In the past there have been many films on power games played by Politicians when it was for gaining or retaining power. Films like ‘Samana’, ‘Sinhasan’, ‘Sarkarnama’, ‘Zenda’, ‘Aajcha Diwas Majha’ and few others have presented different subjects on the backdrop of this power game in politics. Now, latest released film written by Kshitij Patwardhan and Directed by Sameer Vidwans shows how the power game can split the family of a popular Village Sarpanch Nivrrutti Anna Ubhe, after his sad demise.

Set on the backdrop of a Village-Ambegaon in rural Maharashtra, the film has shown how the selfish people including MLA of the district try to prevent the eldest son Navnath ( Ankush Chaudhari) from contesting the election to carry forward the family tradition. But, he finds the clever game played by MLA( Sabnis) to declare the constituency reserved for women and suggesting the name of his step mother (Alka Kubal) by supporting her for his own political gains. If this is not enough, his otherwise ambitious sister in law Monica (Sonalee) is also convinced to contest by their family’s rival Gadhve( Prasad Oak) . Navnath has no other option but to request his obedient wife Harshada ( Sai Tamhankar) to jump into the fray , making it a triangular contest within the family.

So, the real fight which begins, is witnessed only in the second half of this about 169 minutes long film, when all the interesting happenings take place one after the other. A lot of time has thus been wasted in the first half to show how the outsiders get involved with their dirty political games to split the family. What is remarkable to see, is the strong bonding in spite of the split noticed through some of the emotion filled scenes. There are few twists and turns in the film, including the climax, but what appeals the most are the dialogues exchanged between them by the important characters at different situations.
Veteran actress Alka Kubal is at her best . Ankush Choudhari displays his commitment to social work through his powerful character. Sai Tamhankar does very well , especially when she presents ‘Bharud’ during her election campaign. Sonalee has played the ambitious woman taking it as a challenge. Siddharth does well in his role of a lazy and happy go lucky husband, while Amey Wagh gets his share to show his skills through his ‘not so easy’ character. In the role of family’s opponents Prasad Oak dos well, while Umesh Kamat has very little to his share.

There is no scope for music in this film, but the clever cinematography captures the perfect village atmosphere and close up expressions of every important character very well. Full marks to all the artistes for their wonderful performances and to director Sameer for handling all those important scenes with the help of writer Khsitij . All in all, it is good political based timely film, but should have been shortened lengthwise, especially in the first half.
Trailer of ‘Dhurala’ creates a buzz on social media

Now a days different methods are adopted by film makers to promote their film. But, before going to social media, what is more important is to connect with the general people at the grass root level. Makers of forthcoming Marathi film ‘Dhurala’ did exactly that. They released the trailer of their film at a public place in Mumbai. The place selected was Shramik Gymkhana Maidan and the event was to release the trailer of this film. Perhaps this was the first film to release its trailer at an event open for all.
Anyway, this has helped to generate a lot of curiosity about this film, which is all set to release on 3rd January 2020. Highlight of this film is that after a long time Siddharth Jadhav and Sonalee Kulkarni will be seen together in this film and veteran actress Alka Kubal Known for her emotion filled roles, will be performing a different challenging role in this film. Dashing Ankush Choudhari and popular actress Sai Tamhankar will also be seen in lead important characters through this film. This is clearly indicated through the trailer of this film.
The film is set on the backdrop of political power game in rural Maharashtra and therefore has special significance. Apart from the above five artistes mentioned above, the other equally important artistes of this film are, Prasad Oak, Sulekha Talwalkar, Amey Wagh, Priyadarshan Jadhav and Umesh kamat.

Writer& screenplay writer Upendra Sidhye who shot into fame after receiving Filmfare & Cine Blitz awards for best screenplay for the film ‘Mumbai Meri Jaan’ has now turned writer and director into Marathi with his latest release ‘Girlfriend’. So, being a writer himself, he has systematically developed the screenplay of this film on the backdrop of his own Pune city and using the social media very well, to target the young audience.
Through ‘Girlfriend’ Upendra presents the story of a simple and nice young man Nachiket Pradhan( Amey Wagh) a boy next door, who resembles the looks of Amol Palekar of 70s. Being simple, he has kept himself away from girlfriends. But, that comes in the way of his promotion in office and also spending time with his childhood friends, who are already in relationship. Being a graphic designer himself and active on social media, he prepares a fraudulent fb account by lifting a photo of Payal Mehta( Sai Tamhankar) and naming her as Alisha Narvekar to pose his girlfriend. What happens thereafter is a humour filled screenplay, which entertains especially the young audience.
The office and home atmosphere of Nachiket has been nicely created. Initially moving at a slow pace, the film does pick up little before the interval showing many interesting happenings in Nachiket’s life. His birthday coinciding with Valentines’ day has also been presented well to show his helplessness to find a girlfriend. The entry of Sai Tamhankar has been used well in the screenplay just before the interval. However, showing her in the narrative through a song sequence little before that has spoiled the show.
What keeps the audience engaged post interval is its Spanish connection through the character of Sai Tamhankar . Both Amey and Sai have offered variety through their respective performances, but without the support of other artistes in this film , they would not have been able to offer their best. Thanks to Yatin karyekar, Kavita Lad who play his supportive modern day parents and many other artistes who have played his close friends and office colleagues in the film. Prominent among them is popular TV star Rasika Sunil, who has impressed the most. Unfortunately, this talented actress hasn’t been used much to tap her potential. She is certainly worth considering for lead roles in Marathi films.
Other positive aspects of this film are, the music and background music by Hrishkesh , Saurabh & Jasraj , who have combined well to offer musical entertainment and nice photography of Milind Jog. All in all, ‘Girlfriend’ is an entertaining film which may draw more young audience to cinema halls.

