Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

The ghastly 26/11 episode will complete 3 years on Saturday. To remind the people about the ill effects of this event on the lives of those who fought a gallant battle with dreaded terrorists in Mumbai, a new Marathi film ‘Hello Jai Hind!’ pays sincere tributes to all of them.

Though this film has been shot on the backdrop of this event, it goes on to narrate the tragic story of one such brave Police Constable- Shivaji Pawar, attached to Mumbai Police Special Crime Branch. The film goes on to show how he and his wife Durga had to face the challenges in the society, when they decide to take on life only through the right path.

Directed by Gajendra Ahire, and starring Nitin Chandrakant Desai and Trupti Bhoir in the lead role, the film tries to be realistic in its approach, when it comes to speaking on certain administrative decisions on delay in justice and treating a dreaded terrorist under trial like a special guest in the jail. The film does succeed in highlighting this issue timely, with hard hitting dialogues and realistic scenes to clearly indicate how such dreaded terrorists have been taking advantage of our country’s liberal policies. But, unfortunately the film does not conclude well, so as to inspire the audience. It is almost like showing the helplessness of common man, hoping for justice, no matter how long it takes.

Barring the end result, the film has very effectively placed the facts before the audience about the ongoing situation post 26/11 episode. The recent news appearing in the newspapers about the expenditure running into croes of rupees spent over providing the security to the dreaded terrorist and how the taxpayers in Mumbai are paying for it; reminds one and all about the sincerity of the film maker to place before the audience certain facts, inviting their attention. Music being the heart of Marathi films, this film has very effectively presented few songs to go well with certain situations in the screenplay. The wonderful compositions of Illyaraja, who makes his debut in Marathi through this film, match very well with the script. Lagaan Fame -Ballu Saluja’s editing is very appropriate, to keep the screenplay in motion.

Nitin Desai In Hello Jaihind

‘Hello Jai Hind!’ makes its impact through wonderful performances by all the important characters. Nitin Chandrakant Desai, who makes his debut as an actor through this film, does a commendable job, playing the role of a brave Constable. In every scene he has tried to do something different, either through his body language or with his expressions displaying his agony. Playing his courageous wife Durga, Trupti Bhoir has suggested that she is still in the reckoning as a talented actress. Apart from Nitin Desai, one more artiste in the form of Kedar Shinde, displayed his acting skills through an important role of another committed and honest constable living in the neighbourhood of the lead couple.
Among others in the supporting cast, Vinay Apte, Ravindra Mankani, Yatin Karyekar, Amita Khopkar, Vibhavari Deshpande Bollywood actor Murali Sharma and the girl playing the role of Durga’s sister are impressive in their respective limited but important roles. Thanks to Producer Trupti Bhoir and director Gajendra Ahire for using this resourceful medium of cinema to bring to light this most sensitive subject, which is not only stimulating but intensely related to the society.

Movie Review by: Namita Majgankar

At a time when obesity is on the rise in our country, Trupti Bhoir comes up with a unique theme through her latest film ‘Agadbam’. Aptly titled, the film talks about the strange happenings in the life of an obese girl Najuka weighing 250 kgs with a huge structure. Najuka’s father has fixed her marriage while she was a child to his friend’s son and it’s a commitment given to a priest in the temple of Lord Lingoba.

When the communication is reached between the two parties after so many years reminding each other about the promise, the stage is set to get Najuka married to late Devkule’s son Raiba, who is not allowed to see the bride, as per the tradition. Raiba, who is otherwise desperate to get married, agrees to marry Najuka with this condition. But, when he finds Najuka in her real shape, he starts hating her. Though Najuka wins the heart of her Mother-in-law and Grand Mother-in-law; with her good nature; she fails to win over her husband.
The film’s screenplay makes you a part of their family friends developing sympathy towards Najuka. When Najuka leaves her husband’s place; Raiba realizes his mistake as he is made to understand by people around him, explaining the meaning of a good ideal wife. Finally everything ends well with a happy note.

‘Agadbam’ is the kind of film that speaks about the change that Marathi film industry has brought in technical areas. Watch the Prosthetic make-up of Trupti Bhoir in that role of Najuka and you will be stunned. The usage of VFX and DI makes the film perfect in presentation. Cinematographer and director Satish Motling has used his expertise to present the film, keeping in mind the plus points of Najuka’s character. Makarand Anaspure, Trupti Bhoir, Usha Nadkarni
Trupti has dared to present herself in that get-up throughout the film, except for two songs in dream sequence , where she appears normal.

Makarand Anaspure

Dialogues of the film have been written by Mangesh Kulkarni, keeping in mind the mixture of village and city lifestyle. Few dialogues to impress upon the financing institution like IDBI bank were uncalled for, but they have been used to make their media partners happy. The screenplay of the film is otherwise well presented, with good editing work. You will never feel bored throughout the film. Makarand Anaspure as Raiba and Usha Nadkarni as his mother fit in perfectly into their respective roles. Trupti has played her character perfectly, to derive sympathy from the audience. She has paid more attention on her body language, especially her walking style and her voice. Music of the film is good, with two meaningful songs and one dhamaal song inviting the attention.

