‘Mangalashtaka’ deserves ‘Once More’

Studio: Shree Aadya Films Producer: Renu Desai Writer, Director: Sameer Joshi Music Director:Nilesh Moharir Cinematographer: Sanjay Jadhav Cast: Swapnil Joshi, Mukta Barve, Kadambari Kadam, Vijay Patwardhan, Sai Tamhankar Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
After their first Marathi film ‘Mumbai Pune Mumbai’, the pair of Swapnil Joshi and Mukta Barve had become so popular that their subsequent TV serial ‘Eka Lagnachi Doosari Goshta’ became a super hit on small screen. Still, popularly known as Ghana and Radha with their character names in the serial; they have once again come together in the latest released film ‘Mangalashtaka Once More’ directed by Sameer Joshi.
The film talks about the lifestyle of a young married couple Satyajit Phatak ( Swapnil Joshi) and Aarti ( Mukta Barve). While Satyajit Manages the Sales Department of a popular FM Radio Company, Aarati being an MBA prefers to be a housewife and take extra care of her husband. Already worried about the work pressure, Satyajit vents out his frustration on his over caring wife Aarti, who is always worried about his health. Suddenly reacting one day, Satyajit demands for his space and both of them get separated from each other; much against Aarti’s wish.
Being helpless, Aarti takes shelter at her younger sister- Reva’s ( Kadambari kadam) place, only to be reminded by her to be an independent woman. But, Aarti being a typical Bharatiya Naari, is not able to forget Satyajit, though she takes up a job. She tries to contact him and wants his friend Nikhil( Hemant Dhome) to help them bring them together. But, that doesn’t work, as Satyajit is shown more busy with his office work, only to create misunderstandings about his close relationship with his senior office colleague Shalini ( Sai Tamhankar) , who wants him to focus his attention on achieving business target. All is well at the end, to make everyone happy.
‘Mangalashtaka Once More’ offers quality entertainment through a subject, which is so relevant to today’s busy lifestyle. It describes the frustration of youngsters, while handling the work pressure in office and goes on to show how it affects their personal life. The film also shows how a happy marriage could turn into a disturbed married life for want of space, with unfolding of events, causing disturbance. Through the character of Reva, the film shows the other way of handling such situations and through the character of Shalini, it is shown how a woman gives importance to her career, sacrificing her personal life.
Best part of the film is its story written by the director himself, who knew his job very well, while directing all those important scenes. Be it the parting time between the couple, their reunion during the meeting in a coffee shop, Aaart’s communication with Reva while defending her husband and finally coming together of the couple in climax scene , after removing all the misunderstandings, between them.
Cinematographer Sanjay Jadhav has done a very good job once again after ‘Duniyadari’ with his wonderful camera work. Director Sameer Joshi makes a fine debut with his notable work. He seems to have received good support from producer Renu Desai, who has paid more attention on making this film technically perfect with selection of suitable locations, besides using well known playback singers and good music from Nilesh Mohrir.
Looking at the performances, Swapnil Joshi is at his best, displaying sudden change of his behaviour on different occasions with spontaneity. Mukta Barve has also shown her wonderful acting skills while expressing her emotions. Their chemistry has worked very well this time too, clearly indicating that they deserve to be together ‘Once More’, in another film in near future. Kadambari kadam has got a better role , though she plays Aarti’s younger sister. She seemed to be at ease while performing that role. Though the name of Saie Tamhankar appeared as friendly appearance, she has a sizable role and she perfectly fits into that character of career minded Sahlini. However, Hemant Dhome has very limited scope, though he has done his job well. Vijay Patwardhan is a waste in this film. But, others in the supporting cast have done a good job.
The film is very well presented in the first half and continues with the same pace immediately after interval. But, few scenes consume little more time than required. The final scene of their coming together has been wound up little hurriedly in a predictable manner. Barring this, the film is a pleasure to watch. It’s a neat and clean entertaining film for the entire family. The young couples shouldn’t miss it.

‘Govinda’ entertains with a timely message
Rating: ★★★ ½
Studio: Vrindavan Films Entertainment Producer: Vilasrao Waghmode Director: Aatmaram Dharne Music: Rohan Pradhan Cinematography: Nandkumar Patil Cast: Swapnil Joshi, Girija Joshi, Arun Nalawade, Vidhyadhar Joashi, Uday Tikekar, Annapurna Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
Govinda and Ganapati are two such festivals in Maharashtra, which are now days becoming more political than cultural festivals. The shrewd politicians are exploiting the sentiments of enthusiastic youth, luring them with their money power to earn political mileage for themselves. Set on the backdrop of this theme, new Marathi film ‘Govinda’ exposes the motives of one such politician who is more keen on making his own progress in political circle at the cost of the lives of thousands of Govindas, who take risks to rise to maximum heights by forming human pyramids , to win the attractive cash prizes.