‘Muramba’ – A Sweet and sour recipe of a good creation

Break ups are very common these days, among youngsters in the age group of 18 and 26 years. With the rise in cases of break ups, the habits of smoking and drinking in this age group has also gone up. Dashmi Studios,Huge Productions and Pratisad Productions’ latest released Marathi film ‘Muramba‘ presents one such break up case between young lovers Alok ( Amey Wagh) and Indrayani alias Indu( Mithila Palkar). Both are from well to do families and know each other since their childhood days. While Indu is a hard working career focussed young girl working in an ad agency, Alok is exactly opposite to her, without any focus on his career. Though a Gold medalist MBA, Alok leaves his internship in USA half way and instead prefers a Accounts Professor’s job at a Coaching Institute.

Alok does apply for jobs, but is not confident about himself to take up higher responsibilities. On the other hand his girlfriend Indu is prepared to even take up an assignment for one year with kerala Tourism department and is even willing to go and live there. Alok who himself doesn’t want to take any risks in life, feels the gap between him and Indu widening on this issue of possessiveness. So, after three years of steady friendship, with all sorts of love and sex games, he decides for a break up and accordingly communicates to Indu about his decision.
‘Muramba‘ is actually the happenings taking place in next 24 hours, after their break up. So, we find Alok returning home in the early hours of morning, after spending the night in dejected state at a friend’s terrace. His clever mother (Chinmayee Sumeet) who reads his face, suggests Alok’s father Satyajit Deshmukh( Sachin Khedekar) to speak to him. So, the father with liberal attitude opens the discussion, during breakfast, after inviting Alok to the dining room. To the surprise of parents, Alok discloses that he had a break up with his girlfriend Indu, who is also a frequent visitor to their place, with good relationship with Alok’s parents. In order to prove his point, he even goes to the extent of revealing the drinking habits of Indu during parties.
Alok’s sensible father tries to persuade Alok giving him his own example of having differences with his mother, when he was small. But, Alok tries to justify his decision, explaining the difference between break up before marriage and after marriage. Finally, how the father uses his own methods to bring Alok and Indu together, has been presented in a humorous way, by writer- director Varun Narvekar very skillfully.
For Varun, this is his debut film as a director, but he seems to have used all his experience as assistant director to reputed film makers Sumitra Bhave and Sunil Sukthankar, very cleverly into this film. Being a writer, screenplay writer and dialogue writer of this film, has come to his advantage, while developing every scene in this film, so realistically. Other good thing about him is the selection of artistes. Amey Wagh perfectly suits in the character of Alok and he finds very good support from newcomer singer turned actress Mithila Palkar, who has also perfectly fitted into the role of Indu, the modern career conscious girl of today. Sachin Khedekar plays his part like a versatile actor and delivers what was expected from him with total commitment to his character. In the role of Alok’s mother Chinmayee Sumeet has displayed her emotions very nicely in all those scenes to her share.
Good thing about ‘Muramba‘ film is the communication part between different characters, which goes on to say everything what the director wanted to convey. Watch the scene, when father is in discussion with his son in the roof top garden of their bungalow, while it’s raining. Then, there is important interaction among Alok and his parents, in their car, while going for lunch outside, followed by humor filled discussion on dining table in the hotel, with addition of Indu and so on. But, the scene where Alok visits Indu’s house and the way he is welcomed warmly by Indu’s parents, says it all. The director has cleverly indicated many things through these few scenes, without explaining much about Indu’s parents. Even the intimate scenes between Alok and Indu have been captured well.
Music directors Hrishikesh, Jasraj and Saurabh have limited scope, but they have done their job well. Milind Jog’s cinematography and Avinash Sonavne’s sound design are worth mentioning assets of this film. All in all, ‘Muramba‘ is a Sweet and sour recipe of a good creation.
