Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

The ghastly 26/11 episode will complete 3 years on Saturday. To remind the people about the ill effects of this event on the lives of those who fought a gallant battle with dreaded terrorists in Mumbai, a new Marathi film ‘Hello Jai Hind!’ pays sincere tributes to all of them.

Though this film has been shot on the backdrop of this event, it goes on to narrate the tragic story of one such brave Police Constable- Shivaji Pawar, attached to Mumbai Police Special Crime Branch. The film goes on to show how he and his wife Durga had to face the challenges in the society, when they decide to take on life only through the right path.

Directed by Gajendra Ahire, and starring Nitin Chandrakant Desai and Trupti Bhoir in the lead role, the film tries to be realistic in its approach, when it comes to speaking on certain administrative decisions on delay in justice and treating a dreaded terrorist under trial like a special guest in the jail. The film does succeed in highlighting this issue timely, with hard hitting dialogues and realistic scenes to clearly indicate how such dreaded terrorists have been taking advantage of our country’s liberal policies. But, unfortunately the film does not conclude well, so as to inspire the audience. It is almost like showing the helplessness of common man, hoping for justice, no matter how long it takes.

Barring the end result, the film has very effectively placed the facts before the audience about the ongoing situation post 26/11 episode. The recent news appearing in the newspapers about the expenditure running into croes of rupees spent over providing the security to the dreaded terrorist and how the taxpayers in Mumbai are paying for it; reminds one and all about the sincerity of the film maker to place before the audience certain facts, inviting their attention. Music being the heart of Marathi films, this film has very effectively presented few songs to go well with certain situations in the screenplay. The wonderful compositions of Illyaraja, who makes his debut in Marathi through this film, match very well with the script. Lagaan Fame -Ballu Saluja’s editing is very appropriate, to keep the screenplay in motion.

Nitin Desai In Hello Jaihind

‘Hello Jai Hind!’ makes its impact through wonderful performances by all the important characters. Nitin Chandrakant Desai, who makes his debut as an actor through this film, does a commendable job, playing the role of a brave Constable. In every scene he has tried to do something different, either through his body language or with his expressions displaying his agony. Playing his courageous wife Durga, Trupti Bhoir has suggested that she is still in the reckoning as a talented actress. Apart from Nitin Desai, one more artiste in the form of Kedar Shinde, displayed his acting skills through an important role of another committed and honest constable living in the neighbourhood of the lead couple.
Among others in the supporting cast, Vinay Apte, Ravindra Mankani, Yatin Karyekar, Amita Khopkar, Vibhavari Deshpande Bollywood actor Murali Sharma and the girl playing the role of Durga’s sister are impressive in their respective limited but important roles. Thanks to Producer Trupti Bhoir and director Gajendra Ahire for using this resourceful medium of cinema to bring to light this most sensitive subject, which is not only stimulating but intensely related to the society.

On duty 24 Taas- The Police Saga

Movie Review by: Prasanna Hulikavi

Presented by Odyssey Corporation ‘On duty 24 taas’ is the latest offering by Kedar Shinde. We are well aware that Kedar is known for his sense of sarcasm and ability to put forth serious issues in a light hearted manner. ‘On duty 24 Taas’ is a mix of comedy and drama genre. It is a tale of the police , and the tussle between theirs role, responsibilities and their personal lives.

The story is slackly based on post 26/episode, when the government and the police department decide to form an anti-terrorist squad after the worst happening. The story takes off from here, with Karan Bedi a valiant police officer appointed to head and train the squad. But the catch here is that he is given a group of de-motivated police force to train. The film takes potshots at the decadent government system, highlighting the problems and the issues in a hilarious manner. It also brings forth the need to modernise the training procedures and the equipment provided to the police like guns and even clothes.

There are scenes in which a robust police ironically called ‘Lahane’ is constantly asking for shoes of his size. The seed idea of the plot is very pertinent to today’s times. But the deviations from the plot are many, and this confuses the viewer as the director tells a lot of small stories through the sub plots. The audience has to grapple with many issues which are left dangling even after the closure, like the suicide of the suspended police officer.

However, some of the scenes are touching, revealing director’s sensitive handling of the subject like when Karan Bedi asks the suspended police man to hand over his Cap and belt.
Amol Kholhe

The dialogues are very witty and make the viewer smile. ‘On Duty 24 Tass’ has some funny moments but sometimes the humour seems to be stretched out, like in one of the scenes the squad has surrounded the terrorist held police station and one of the squad members keeps looking for a place to sleep, while others are busy ordering food… too much to palate. Film tries to do Chaplin style comic pathos, but ends up leaving the audience baffled.