Rajan Mayekar ( Swapnil Joshi) is one such dynamic youngster, who is the son of a honest but suspended Police officer( Uday Tikekar); who has been fixed by the builder turned politician Hitesh Gosavi ( Vidyadhar Joshi) , popularly known as Mama. Rajan and his group of friends who are taking lead during Govinda and Ganapati festival in their locality; are lured by the cash prize of Rs. 1 Crore offered by Mama to break the dahi handi.
Rajan has a girlfriend Shravani ( Girija Joshi) living in the neighbourhood; but her father (Arun Nalavade) and Rajan’s father are enemies, always fighting over small issues. Instead of preparing for his MPSC exams, as desired by his father and girl friend; Rajan is more keen on event management. He does not believe in following the path of his father, who has suffered because of his honesty. So, to become richer through fast track, he tries to impress Mama, who is also keen on redeveloping his colony.
However, the shrewd politician, has other plans. When Rajan comes to know the truth about Mama using him for his personal gain and having falsely implicated his father; he dares to challenge him. But, Mama plays all his tricks, only to silence his voice. Finally, after recovering from his leg injury, suffered while breaking Mama’s Hundi, Rajan prepares hard for his examination and becomes strong enough to teach a lesson to the Politician.
The film deals with a subject, which is so relevant to make the youngsters understand how these politicians are using them for their personal gain, at the cost of their lives. The film clearly hints at the non availability of safety requirements at the site of such prize Money Govinda competitions. It also clearly shows how the Politicians manage media support for their publicity. In one of the scenes, it is clearly shown as to how big water cannons are used to break the pyramids of the team, which is about to break the Hundi. And last but not the least; where from the money comes during Govinda sponsorship ?
‘Govinda’ certainly delivers a timely message at the most appropriate time when the festival season is just on the way; but, some of the scenes have been wrapped up in the screenplay, e.g. like the sudden cancellation of Shravani’s marriage to a boy from Kuwait, followed by quick understanding between Rajan’s and Shravani’s parents. Even the climax scene showing Rajan achieving a powerful position in a short period and getting Mama arrested with his property raided, looks more like a typical formula film style. But, looking at the sincere effort put in by the film maker, in doing a good study about the commercialisation of this popular festival, the film has turned out to be a fairly good presentation .
Swapnil Joshi is now a popular hero of Marathi films. Through his performance in ‘Govinda’ , he has proved that he can pull the success of a film at his own strength. He is certainly a very good actor, who performs every character he plays through his heart and playing this role of Rajan Mayekar with full commitment, is the best example. Swapnil’s fans shouldn’t miss this film. Girija Joshi looks impressive as his co star and has given good support. Considering her character from a typical Middle class family, the director has not glamorized her character.
For both Swapnil and Girija, the director has used light make up, to make them look more natural. Arun Nalawade and Uday Tikekar offer a good support; but Vidyadhar Joshi impresses more, as the perfect villain in Marathi film industry. All the youngsters in the group of Swapnil, have performed very well. Some of them are new faces. Dialogues of the film by Arwind Jagtap are well written. Music by Rohan Pradhan is fine; but, he has impressed more with his background music. Naddkumar Patil’s cinematography has captured the Dahi handi and action scenes and song sequences very well. In short, ‘Govinda’ entertains with a timely message.
Anything for Love and friendship – ‘Duniyadari’ shows the way
Rating: ★★★ ½
Studio: Video Palace, Dreaming Twenty Four Seven. Producers: Dreaming Twenty Four Seven. Director: Sanjay Jadhav Music: Sameer Saptiskar, Pankaj, Amit Raj Cinematography: Umesh Jadhav Cast: Swapnil Joshi, Ankush Chaudhary, Urmila Kanetkar, Sai Tamhankar, Sandeep Kulkarni, Varsha Usgaonkar, Jitendra Joshi, Sushant Shelar, Uday Tikekar, Uday Sabnis Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
The most valuable gift you can possess is a honest friend. Many a times, some people come into our lives and quickly go; but, some stay for a while and leave footprints on our hearts. Ace Cinematographer turned director Sanjay Jadhav’s latest film ‘Duniyadari’ presents a plot based on such theme, which is inspired from best seller ‘Duniyadari’ by eminent writer Late Shri Suhas Shirwalkar Though primarily set on the backdrop of 1970’s, the happenings in this romantic emotion filled love story, still relates to the youth of today, as screenplay writer Chinmay Mandlekar has made few changes to suit the cinematic form.
