Indian film industry has completed 100 years. All these years, we have seen the contribution of women in this industry. Even in Marathi, we have seen few women film makers, presenting quality films. Recently, we saw actress Mrinal Kulkarni turning to direction through her debut film ‘Prem Mhanje Prem Mhanje Prem Asata’. Now, popular Marathi actress Kranti Redkar has also switched over to direction.

“I am very friendly and fun loving in real life ” – Kranti Redkar
Nothing succeeds like the appearance of success. Many a times, You never know which is the stepping stone for your success. The super hit popular Marathi song ‘Kombdi palali, tangdi dharun ….langadi ghalaya laagli’ brought into fame Kranti Redkar as an actress in Marathi film industry. The manner in which she performed on the compelling dancing beats of this song, it easily got registered as a perfect item number of Marathi films. Although, she shot into limelight as a dancer, Kranti as an actress had all the relevant requirements to play different kinds of roles. Above all, she had a striking personality of her own. Watching her play that mod girl in action packed ‘Target’ and that limited yet noticeable emotion filled role in ‘Shikshanachya Aaichha Gho’, clearly indicated that she was a button artiste with a lot of potential to perform at any given situation spontaneously.
Having begun her acting career while studying in Ruia College, Mumbai, she came in contact with Kedar Shinde, who then directed her one act plays for different state level competitions. For five years, she was associated with theatre, besides pursuing her college studies. “In our country, one needs to complete the graduation and then shift to their respective profession of choice, as per our family tradition and I observed that,” says Kranti . “I did exactly the same, as I got attracted to this profession with total involvement,” she quips. Having also performed in two Bollywood films, i.e. Prakash Jha’s ‘Gangajaal’ (as Apoorva-the girl who is kidnapped) and as Raaji, the statistics lecturer in the film ‘U Bomsi n Me’, Kranti is now eagerly waiting for her much awaited Marathi film release ‘Laadi Goadi’, where she is playing lead opposite Sanjay Narvekar. It is a multi-starrer Marathi film with other co-stars like Resham Tipnis, Varsha Usgaonkar, Tushar Dalvi, Subodh Bhave and others. Her other Marathi films in the pipeline are Mahesh Manjrekar’s ‘Shahanpan Degaa Deva’, Kedar Shinde’s ‘On Duty 24 Taas’ and Atul Ketkar’s untitled film. There is also one Hindi production ‘Boys Toh Boys Hain’ with popular comedy stars from Bollywood. With a perfect physique and spontaneity to act at any given time, Kranti has a great future ahead. Marathi Movie world spoke to this radiant personality. Excerpts from an interview
Q: Did you begin your acting career through ‘Jatra’ ?
A: No. My debut in films was through a Marathi film ‘Soon Asavi Ashi’ in the year 2000 opposite Ankush Choudhary. Later I also played an important character of a kidnapped girl- Apoorva in Prakash Jha’s Hindi film ‘Gangajaal’. Actually, I began my acting career through stage. For five years, it was almost like doing my graduation in acting besides my degree course in college.
Q: How important is your educational qualification in your acting career ?
A: As I said before, with my five years of training on stage was itself like taking a degree in acting, besides my college degree. In our country, completing graduation is the base of any career you choose later. It’s not like other countries, where after High school, children opt for their choice of career. My parents had strictly told me to complete graduation first and then think of my career. But, I had made up my mind to choose acting as my career. I personally feel that at 18, you become wise enough to decide what is good for you. Further, the importance of education is that if by chance you fail in this profession, you can at least have a choice of trying out something else.
Q: You have also performed in some of Hindi serials like ‘Chittor Ki Raani Padmini….’, ‘Simply Sapne’ and others. How was your experience there ?
A: Frankly speaking, anyone would be tempted to act in such serials, where you are paid well and where you get an opportunity to get dressed up in variety of costumes. I played the character of Nagmati in ‘Chittor ki Raani Padmini…’ because it was based on a historical theme with Rajasthani culture. However, I had less scope to act there. I would rather love to perform any kind of role, where there is more scope for emotions. ‘Ladies Special’ was one such serial, where I enjoyed every happening with artistes like Neena Gupta and others around. It certainly involves you to give your best under such a situation.
Q: You have become very popular with ‘kombdi song’ in ‘Jatra’ with your mesmerizing dance performance. Tell us your experience about this song ?
