The film’s cast is Prarthana Behere, Vaibhav Tatwawadi, Bhooshan Pradhan, Neha Mahajan, Ila Bhate, Avinash Narkar among others. ‘Coffee Ani Barach Kahi’ is directed by Prakash Kunte. So, get ready to taste this Coffee with love from 3rd April 2015.
‘Baji’ is a well presented film; but, too lengthy
Director Nikhil Mahajan who made his debut as a director through a detective Marathi film ‘Pune 52′, now offers an action & mystery filled film ‘Baji’. The film is also a grand comeback for Shreyas Talpade into Marathi films after 8 years. But, as far as the screenplay of the film is concerned, it seems to be inspired by few Bollywood films like ‘Kaho na pyaar hai’, ‘Sholay’, ‘Ajooba’, ‘Shahenshah’ and ‘Krrish’. Writer- Director Nikhil Mahajan has paid more attention on making this film a technically superior film in Marathi.
The story of this film is set on the backdrop of a small village Shrirangpur in Maharashtra, which is supposed to be created by a king in 11th century. So, it’s all about the ‘hidden treasure’ in the village and a Superhero ‘Baji’, protecting the same from going into the hands of wrong people. Baji also comes to the rescue of villagers, whenever anybody is in trouble. There is a mystery behind this character of ‘Baji’, as he hasn’t appeared in the village for a long time. And that’s how the film begins, raising curiosity of the audience.
Dipu ( Shreyas Talpade) , who runs a grocery shop, keeps hearing the bravery acts of ‘Baji’ from his girlfriend Gouri ( Amruta Khanvilkar), who has been saved from a mishap by Baji. She is the only person from the village, who believes that Baji would return. Another young man from village, Martand ( Jitendra Joshi), turns greedy and tries to secretly search the hidden treasure. When Dipu comes to know about his plans, he opposes him; but, in the process, he is himself beaten up by Martand.
At the stroke of interval, we notice a twist in the screenplay. Post interval, we see a simple looking Dipu turning a brave man, thus coming to the rescue of villagers, who are used as slaves, by Martand to trace the hidden treasure in the village. So, it’s a straight fight between Martand v/s Dipu. But, Dipu’s mother( Ila Bhate) knows some secrets. The screenplay proceeds with action filled suspense, to see the end of wicked Martand, after a thrilling climax, shot on a running goods train.
In ‘Baji’ it is Shreyas & Shreyas all the way. With his variety of acting skills, he is impressive, from beginning till end. Amruta Khanvilkar has supported him well, as his leading lady in the film. In the entire film, she appears without make up, perhaps to meet the requirement of her village girl image. Jitendra Joshi as Martand, commits all heinous acts, in the post interval session. But, his character is shown cruel only through violence filled acts. There isn’t much scope for acting for him. In comparison, his portrayal of villain in recently released ‘Premasathi Coming Soon’ was much better.
The first half an hour of the film fails to take off with the story. A lot of time has been wasted in showing the friendship and intimacy among Shreyas, Amruta and child artiste Pushkar Lonarkar ( ‘Elizabeth Ekadashi’ fame). But, once the film’s story takes off, it keeps the audience engaged, till the end. The new concept of showing the shadow fight has been used well, in one of the action scenes. The climax has been shot well, but for that the credit goes to action director Stunt Silva and the excellent camera work by Vasu Rane. There is one stunt scene performed by Shreyas to rescue a puppy dog from the roof top. He keeps calling him with the name of a top hero of Marathi film. And, this certainly was in a bad taste.
The sound design and background music is appealing enough, to create suitable ambience during important scenes. The fiery dialogues are appropriate; but, they haven’t been used well, to show the conflict between Dipu and Martand. However, the two folk songs are picturised well, with good music composition by Atif Afzal. In special appearance, Shruti Marathe does well, with her sizzling dance performance, in one of the songs. Nagraj Manjule is surprisingly endearing in the role of a Police officer. Good support comes from Priyadarshan Jadhav, Pushakar Lonarkar, Sandesh Kulkarni , Ila Bhate and others.