So, we find Shreyas Talwalkar (Swapnil Joshi) a young boy in his 20s from Mumbai, caught up in a bad father and mother (Uday Tikekar- Varsha Usgaonkar) relationship. After scoring poor passing marks in graduation, he is sent by his mother to Pune’s S. P. College for his post graduation. He finds his accommodation in college hostel and encounters notorious Digya alias DSP (Ankush Choudhary) and his Katta Gang comprising of Ashkya, Nitys, Sorry, Sunil and Umya, a bunch of hooligans. Digya is in relationship with his long time neighbourhood friend Surekha (Richa Pariyali), who is also part of the gang.
The katta gang members add vibrant colours to the otherwise disturbed life of Shreyas ,who is from a rich family , but deprived of love and friendship. The gang come across a brother and sister duo of Pritam and Shirin (Sushant Shelar and Sai Tamhankar), who are children of a renowned MLA. Pritam who is also student of Post graduate studies, becomes friendly with Shreyas and his other friends, while Shirin who is a medical student, is a frequent visitor to their college. It is actually love at first sight for Shireen, when she first meets Shreyas. The friendship grows. But, in between Digya and his friends suggest Shreyas to become friendly with Police Inspector’s daughter Meenakshi alias Meenu ( Urmila kanitkar Kothare) taking it as a challenge to teach a lesson to her adamant father.
The assembly of these characters is enough for the film to progress with its screenplay with sequence of scenes between Meenu and Shreyas, Shireen and Shreyas, Digya and Sainath alias Sai( Jitendra Joshi) – from a rival gang and local politician’s son. Jealous about the growing friendship between Digya and Shreyas, Akshya breaks away from the group and joins Sai’s group. We also find Sai playing his clever game, proposing Shirin through his political connections. Watching Shreyas coming closer to Meenu, Shirin accepts Sai’s proposal. But, she still tries to be a good friend of Shreyas. Also, with the help of her brother, she brings Meenu closer to Shreyas. Now, in a dilemma, Shreyas declares his love for Meenu , in presence of Shireen; but is not happy. Even Digya finds his beloved getting married to a stranger, at the behest of her parents, who don’t approve Digya.
Many events unfold thereafter, through frequent flashbacks; as the entire story is shown in a series of flashbacks, which is a new style adopted by the director. You also find its link to the story of Shreyas’ mother, who reveals the truth to Shreyas , after his father’s untimely death. It is after that you find a sudden change in attitude of Shreyas, who moves ahead with his changed plan, to take you through a filmy climax .
Director Sanjay Jadhav seems to have paid more attention on presentation of every character from his film, with lot of perfection on their costumes and styles suited to the period of 70s. Watch the bell bottoms of boys, long side locks of Ajinkya, long hair style of Jitendra and costumes of all characters. They are all perfectly styled. What looks unrealistic is the climax, which goes on the lines of Bollywood films of 70s and 80s. Smoking cigarettes by the characters including Shireen-a medical student, has been shown more than required. Her regular visits to S. P. College and that too once in their library looks unnatural. Not much attention has been paid on the make up of the artistes in the older look, except for their grey hair. Even the names of the katta members engraved on the katta, are noticed during the reunion after almost 40-50 years, which is something strange.
But, the fine performances by all the artistes in the film make you overlook these minor errors. ‘Duniyadari’ is a film that mainly revolves around two main characters, Shreyas and Shireen, which is in narrative form from Shireen’s point of view. In the character of Shireen, Sai Tamhankar has found an important role to display her real acting skills. Till now, she was being used more as a glamour girl. Swapnil, was expected to deliver his best and he has played his role with total commitment to his character. His total involvement in the character, can be clearly noticed in this film.
In the role of Digya, Ankush Chaudhary is a perfect choice. He impresses with his tall angry young man looks and actions. Jitendra Joshi presents a rowdy young villain in style, paying more attention on his attire and dialogue delivery. Though Urmila kanitkar kothare finds a limited role, she plays an important character in the film, displaying her emotions clearly. Even Richa Pariyali in her limited role, finds an opportunity in one particular scene, to display her emotions. Sushant Shelar’s Pritam is convincing and so is Ajainkya Joshi’s Ashkya.
In this film, Sandeep Kulkarni surprises with his special appearance. He hardly has 2- 3 scenes; but he creates an impact through them. In the supporting cast, Varsha Usgaonkar, Uday Tikekar and others offer good backing. Music by Sameer Satoskar, Pankaj and Amit Raj is good for a change. Director Sanjay Jadhav has paid complete attention on direction, as he has handed over the responsibility of cinematography to Prasad Bhende in this film, who has done a good job. No wonder, there is sincere effort put in by entire team in presenting this strong script backed film.