A: I am also associated with Indian and English theatre with people like Bharat Dabholkar, Shubha Khote & Feroze Khan. During one such performance in Dubai, I happened to visit a Pub along with my co-artistes, where I was shocked to find this song being played there, with some locals dancing and enjoying the tunes of this song. Till then, I never knew about its worldwide popularity. It was a great moment to experience.
Q: You have performed different characters with grey shades, sometimes a strong headed, ambitious woman. How is Kranti in real life ?
A: I am very friendly and fun loving in real life. That’s what my friends say. Somehow, I try to co-ordinate well with all my friends and also colleagues, while at work.
Q: If given an option, what would be your priority? Film or a Serial ?
A: Obviously, films. When you are signed for a serial, you need to give time and dates in advance and therefore you remain committed and tied-up with that. And, it goes on for a year or may be more. For a film, it is not so. You can easily manage 5 or more films in a year without any dates problem.
Q: Which are your forthcoming films ?
A: I am eagerly waiting for the release of ‘Laadi Goadi’ which will be around coming Ganapti festival time. Then, there are films like ‘Shahanpan Dega Devaa’ and ‘On Duty 24 Taas’ to follow.
Q: What’s so special about ‘Laadi Goadi’ ?
A: It is a totally different kind of experiment in films and I am sure, it will offer something new to Marathi film audience. Watch me play Hema Malini in this film. Actually, I am playing the character of the type of Hema Malini, wearing all those costumes that she wore in different films. Sanjay Narvekar, who plays opposite me, will play Dharmendra. It’s a fun filled film, with Resham Tipnis and Varsha Usgaonkar being the other two heroines. You will find a lot of similarity in the performances of other artistes like Tushar Dalvi, Subodh Bhave with those like Amitabh Bachchan and Jeetendra. And guess, who resembles Sridevi ?
‘Pipani’ presents a Black comedy to deliver a timely message

We are all aware that India is agriculture based country with around 60% of its population directly or indirectly dependent on agriculture, as their income. But, in India, Agriculture is often attributed as gambling with seasonal monsoon. The failure of seasonal monsoon, leads to a series of droughts. But, sometimes, un-seasonal monsoon showers, also creates havoc on crop with heavy loss, resulting in lack of better prices to farmers. But, mainly, it is the exploitation by the Middlemen, the main cause of a series of suicides committed by farmers across India.
It is said that on an average, one farmer commits suicide every 30 minutes in India. And, the state of Maharashtra is among the leading states reporting such tragedies. Latest released film ‘Pipani’ is all about this tragic situation in our country, which has been shot on the backdrop of a village in Vidarbha region in Maharashtra. Now, to highlight the situation, film maker Gajendra Ahire has used a plot, where a Hollywood film maker Freda Russel (Kristin Piesker) is shown making a feature film, to invite the attention of the world to this tragic state of farmers in this region and the reality behind it.
The film opens with a narrator Dnyaneshwar Tembhre (Chandrakant Kulkarni) a Circle officer of the Block, posted by the State Government. When he receives a request from his department to offer all the help to the visiting foreigner, he obliges by deputing Popat Jhadbuke (Makarand Anaspure) his most trusted man, to help the lady. Popat arranges her meetings with different people, beginning with Nanda (Hemangi Kavi), a widow, whose farmer husband has recently committed suicide.
Highly impressed with the location, when Freda returns with her unit team to shoot a film, her female character Kranti (an actress) seeks help from Nanda to be more realistic through her body language. The film also shows actor Ravi kale playing her husband and veteran actor Ramesh Deo playing her father in law. A Film which has been shot in this film, focuses more on the emotional part of the artistes and tries to show how the middlemen cheat the farmers from getting their dues. The scenes cover damage to crop due to un-seasonal rains and the helplessness of the farmers, forcing them to commit suicide.
But, what is more important is director Gajendra Ahire throwing light on other aspects; such as the effect of the happenings during the shooting, on the real life of the local villagers and how the middlemen in the film production department exploit the villagers. The director has tried to create humour through the character of Popat, who makes hard hitting statements in his typical style, blaming the administration for their apathy to uplift the lives of farmers with schemes and packages to boost their morale. There is one character who is shown as a helper to Popal (Vikas Samudre), who keeps on reminding him about the schemes.