Produced by a big group of producers, comprising of Arun Rangachari, Vivek Rangachari , Amit Ahirrao, Suhrud Godbole, Deepti Talpade, Hrishikesh Kulkarni, & Nikhil Mahajan, ‘Baji’ is a well presented film, but is too extensive, in its 170 mins length. However, one can still enjoy this film, without any preconceived notion.
‘Saad’ takes a call on Mother-Son emotional relationship

Banner: Abhiruchi Films Producer: Hemant Dabhade Director: Hemant Dabhade Story: Anand Mhasvekar Story Development, Screenplay, Dialogues: Deepak Deulkar Music: Arvind Haldipur Cast: Anlesh Desai, Avantika Salian, Ila Bhate, Arun Nalavade, Yateen Karyekar, Prasad Pandit, Ravi Patvardhan, Sanjeevani Jadhav, Bhagyashree Rane, Vivek Pandkar, Yashwant Chopade, Mayur Pawar, Redhi Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
“To a mother, a son is never a fully grown man; and a son is never a fully grown man until he understands and accepts this about his mother.” Latest released Marathi film produced and directed by Hemant Dabhade takes up a call from a mother living in a village near Pune in Maharashtra, for her son, who is thousand miles away from her, well settled in Malaysia.
The main plot of ‘Saad’ revolves around a 24 year old young man Rahul (Anlesh Desai) ,who is happily living with his well to do parents in Malaysia and is himself an executive in a company. He finds his companion in Sarika (Avantika Salian) from Mumbai , who is on deputation for 4 months in his Malaysia office. Both come closer and friendship grows between them, so much so that on one occasion both are found together by the youngster’s father- Mr. Deosthali (Yatin karyekar) in the bathroom of the house celebrating Rahul’s birthday.
Sarika returns to India and continues to be friendly with Rahul. When Rahul gets his promotion, he is given an option of US or India for his next posting. Surprisingly, he decides to opt for US to make his mother (Redhi) happy. But, a particular occurrence of an event in presence of father and son, takes him into his real past life. Rahul decides to proceed to Mumbai in search of his biological mother to know, why she deserted him.
After reporting for his job in Mumbai, he along with Sarika proceed to Pune, where his foster parents had adopted him, as a one year old child. But, is disappointed , as the Manager of the Children’s home refuses to reveal the name of his biological mother. Rahul gets the support from Sarika’s advocate father (Arun Nalawade). In the meanwhile he finds his accommodation as a paying guest in a posh house of a lonely middle aged lady (Ila Bhate), who treats him like his mother. After winning the legal battle, Rahul finally reunites with his biological mother, who is bed ridden. He comes to know the reality behind his birth and helplessness of his mother. Finally, the film concludes with his Malaysian parents coming to India to meet him, out of love and affection.
It’s not that we have not seen films based on this emotion based subject before. There were many such plots noticed in past Bollywood films. But, makers of ‘Saad’ must have felt that it was the right time to place before the Marathi audience this theme, originated from Anand Mhasvekar on Mother and son emotional relationship. So, writers Deepak Deolkar and Aarti Desai developed the theme into cinematic format with their screenplay and Deepak Deolkar along with Anand Mhasvekar working on the dialogues to make the film filled with emotional touch.
As a hero making his debut, Analesh Desai is just fine. He has to work harder, if he needs to compete with others. Avantika Salian shows promise, with her confident looking performance, though she has limited scope in this film. Veterans Yatin karyekar and Arun Nalawade make their presence felt with the working style of their own. As Rahul’s Malaysian mother- Redhi who also makes her debut in Marathi , just serves the purpose through her presence on the screen . Ila Bhate, Sanjivani Jadhav, Ravi Patwardhan, Prasad Pandit and Bhagyashree Rane have done well through their small roles. Newcomer Mayur Pawar is impressive in his mini role as Rahul’s office colleague, who finds him accommodation in Mumbai. He has succeeded in creating humour through few dialogues he has to his share, in this otherwise emotion filled film.
Music by Arwind Haldipur is satisfactory, but cinematography by Manjunath B Nayaka is superior. He has captured the outdoor locations in Malaysia very well, especially during a song sequence. ‘Saad’ is a sincere effort to present this emotion filled subject. But, few incidences like the boy initially opting for US posting instead of preferring India to reunite with his beloved, with whom he flirts in Malaysia singing and dancing, the use of ‘Planchet’ by the well educated father and son to take a decision, the concluding part where his so called uncle narrating his mother’s tragic story in flashback; and the forced item number, look unrealistic. But, barring these scenes, the film presents the different characters in proper order, making a right choice for their respective roles.