‘Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai’ in 106 minutes

Producer: Mirah Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. Presentor: Twinkle Group Exe. Producer: Sanjay Dawra Director: Satish Rajwade Story, Screenplay: Parag Kulkarni, Satish Rajwade Camera: Suhas Gujrathi Editing: Rajesh Rao Cast: Swapnil Joshi, Mukta Barve Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
A young modern girl dressed in Long Red skirt and white top (Let us call her Ms. Mumbai) moves all alone from Mumbai to Pune just to select her would be, on the request of her Mother. After passing from one junction to other searching for the address, she finally lands at the destination point, where some boys are playing gully cricket. She selects none other than the batsman (Let us call him Mr. Pune) to know exact location of the house; and as a result of which he is clean bowled. The young man (Dressed in Bermuda shorts, an overcoat and sports shoes) however directs her to the location but to her surprise, the door is locked. Ms. Mumbai is unable to contact the concerned person, as her cell phone battery is down. So, she proceeds to a grocery shop, only to call her friend and inform about the non availability of the person. Here again, Ms. Mumbai and Mr. Pune meet for the second time.
Their general argument to show each other’s attachment for their native, brings them together, when Mr. Pune offers courtesy to Ms. Mumbai by taking her for a ride during the day time, as the girl has a return ticket for an evening train and wants to pass her time. Together, they visit places like Saras Baug, Dagduseth Ganapati temple, crowded Tulshi baug and Sinhagad. They share their experiences about their past love affairs, but do not reveal each others name. Finally, Mr. Pune drops Ms. Mumbai at Pune station and both say good bye to each other. While she waits for her train, she receives a call on her cell phone, (which suddenly starts functioning) from the boy from Pune, whom she had actually come to see. But, when she comes out to meet him at the gate, as agreed, she finds Mr. Pune, still struggling to kick his scooter. Needless to say that Mr. Pune is none other than her would be. In the climax shot the girl is shown running to catch her train back to Mumbai, giving some indication to the boy about her approval.
Director Satish Rajwade directs this unusual love story in his own style trying to keep the audience engaged with arguments and counter arguments between the two characters. Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai, is more like an audio delight ( through timely dialogues) than visual impact, as you only notice the two characters in the same dress for about 100 minutes, except for the song-cum-dream sequence for 5 minutes, when they are seen in some designer costumes. It is only few outdoor locations of Pune darshan that brings in some change, but otherwise you see two of them just perform and express their emotions, while making their point. There isn’t much scope for music, but other technical areas have been handled well.
Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai(MPM), is thus an experiment to attempt something different. Such experiments are only acceptable in Marathi cinema. Precisely, MPM is a performance driven and communication based film with both Swapnil Joshi and Mukta Barve coming out with realistic performances. Except for few junior artistes, there are no other characters in the film. Targeted mainly at the young audience from Mumbai and Pune, the film does succeed in inviting the attention of elders besides the youngsters. But, this movie is certainly not for school going kids, as they are sure to feel sleepy or become restless during that total 106 minutes journey. For others, it is a light entertainer, for a change.

latest marathi film review: CHECKMATE

Company: Nishad Audio Visuals Producer: Kanchan Satpute & Chandrashekhar Mahamuni Story, Screenplay, Cinematography & Direction: Sanjay Jadhav Dialogues: Vivek Apte Music: Sunil Kaushik Cast: Ankush Chaudhari, Swapnil Joshi, Sanjay Narvekar, Rahul Mehandale, Vinay Apte, Anand Abhyankar and Sonali khare Movie Review by: Saurabh Karnik |
Amazing cinematography. Awesome editing. Stunning special effects. Hey, I am not stating here specialties of Hollywood, nor I am talking about any latest Bollywood movie! These are major characteristics of our own Marathi movie ‘Checkmate’. Thanks to Sanjay Jadhav and his all team, who gifted such a beautiful movie to audiences.
It is a challenge for any writer to describe the story on paper. The story develops in front of audiences through various small pieces, which are the part of a puzzle. When all the pieces fix at appropriate position, puzzle gets solved and audiences understand complete story with a sudden shock. The story moves around three young guys who were cheated through fake financial scheme. Unfortunately all of them lost all their precious money that they had collected by cheated somebody. Now they come together and make a plan to recover their money.
