol Palekar’s ‘Dhoosar’ and Rajiv Patil’s ‘Paangira’. MMW had a chit chat with Smita Tambe, who spoke about her experiences in this industry.
Q: How comfortable are you feeling today, after choosing acting as your career ?
A: In the beginning, when you don’t find much of work, you always feel that you area struggler. But, when you have work in hand, you dedicate yourself completely to that work. In due course of time you become popular and receive recognition. It is at this stage you consider yourself settled. Today, I have that feeling.
Q: You have been in this industry for the past 3-4 years. How was your journey from beginning till this stage ?
A: I am originally from Satara but lived in Pune. After coming to Mumbai, every new assignment brought extra enthusiasm in me. My parents didn’t know much about this industry and are still unaware about it. But, they never opposed me. In fact, they always supported me. Till now, the journey has been smooth and good. As far as my performance is concerned, whether it was playing Kitty in ‘Anubandh’ or performing in ‘Jogwa’. I have always given my best with total commitment. Not many are aware that I was also a choreographer for the film ‘Jogwa’.
Q: Soon you will be seen in Amol Palekar’s film ‘Dhoosar’. How was your selection made in this film ?
A: When I went for audition of this film, my selection was made for another role. But, now I have been offered an important role in the film. That made me more happy.
Q: What is this film all about and what kind of role you are playing ?
A: The film’s subject is based on an ailment. It is an emotional story. The character of a girl I am playing is meeting her mother after almost 2 and 1/2 years. But, things have changed during this period. The film has been shot on this backdrop showing that change. Along with me there are other well known artistes like Reemaji, Upendra Limaye, Jyoti Subhash & Amruta khanvilkar.
Q: How was your experience working with Mr. Palekar ?
A: He being a renowned actor and director, I was certainly excited to work with him. Mr. Palekar is known for dealing with diverse subjects and has his own style of working which is different. While on the sets, I knew my responsibilities well. With whatever expectations he had made my selection, I felt that I should give my 100% and did so. Now, it is for the audience to judge my performance.
Madhav Abhyankar serves ‘The Cup’ with emotions
Using his vast experience on stage and screen, actor Madhav Abhyankar (‘Second Inning’ fame) has turned a director now. Madhav has made his short film ‘The Cup’ on a very different subject, capturing the emotions of a middle aged couple. Starring Vinay Kulkarni and Smita Tambe, this little more than 9 minutes short film has been scripted by Vyankatesh Madgulkar. It is a simple but effective happening in the life of a couple, which goes on to say a lot about emotional attachment.
Surely, he will send his film for participation in film festivals, but he has made it available on youtube.com for public viewing
