Dr Shreeram Lagoo will always be remembered for his remarkable performances
The sad news about the death of Legendary Marathi actor spread very fast on social media yesterday, with condolence messages pouring from celebrities and well wishers. They all recalled his remarkable performances on stage as well as films and his commitment to acting profession. Dr Shreeram Lagoo was 92. His funeral will take place on Thursday according to reliable sources. Having made his debut in acting in late sixties, Dr. Lagoo served this field for almost 50 years. Dr. Lagoo had stopped performing in films for the past few years and made special appearances only in few films, when the film makers shot his scenes at his residence in Pune.
Dr. Lagoo will always be remembered for his performance in the Marathi play ‘Natasamrat’. He performed in about 250 Marathi and Hindi films and also won the Filmfare award for best supporting actor in the film ‘Gharonda’. Dr. Jabbar Patel while paying tributes to the legendary actor, described him as an institution in himself. Every performance from him was worth experiencing. He was all praise for his monologues, which he described as worth listening with closed eyes. With his passing away, film industry has lost a marvel.

Birthplace : Satara
Born on 16th November 1927 in Satara district of Maharashtra, Dr. Shreeram Lagoo completed his college and medical studies from Pune. He was a medical practitioner in Pune, but his passion for theatre could not stop him from becoming an actor on stage. In the year 1969, Dr. Lagoo became a full time stage actor with his debut in Vasant Kanetkar’s Marathi play ‘Ithe Oshalala Mrityu’. Later, he was seen playing title role in that hit play ‘Natasamraat’. From thereon, there was no looking back for him.
In the year 1972, V. Shantaram introduced him on screen in the role of a school master and social reformer through his film ‘Pinjara’ which turned out to be a hit. In the same year, Dr. Lagoo was seen in Jabbar Patel’s film ‘Saamna’ playing a parallel role with a stalwart like Neelu Phule. These two performances invited the attention of Hindi film producers and soon Dr. Lagoo was an automatic choice of well known producers and directors . He was a favourite choice of Prakash Mehra.
With his unlimited gifted talent, Dr.. Lagoo went on to win the hearts of Hindi and Marathi film lovers with his outstanding performances in more than hundred Hindi films and about 40 Marathi films. He also directed a film ‘Zaakol’. For his performance in the film ‘Gharonda’ during the year 1978, he received the prestigious Filmfare award for best supporting actor. Dr. Lagoo has been conferred with many prestigious awards like Kalidas Samman, Master Dinanath Mangeshkar award, Punyabhushan Puraskar and the latest addition being that of Lifetime achievement award at the Pune International Film festival on 7th January 2009.

‘Natasamrat’ muhurat in a big way at Nashik
27th February 2015 is the 103rd birth anniversary of well known Marathi writer Vi.Wa. Shirwadkar, who was popularly known as Kusumagraj. On this day, Marathi film industry paying tribute to the great poet & playwright by launching a film ‘Natasamrat‘ based on his hit play with the same name. The event taken place at 12 noon on 27th February 2015 at Kusumagraj Bhavan, Nashik. Incidentally, Mr. shiwadkar spent most of his life in Nashik.
Now, prominent Marathi actors like Nana Patekar, Vikram Gokhale & Reema Lagoo will be part of this cinematic version, which will be directed by Mahesh Waman Manjrekar. The tragic tale of a well known stage actor Ganpatrao Belwalkar was written by Shirwadkar on the same day 53 years ago. Since then, many well known actors have been part of this play including Dr. Shreeram Lagoo.
The film is being produced jointly by Fin Craft Entertainment, Gajanan Chitra and Great Maratha Entertainment. Vishwas Vinayak Joshi & Nana Gajanan Patekar are the producers of this film. Since both Nana Patekar and Vikram Gokhale are part of this film, It is interesting to know, who is playing which character in this film? But, Reema Lagoo will surely play Kaveri Belwalkar. The characters of Raja-the Bootpolish boy and Vithoba the actor and well wisher of Ganpatrao are also equally important roles in the story, as all other characters are negative characters, excluding the little innocent grand daughter of Ganpatrao. Lifetime achievement award for Dr Shreeram Lagoo
Dr. Shreeram Lagoo was bestowed with the Lifetime achievement award on the inaugural day of Pune International Film festival. At a glittering function held at Pune’s Balgandhrva Rangamandir on 7th January 2009 , the Bhishma Pitamaha of Marathi Movies and Dramas, received this honour from Evergreen Dev Anand, who was present as a chief guest on the occasion. Incidentally, Dr. Lagoo, who had performed in more than 100 Hindi films playing a variety of roles , had also performed in Dev Anand’s ‘Pyar ka Tarana’ and ‘Sau Crore’.
Dr. Lagoo, who began his career in films with V. Shantaram’s hit Marathi film ‘Pinjara’ in the year 1972, acted in almost 150 Hindi and Marathi films over a period of 30 years. He also directed a film ‘Zaakol’ during the year 1980. This award reminds one and all about his contribution to film industry.