Some form of humour is also created in one of the scenes, where Ravi kale, in an attempt to show his superiority to the actress kranti, tells her that he is a big actor, having worked with Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, when the veteran actor Ramesh Deo playing his old father is shown reacting, “So what ? I have performed with Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan together.” There are many such humour filled sequences, which openly point out the neglect by the Government department, in finding the solution towards development of the Block. The transfer of the SDO to Pune, clearly goes on to say everything, after the shoot of the film is over.
The film conveys a strong message to the entire world about the ground level situation in this so called progressive nation. When Danny Boyle could make a film like ‘Slumdog Millionnaire’ projecting the slums of Mumbai in a cheap mediocre style, ‘Pipani’ has rightly concluded indicating that the film made by Freda Russel reflecting the real situation of the village can also win Oscars award. When Popat tells this news to an old villager, he replies, “What have we got?”. And, that delivers the film’s message. The film has openly used the advertisements of the sponsors, when Popat calls it an official break, before the commercial scene was played.
As a Hollywood director Kristin Piesker from Germany has done a good job. She is very much at ease, in her debut film. Makarand Anaspure is best suited in the role of Popat. Kranti Redkar finds the best opportunity to display her talent as an actress in search of a role, to win national award. Ravi kale, Chandrakant Kulkarni and Ramesh Deo look very natural in their respective roles. Vaibhav Mangle, Bharat Ganeshpure and Vikas Samudre have little to their share; but their presence counts. But, it is Hemangi Kavi, who invites all the attention. She presents a perfect village woman with her body language and excellent spontaneous expressions. Chaitanya Adkar’s music is well suited to this subject and backdrop and Chandrashekar Aiyer’s cinematography captures some of the realistic emotion filled scenes. Editing by Santosh Gothoskar is perfect. ‘Pipani’ produced by Baburao Bhor, is a sincere attempt to present reality through a cinematic format. You may call it a Black comedy.
‘No Entry’ entertains; but, lacks Marathi touch
Rating: 2.5
Banner: Underground Films Pvt. Ltd. Producer: Premnath Rajagopalan, Nikhil Saini. Director: Ankush Choudhary Lyrics: Guru Thakur Music: Nakash – Sargam Cast: Bharat Jadhav, Kranti Redkar, Ankush Choudhary, Saie Tamhankar, Aniket Vishwasrao, Manava Naik, Sai Lokur, Paddy (Pandharinath Kamble) Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
Well, we are all aware that new Marathi film ‘No Entry Pudhe Dhoka Aahey’ is a remake of popular Hindi comedy ‘No Entry’. But, while making this film in Marathi, the entire film has been copied scene to scene, instead of offering it a Marathi touch. As a result, it has failed to hold the audience for entire 163 minute show on the screen. Nevertheless, being a sit- com, the film has succeeded in offering the expected entertainment through good performances coming from all the seven important artistes in the film.
The original film had succeeded in creating laughter, because the theme was new to the audience. Moreover, in Maharashtra most of the Marathi film goers watch Hindi films. Even if they haven’t watched this original film in theatres, they must have surely watched it on their TV screens and that too in repeat runs. All that was expected was a Marathi touch to this theme; but, it has gone the Bollywood way, even to the extent of retaining the names of all the characters. If they could change the name of MLA, why couldn’t they find suitable names for seven important characters ?
When we see some of the remakes of South films in Hindi, these original films are not watched by majority of the cine goers from places other than south region. And hence, such films whether action or comedy, turn out to be successful in North India including Maharashtra. But, same is not the case, with remake of Hindi film in Marathi. It may be kept in mind that about 50 % of the Hindi film’s business is from Maharashtra.
Now, the million dollar question still remains to be answered is, whether a remake of popular Hindi comedy film and that too with predictable sequences, will be accepted in Marathi ? Let, the people of Maharashtra decide the fate of this film. The opening day, witnessed very poor response at a multiplex in the suburbs. Now, the weekend collections will decide the success of this film.
Looking at the efforts put in, it may be mentioned that the film has been shot with the high quality standard observed in big budget Hindi cinema,, with good camera work by Arwind Soni and perfect music by Nakash-Sargam. The selection of locations are good, including picturesque Goa. Even the titles of the film have been presented well. But, there seemed to be some budgeting on costumes of the artistes and the dancers in the song sequences. In the case of Sai Tamhankar, who played an important character of Bobby, there wasn’t much issue of costumes, as the film has been focused on her. She is the centre of attraction in this film. And, she has lived up to the expectations of the film maker. One can say that she has offered more than what Bipasha could offer in the original, as far as glamour is concerned.