So the story is all about implementation of the plan and troubles that had been faced while implementation. Everyone treat himself, as the master of the game and thus everyone became just a pawn for other character. But actual master of the game comes forward only at the end of the movie. Of course the remaining story has to be seen on screen itself and I promise all the readers that it is just a thrilling experience to watch it on a big screen. Sanjay Jadhav- one of the best cameraman in the industry has taken a huge risk in his directorial debut to come up with such kind of risky story. One small mistake in presentation could have been destroyed the whole film. But he trusted his own abilities and as a result Marathi Film Industry got such a wonderful movie.
Ankush Chaudhari, Swapnil Joshi, Sanjay Narvekar, Rahul Mehandale, Vinay Apte, Anand Abhyankar and Sonali khare are the main star-cast of the movie. None of them our new to us, and everybody has acted impressively. But Swpanil Joshi is the real surprising package for viewers. We have seen him in many hindi and Marathi serials, but none of those gave him a chance to show his real skills. This was his first opportunity had made no mistake. His ‘bolbacchangiri’, facial expressions and even dialog delivery is extremely good. Ankush, Vinay and Sanjay are as good as expected. Sonali doesn’t have much scope in the film.
As I stated earlier, technical side is the real strength of the movie. Sanjay Jadhav himself handled camera, cinematography, and direction and he did every job perfectly. Sunil Kaushik’s background music adds good essence in the story.
Marthi Film Industry had never faced shortage of good stories or actors. It was the technical part, where it was lacking. With this movie we can surely say that the industry has came over this aspect also. We can surely consider it as a new beginning and if others will also follow Sanjay, golden days of Marathi Film Industry are not long away.
Swapnil Joshi – Changing the look of Marathi films
Marathi film industry has found a perfect star in Swapnil Joshi, to change its look. Today, he is the most popular hero in Marathi entertainment industry, being partly responsible for the success of the latest released Super hit Marathi film ‘Duniyadari’. The film was rated among the top 10 Indian films during the last week of July 2013 with 98 % occupancy, much more than films like ‘Mariya( Tamil), Ship of Thesus( English) and ‘Bhag Milkha Bhag’ and ‘D day’s( Hindi); according to Bookmyshow.com.
Swapnil JoshiWith his Chocolate Boy image, Swapnil had a good start for his acting career, during late 80s; when as a 9 year old kid, he played the role of ‘Kush’ in the second part of Ramanand Sagar’s most popular TV serial ‘Ramayan’, i.e.Uttar Ramayan( titled ‘Luv kush) . Few years later, as a teenager he performed as young Krishna, in Ramanand Sagar’s mega TV serial ‘Krishna’. Swapnil did take a break for his studies, to complete his education. He completed his graduation in commerce from Sydenham College ,Mumbai .Later, while performing in Hindi TV serials, he also completed his law graduation.
Some of the Hindi TV soaps he performed in late 90s were ‘Amanat’ ,’Had Kar Di’ and ‘Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand’, a highly popular soap which ran from 2001 to 2005; followed by ‘Hare Kaanch Ki Choodiyaan’ . In the meanwhile, he attained more popularity through TV reality shows; both as a performer and show anchor. In comedy series ‘Papad Pol – Shahabuddin Rathod Ki Rangeen Duniya’ aired only three years ago, on SAB TV, rated him a popular Indian television star.
Simultaneously, his journey into Marathi television and films, had also begun. He acted in one Marathi serial titled ‘Adhuri Ek Kahani’ and also performed in films like ‘Manini’, ‘Checkmate’ and ‘Mumbai Pune Mumbai’. For ‘Checkmate’, he received State award for best actor. Recently, he performed in a popular Marathi serial ‘Eka Lagnachi Dusri Goshta’opposite Mukta Barve. And, their chemistry worked very well on small screen. But, the success of Marathi Film ‘Duniyadari’ will take him long way. By the way, his new Marathi stage play, ‘Get well Soon!’ is also drawing good crowds.
The year 2013 seems to be lucky year for him. When Marathi Movie world called him up, to congratulate him on his recent film’s success, he was very happy. Talking about his future projects, he said that his two more films are due for release soon. My next film ‘Govinda’ is due for release on 16th August and the promotion of the same will begin from 1st August. The next to follow before the end of this year, will be ‘Mangalashtaka Once More’,’ he concluded. But, he seemed to be very happy, with the success of ‘Duniyadari’. Indeed, Swapnil has put in his heart into the role of Shreyas Talwalkar in this film. The film has not only captured the audience from Mumbai, Pune; but, also district places like Ratnagiri & Kolhapur. And, Swapnil is the most popular hero of Marathi films today. Perhaps, it is for the first time, in recent years, a hero from Marathi films has reached popularity heights.