Success can be achieved through hard work and patience – Ila Bhate
Twenty five years ago, she was running her own science laboratory in Mumbai after doing her graduation with Microbiology and acquiring a Post Graduate Diploma in Laboratory management. But, at that stage, she felt that she was not meant for this job. The glamorous field of acting invited her attention. And that’s how Ila Bhate turned an actress, with her first commercial appearance through Marathi play ‘Apradhi’. Today, she is the popular stage and TV actress. With the success of ongoing productions ‘U Turn’ and ‘Eka Lagnachi Doosri Goshta’, Ila has found the place in the heart of stage and Home TV lovers. Marathi Movie World spoke to this talented actress, who has devoted herself to the field of acting for a little more than 25 years now. Excerpts from the interview:
Q: Who encouraged you to take up career in acting ?
A: At a time, when I could not focus on my lab work; my husband realized that my attention was somewhere else. He had spotted the talent in me; during the debates, where I took active interest. With his support, I just tried my acting skills through Arun Johglekar’s marathi play ‘Apradhi‘.
Q: Was that your acting debut ?
A: yes, you may call it so; as I had never acted at professional level before that. Our entire team comprising of Pradeep Velankar, Sunil Shende, Ramakant Deshpande, Mohan Munge, Rajani Velankar and others were from our Vile parle area. I had a small role, but it was effective one. Soon after that in 1989, I had a role to play in a film ‘Vazir’ starring Ashwini Bhave, Vikram Gokhale & Ashok Saraf. In the year 2000, I made my debut on television through DD’s popular serial ‘Damini‘.
Q: In the recent past your play ‘U Turn’ has received a grand success. What you have to say about that ?
A: The success of ‘U Turn’ is its team work. Like the way, a good recipe is planned with proportionate ingredients for a tempting dish; the excellent team work worked in favour of this play. Actually, Anand Mhasvekar had very cleverly presented this subject based on friendship between two opposite sex people in the second half of the life. Mr. Govind Chavan dared to produce this play on a different subject and our theatre audience and critics welcomed it. I would say that the hard work put in by two of us and the technical team was supported by destiny, to attain success.
Q: According to you, how important is the timing and response of the co-artistes ?
A: I always try to attain comfort level with my co-artistes. Be it the mother-son, Husband-wife, Mother-daughter relationship; I am always at ease. It is always necessary to react with required expressions or body language, when the other artiste is delivering his or her dialogues. This helps in making the play or serial popular, with your indirect participation. I don’t perform for my own self; but for the effective presentation of that scene involving others in my presence. I have been fortunate to work with comfort, in the company of popular actors like Vikram Gokhale, Dilip Prabhavalkar, Mohan Joshi, Dr. Girish Oak, Ashok Saraf, Ramesh Bhatkar & Sanjay Mone,
Q: Do you think that training at acting workshops, help in building a career in this field?
A: I wouldn’t like to comment on acting workshops. According to me, acting needs to be in your blood; but, you need to brush up that talent. Success of Workshops will depend upon the capacity of the trainee. The purpose of attending the workshop should not be to attain quick results. There is a lot of hard work is required with patience, while learning other technical matters besides acting. Success will come, but a lot of word work and dedication is required for the same.
Q: Say something about your ongoing popular serial ‘Eka Lagnachi Doosri Goshta’ .?
A: Here again, it’s a good team work. Thanks to Shrirang Godbole, Chinmay Mandlekar and Rajiv Patil, the people behind the screen. But, I would specially like to mention about Lata Ravindra, who has penned the dialogues. Each one of us is so much involved with this serial that we enjoy every moment during the shooting. And that is the success story of this serial.
Q: Among the recently released Marathi films, which one in particular, invited your attention?
A: I like the film ‘Kaksparsha’. It is a well presented film, which takes you almost into that era of pre independence. It has a story, which is serious with tragic end; but that was necessary to respect the original story. All the artistes have given their best performances. The other two films, which have invited my attention are ‘Masala’ and ‘Khel Mandala’; but I have yet to watch them.