Looking at the performances of others, both Bharat Jadhav as Kishan and Kranti Redkar as Kajal match well in their respective roles, with their perfect timing for comedy. Aniket Vishwasrao as Shekhar gets a kind of role, which has tested his strengths in comedy sequences. And he has done extremely well. Manwa Naik playing Sanjana also supports well as his partner. Both Ankush Choudhary (Prem) and Sai Lokur (his wife Pooja) have limited scope, especially after interval, but they too have done well. Paddy kamble is just fine as Bobby’s bodyguard. Anant Jog is good as fun loving MLA. Viju Khote does well in the small role, he has to his share.
As predicted, this film is a musical sitcom with good performances. But, it has certainly failed to offer the Marathi feel to the characters.
‘Teen Baika Fajiti Aika’ – a masala stuffed comedy
Rating: na
Banner: Sai Shankar Films Producer: Shankar Mitkari Director: Raju Parsekar Story: Rajan Agrawal Screenplay: Arvind Jagtap, Dilip Yadaw Cinematographer: Abdul Wahab Cast: Makarand Anaspure , Kranti Redkar , Nisha Purulekar , Tejshree Khele , Surkha Kutchi , Vijay Chavan, Kuldip Pawar , Singers: Anand Sinde , Reshma Sonvane, tyagaraj Khadilkar, Eknath Mali Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
At a time when Marathi films are winning the national awards for their realistic sensible presentation, the wave of comedy films hasn’t stopped. Now, coinciding with the new Maharashtian year, we find one Masala stuffed comedy film, made by veteran director Raju Parsekar. Being well versed with the art of film making at the commercial level, the director has picked up this time a subject based on marital relations, where the husband belonging to a traditionally rich family from a village, is required to marry another woman with the kind permission of his first wife.
Makarand Anaspure who plays the 32 year old son- Vishwasrao of a deceased landlord of a village, is already married to Madhavi ( Nisha Parulekar), but the couple has no issue after 5 years of marriage. So the mother-in-law does not leave any opportunity to taunt her daughter in law. One day, when the family attend a wedding of a close family friend’s daughter- Prajakta ( Kranti Redkar) , they find the Bridegroom deserting his would be wife, over dowry issue. As per the village tradition, this is considered inauspicious for the girl. So, Vishwasrao’s mother, who is present there, suggests her son to marry the girl, to fulfill her wish of getting a heir to her family. When Madhavi also agrees for the same, Prajakta arrives at home. Both the girls get along well with each other; but they don’t find time for Vishwasrao. So, to teach them a lesson, Vishwasrao hires a girl, to pose as his girlfriend.
But, his live in show off relationship with the new girl – Pari ( Tejashree Khele), invites a new problem for him. The Police officer( Kuldeep Pawar) , who is under Vishwasrao’s obligation, keeps on coming and going to create the required humour in the screenplay. Finally, the film ends with a climax, in a typical Priyadarshan style comedy. Director Raju Parsekar realizing the potential of Makarand Anaspure to play such a character, has used his timing very well, whether it was with Kranti, Nisha or Tejashree. But, his interaction on three occasions with Kuldeep Pawar, creates the required humour in this fast paced film.
Most of the sequences in the film are picturised on Chiranjivi style Telugu films. But, the base being Maharashtra, the director has not deviated from the typical semi urban culture in the state. Some of the local idioms and phrases have been timed well in the screenplay by Arwind Jagtap. Therefore, if the audience decide to forget their logical thinking process, the film is good enough to entertain them for little more than two hours. The focus of the film maker seems to be on getting good collections from single screen theatres at district places like Pune, Nashik, Kolapur, Satara, Nagpur and other places in Western Maharashtra.
The leading man of the film Makarand Anaspure has played the flamboyant Vishwasrao in his typical style. Suited to his rich family character background, he is also shown wearing some designer tops. Surekha Kudchi perfectly fits into the character of his mother with authority. Vijay Chavan makes his special appearances through the photo frame to remind his wife about his last wish. His son Varad Chavan has a small negative role. All the three leading ladies have equal share to their credit and have done a good job. Kranti in particular has timed her mimicry well besides usage of broken English . The new girl Tejashree makes her surprise entry at the stroke of interval. She too has done her job well in the company of all known artistes. Perhaps, her exposure to south films has come to her advantage. Among the other artistes, Digamber Naik and the girl playing the maid servant-Madhuri have done their jobs well.