Music and lyrics are used to enhance the overall impact of the movie. The item song seems to be pushed into the plot just to titillate the audience.
Dr Amol Khole does justice to the role of Karan Bedi and shows a lot of emotions in a very understated manner. Kranti Redkar has also done a good job, as the sub inspector and Vijay Chavan is his usual competent self in the supporting role as Zamadar.

All in all, it’s good watch, if you have two hours to spare and want to look at an issue based comedy.

Movie Review by: Kashmira Pawaskar

In today’s busy lifestyle the main problem with most of the married couples is the ‘communication gap’, which creates lot of issues in their life. This is one of the common reasons why divorce rates are increasing day by day. And this is what Kedarh Shinde is trying to explain the audiences through his new light hearted romantic comedy movie ‘Irada Pakka’.
It’s a story about a couple Rohit (Siddharth Jadhav) who owns a Software Company and Aadhya (Sonalee Kulkarni) a pre-school teacher. They are bored of having their married life being very goody -goody with full of love and romance. And so one fine day they decide to fight with each other for a week, so that they could add a little spice into their life. This spice gets too hot after a week’s time, as they get into trouble by fighting continuously. This ultimately leads to a situation, where both of them actually decide to go for divorce. So the story is pushed till the end, to show how they come out of this trouble to be a happy couple.

Sonalee Siddharth, Irada Pakka
The beginning of the movie is inspired by the opening scene lifted from a successful Hollywood movie ‘Mr.and Mrs Smith.’ It does create suspense in the minds of viewers who are surprised to see this kind of scene in a comedy flick. Some part of the film even reminds of Kedarh‘s previous film ‘Yenda kartvya Aahe’, which also has a similar story revolving around newly married couple. But, as predicted, it’s totally Kedarh’s movie. The movie can be very well remembered for its amazing cinematography, especially used during the songs.

Siddharth Jadhav has worked very hard and has given full justice to the role with the support of Sonalee Kulkarni, whose character of being a lovely innocent wife, makes a notion. The other characters of the movie have also given their best. They are : Smita Jaykar as Aadhya’s divorced and independent mother , Kamlakar Sathputhe who plays the role of a ‘bhai’and Mohan Joshi as Aadhya’s father.

Music for this film is provided by a young duo Nilesh Moharir & Pankaj Pushkar and their song ‘Bhijun Gela Vara’ leaves behind good impression. The USP of the film is a song at the end of the film, featuring 21 celebrities with Ramdas Padhye, Atmaram Bhende, Shreyas Talpade & others on the Lyrics by Ashwini Shende & Sumati Wankhede. Also the art direction is superior, in comparison to other marathi movies.

Movie Review by:  Pradip Patil

Zee talkies and Kedar Shinde, Bharat Jadhav as Galgale, a star cast consiting of Siddharth Jadhav, Ramesh Dev and Vitthal Umap. Everything about ‘Galgale Nighale…’ is Class one, so the expectations are sky high. But unfortunately, it turns out be one the worst films made in recent times. It’s really saddening to see so many talented people associated with such a bad film.

Kedar’s all previous films are known for sheer mind numbing energy which makes you overlook any illogicalities. But this time the film suffers from a lethargy that seems to have affected everyone associated with this movie. At certain times the film seems to take seriousness similar to that of RGV’s Sarkar and for the rest of times it reminds you of Akshay Kumar’s hit Welcome. But throughout those 2.15 hour, the film never finds its own form.

The film falters in every aspect. It has two of the most brilliant actors of current times and yet fails to take the full advantage. The weak story leads to even weaker screenplay. Even the maverick Kedar is out of form this time, It feels as if he has exhausted all his creativity. There are many moments in the cinema that will make you feel why someone even bothered to go ahead with such a silly thing. Characters make appearance for 5- 6 minutes and then disappear, only to reappear later on when you have almost forgotten about them. And I am not talking about secondary characters. All the main characters are treated similarly.
Initially it seems as if the film is attempting an exploration of Galgale’s world and why he behaves in an eccentric way, but this aspect is dealt with just a single scene and then focus shifts to mafia family and love story. There was ample scope to extract funny moments from the conflicts arising because of Galgale’s innocence and the mafia family, instead of that the film incorporates the murder mystery and that too a feeble one.
Galgale Nighale
The intial one hour seems almost unnecessary, the script could have done without involving Galgale’s office in it. The characters and the
scenes from Galgale’s workplace make no worthy contribution to the film. The Galgale’s antics seems torturous after initial few moments.