In all, ‘Agadbam’ is a well presented entertaining film, with a message. The film is sure to invite the attention of viewers, even other than Maharashtrians; for its novel theme. It will not be surprising, if the film maker receives offers for a remake in other languages.

“I always wanted to try something different in Marathi….” -Trupti Bhoir

Trupti Bhoir

Trupti Bhoir is not a new name to the Marathi film industry. As an actress she has already made a mark, be it on stage, television or films. Young and ambitious Trupti who hails from Mumbai, was a part of theatre before entering the mainstream cinema. Her journey began with stage followed by TV serials and films. While in college, she took part in drama competitions and also learned classical dance. This came to her advantage, while venturing into this field.”

Trupti has already bagged state-level awards for best acting, during her college days. Super hit Drama ‘Sahi Re Sahi’ was her first break in professional Marathi theatre. Three years since then Trupti has been a part of this industry and she has done films like ‘Ishya’, ‘Ovalte Bhauraya’, ‘Tujhya Majhya Sansarala……’ , and ‘Paulkhuna’, while her television serials include the famous ‘Vadalvaat’ and ‘Char Diwas Sasuche’.

About her decision to turn towards production of films at such a young age, she reacts, “Even a clapper boy working on the sets, dreams to be a producer someday.”
Trupti Bhoir

As someone has rightly said, “The thing always happens that you really believe in and the belief in a thing makes it happen.” “I always believed in such a thing and after watching something unusual in the presentation of many good films, I got inspired to make something different in the Marathi film industry, so as to deviate from the current trend.”

“I always felt that whatever I present through my Marathi film, others should also appreciate it and try to remake it . More so, Marathi viewers also need variety and if that is not given to them, then how will the Marathi film industry survive?” she questions . She did produce her first film ‘Tujhya Majhya Sansarala Ani Kai Hava’ , which was a family story related to every household. But, later she felt the guilt that she offered nothing different from the traditional Marathi film. However, after coming across the script of ‘Agadbam’, she made up her mind to make this film.

Trupti spoke leisurely to marathimovieworld, just a week before her much awaited film’s release, narrating her experiences. Excerpts from an interview:

Q: Your film ‘Agadbam’ has crossed your original budget of 5 Crore. Aren’t you worried about your returns ?
A: When I took a decision to make this film, many people suggested me to make this film in Hindi, for the variety offered and to get good returns. But, I was more keen to offer this subject in Marathi only. I always felt that Marathi film industry was capable of producing technically perfect and financially backed film. That’s the reason, I am paying more attention on marketing of my film now, though the budget has exceeded. It has certainly crossed 6 Crores and nearing 7 Crores now. I have worked very hard to offer something different and I am confident that people would respond well with a good turn out at the theatres.

Q: Were you ambitious from the childhood to enter this field?
A; Yes, I was always ambitious and very much wanted to be a part of this field. Accordingly, I had prepared my self in that direction, learning dance first. I was very much fond of dancing. But, my mother always reminded me about my priorities and hence had to complete my studies first. With the experience that I gained through drama competitions while in college; the gates of this profession opened doors for me.

Q: How challenging was it, to perform this huge character of Najuka, weighing 250kgs.?
A: The technique of prosthetic make-up has come to India, with actors like Kamal Hasan and Anil Kapoor having tried it before in their films; but to remain in that make-up and work for hours was real challenging for a woman like me. I had to not only carry that extra weight, but also dance and fight in few scenes. On one particular occasion, I remained in that make up for 26 hours, which is a record. More so, I was using this make up done by our own industry person, rather than seeking help of experts from abroad. But, I had confidence in Mr. Pemgirikar and his team. Finally, we have overcome all challenges.

Q: Was this a start to finish shooting schedule?
A; Yes, it was a start to finish shooting, which took 17 days, including shooting of four songs. But, we had planned it properly. Thanks to our director Mr. Satish Motling, for coordinating so well.

Q: You have also used VFX in this film?
A: Yes, it was the demand of the film. Most of our expenditure has gone on that. But, we wanted this film to be technically perfect, besides the use of prosthetic make-up.

Q: How are you marketing this film ?
A: Right from Govinda festival, I started marketing this film, which was then in post production stage. At Dombivali, I was dressed up in the same make up and entertained the crowd from the stage, performing dance. During the Ganapati festivals, I toured Ganapati temples and community celebrations across the state, to seek blessings of people, besides Lord. People from these places appreciated my efforts to dress up with that make up of Najuka’s character and wished me luck for this movie. The show will go on till the release of the film.