It offers nothing new. Those who have already seen Galgale in Sahi Re Sahi will be disgusted and those who are watching him for first time will be bored.

The only moment when the film shows some spark is 5 minutes before the interval, when Galgale (Bharat Jadhav) reaches Gauri’s (Ketaki Thatte) house. But it’s just a false hope, the second half is equally bad as the first half. The movie is so dull that the viewers won’t be bothered about anything about that is happening on the screen till the climax is reached, which is infact good for Kedar. Whatever happens during those ending reels is simply ridiculous.

The acting is nothing to write about. Bhara Jadhav as confused Galgale offers nothing new. The rest of the cast is also OK. The dialogs are totally off the mark and add to it the Koli language, it becomes almost impossible to understand what’s happening. The background music is just cheap imitation of some hindi films. One of the song has so loud music track that it’s hard to comprehend the lyrics. Even the makeup seems amaturish.

To sum it up, skip this and wait till the director and his team find their form next time. It’s in the best interest of all !

Bakula Namdev Ghotale, Directed by Kedar Shinde

Bakula Namdev Ghotale
Rating: ★★
Presenter: Shemaroo Entertainment
Producer: Atul Maroo, Ketan Maru
Director: Kedar Shinde
Dialogue & Lyrics: Machindra More
Music: Devdutt Sabale
Cast: Bharat Jadhav, Siddharth Jadhav, Sonali Kulkarni, Vijay Chavan, Kushal Badrike, Ganesh Revdekar…
Movie Review by: Pradip Patil

Kedar Shinde and Shemaroo films continue their successful association with the latest movie ‘Bakula Namdev Ghotale’. To churn out 3 movies in the gap of 6 months, now that’s something interesting.

This time Kedar plays it safe by doing what he does best, That is directing a comdey. Yet there are few important things that show that he is indeed trying to do something new instead of sticking to the tried and tested path. So let’s have a look at those ‘different’ things.

First of all, This movie has Bharat Jadhav, but not as a hero. This time he is the bad guy.

Second and I think most important, it has Siddhart Jadhav in the role of protagonist, though he is not your typical hero material.

And last but not the least, this movie atleast deals with an issue which is much discussed these days, but let me tell you that’s not the main aim of this movie. Every new movie from Kedar raises the expectations high, so does his latest offering entertains? The answer is yes, but not as much as his earlier works.

The movie’s biggest drawback is it’s weak first half. The plot revolves around a newly wed couple Namdev (A forgetful simpleton), Bakula (Namya’s intelligent wife) and Ghotale (the wicked landlord). When Namya and Bakula come to Ghotale to take his blessing, Ghotale falls for Bakula and decides to win her at any cost. So he hatches a plan to kill namya. But namya survives the attack and returns home after few days. But its too late as the compensation money for Namya’s accidental death is about to be handed to bakula. So what games the couple play to make the most of the situation forms the rest of the story.

Unfortunately the first half drags on. The characters are effectively established but it could have been easliy achieved with less reels. The first half leaves viewers hoping for more action but nothing happens except few funny moments.

In the second half, Kedar has managed to salvage the movie and from there onwards it is total timepass. The second half is so well made that it actually makes you overlook the insipid first half. Full marks to the entire team for this. Ghaotale and Bakula’s efforts to outsmart each other keeps the audience entertained.

Devdatta Sabale’s music works pretty well. The movie has two lavani songs, both are picturised on gorgeous Resham Tipnis. The another duet song is really catchy and nicely picturised. I bet you will be humming it after the movie. Dialogs are funny and serve their purpose well.

Newcomer Sonali Kulkarni plays her part with confidence. Siddhart Jadhav is fun to watch and does justice to his role. Bharat Jadhav is excellent, Even though his character is picturised as funny for most of the part, he effectively portrays the mean and cunning shades of the character. I wonder why an actor like Vijay Chavan is wasted in such an insignificant role.

Bakula Namdev Ghotale has its own faults, but it does what it is supposed to do, that is to make you laugh.

Kedar Shinde, Director

Kedar Shinde, Director

How was the beginning? Acting or Direction?
I am the grandson of Shahir Sable. There was a family background for my profession. I was very passionate about acting and all the things related to this field. First I started with Acting, through the programme ‘Maharashtrachi Lokdhara’. After that I did One Act Play with Bharat Jadhav, Ankush Chaudhari. And then we also did some commercial comedy plays like ‘Sahi re Sahi’, ‘Hasa chakat-fu’, etc….. And people are enjoying them a lot and we are happy that all the shows are housefull in Pune, Bombay and other cities.

Kedar Shinde, DirectorWhen you have started story writing and direction?
I was having attraction towards story writing and direction when I was doing plays. Then I got chance to direct the plays, serials. After the great success of the plays and serials I started to direct the Marathi movie. ‘Majha navara tujhi bayko’, ‘Jatra’, ‘Agabai Arrechcha’, ‘Yanda kartavya ahe’ and just released ‘Mukkampost London’ are some movies that I have directed. The screen-play and story was also written by me of all the movies. All the movies are successful and have done the good business on Marathi box office.

Have you decided to write and direct only comedy plays and movies?
From the beginning of my career in this field I have only done comedy. And our viewers also expect the great comedy from the team. And I always like to do and give the audience, what they want. That is another thing that I always arrange the different topics in my movies to entertain the viewer. I always try to create comedy as there may be some seriousness, emotions present in the movie. I don’t want to change the equation “Kedar Shinde=Dhammal Comedy”.

Something about your recently released ‘Mukkampost London’.
The ‘Mukkampost London’ is also a comedy movie. It is shot in London and Satara. This movie is a combination of both, comedy and emotions. This is the experiment to change the track from comedy to other subjects. Bharat Jadhav, Mohan Joshi and Mrunmayi Lagu had done their job very well in this movie. This time , we are presenting the different story through this movie.

Have you decided to direct only Marathi movies?
It is not decided yet. But as I am Marathi I would like to do only Marathi movies. Because in this industry there are so many people who want to do something for Marathi. They are always trying to do different things for Marathi movies. The thinking of viewers has changed that there is nothing new in the Marathi movies. So I’m trying to get the Marathi viewers back to Marathi movies. Marathi viewer must be satisfied by Marathi movies. So though I get the chance to do a Hindi movie I will prefer to do Marathi movie. I will always try to create good stories for Marathi movies.

The forthcoming movies you have directed?
My 2-3 movies are releasing in next 2-3 months. I have not only directed the movies but also the story and screenplay is written by me. ‘Bakula Namdev Ghotale’ is the title of the movie and the star cast for this movie is Bharat Jadhav, Siddharth Jadhav and Sonali Kulkarni from Pune as a debutant actress. And another is ‘Yancha Kahi Nem Nahi’. This is also a comedy. In this movie, Ankush Chaudhari, Bharat Jadhav and Siddhartha Jadhav are coming together after the great success of ‘Majha Navara Tujhi Bayko’ with Jaywant Wadkar and Resham Tipnis. These movies will definitely entertain the viewers.

Movie Review by:  Pradip Patil

This is the only way to enjoy this mad mad comedy offered by Kedar Shinde and his gang. In a long while, I haven’t seen a movie like ‘Jatra’. This is an out & out masala entertainment and that’s it, Nothing else. This is the kind of movie which begs not to be taken seriously. You might find people complaining about lack of lagic and stroyline but take my word for it. A movie like ‘Jatra’ doesn’t require these things to keep
you entertained. It has many more things for that purpose.

This movie can be compared with Kedar’s plays like Sahi re Sahi, Locha zala re and TV shows like ‘Hasaa Chakatfu’. The movie has no storyline and yet it manages to capture your attention.Kedar has pulled all the tricks to esure that viewers remains engaged. The events take place at such a fast pace that you hardly get time to think at all. The dialogues are another plus point of this film. One must give the credits to all the actors who have given such energetic performances. The movie belongs to Bharat Jadhav, Vijay Chavan and Siddharth Jadahv.

The movie has two catchy songs and both are hit all over Maharashtra. The movie begins with an Item Number by Ankush Chowdhary and the Kombadi Song in the second half is simply hilarious. The movie is
technically slick.

I would like few words of caution though -If what you seek is a sensible and intellectual movie (Are there any?) then please please stay away from ‘Jatra’. Otherwise go ahead and enjoy this mad mad comedy.

Afterall a healthy dose of laughter never does a harm, you see.