Music and Camera are the plus points of this film. Photography by Wahab is good . All the five songs are well timed. The already popular Rikshawala song has been cleverly picturised on Manasi Naik, who is now experienced enough to perform such item numbers. But, if the audience is keen on watching this item number, they should not miss the beginning of the film, as the song forms part of first ten minutes of the film. As a director, Raju Parsekar has done a fairly good job to offer entertainment with U/A crertification, compared to what he offered in the films like ‘Durga Mhantyat Mala’ and ‘Tata Birla Ani Laila’ in the recent past.
On duty 24 Taas- The Police Saga
Rating: **
Presenter: Odyssey Corporation Ltd. Producer: Pankaj Shah, Vina Dimanshu Mehta, Pradip Goradiya Direction: Kedar Shinde Camera: Santosh Pawar Camera: Sanjay Jadhav Music: Pankaj Pushkar Cast: Dr Amol Kolhe, Vijay Chavhan, Kranti Redkar Movie Review by: Prasanna Hulikavi |
Presented by Odyssey Corporation ‘On duty 24 taas’ is the latest offering by Kedar Shinde. We are well aware that Kedar is known for his sense of sarcasm and ability to put forth serious issues in a light hearted manner. ‘On duty 24 Taas’ is a mix of comedy and drama genre. It is a tale of the police , and the tussle between theirs role, responsibilities and their personal lives.
The story is slackly based on post 26/episode, when the government and the police department decide to form an anti-terrorist squad after the worst happening. The story takes off from here, with Karan Bedi a valiant police officer appointed to head and train the squad. But the catch here is that he is given a group of de-motivated police force to train. The film takes potshots at the decadent government system, highlighting the problems and the issues in a hilarious manner. It also brings forth the need to modernise the training procedures and the equipment provided to the police like guns and even clothes.
There are scenes in which a robust police ironically called ‘Lahane’ is constantly asking for shoes of his size. The seed idea of the plot is very pertinent to today’s times. But the deviations from the plot are many, and this confuses the viewer as the director tells a lot of small stories through the sub plots. The audience has to grapple with many issues which are left dangling even after the closure, like the suicide of the suspended police officer.
However, some of the scenes are touching, revealing director’s sensitive handling of the subject like when Karan Bedi asks the suspended police man to hand over his Cap and belt.
The dialogues are very witty and make the viewer smile. ‘On Duty 24 Tass’ has some funny moments but sometimes the humour seems to be stretched out, like in one of the scenes the squad has surrounded the terrorist held police station and one of the squad members keeps looking for a place to sleep, while others are busy ordering food… too much to palate. Film tries to do Chaplin style comic pathos, but ends up leaving the audience baffled.
Music and lyrics are used to enhance the overall impact of the movie. The item song seems to be pushed into the plot just to titillate the audience.
Dr Amol Khole does justice to the role of Karan Bedi and shows a lot of emotions in a very understated manner. Kranti Redkar has also done a good job, as the sub inspector and Vijay Chavan is his usual competent self in the supporting role as Zamadar.
All in all, it’s good watch, if you have two hours to spare and want to look at an issue based comedy.

‘JATRA’ Keep aside the logic
Rating: ★★1/2
Producer: Mrs.Bela Shinde Story, Screenplay & Director: Kedar Shinde Music: Ajay – Atul Cast: Bharat Jadhav, Kranti Redkar, Vijay Chavan, Priya Berde, Siddharth Jadhav, Sanjay Khapre, Kushal Badrike, Ramesh Vani, Ganesh Khedekar, Viju Khote, Upendra Limaye… Movie Review by: Pradip Patil |
This is the only way to enjoy this mad mad comedy offered by Kedar Shinde and his gang. In a long while, I haven’t seen a movie like ‘Jatra’. This is an out & out masala entertainment and that’s it, Nothing else. This is the kind of movie which begs not to be taken seriously. You might find people complaining about lack of lagic and stroyline but take my word for it. A movie like ‘Jatra’ doesn’t require these things to keep
you entertained. It has many more things for that purpose.
This movie can be compared with Kedar’s plays like Sahi re Sahi, Locha zala re and TV shows like ‘Hasaa Chakatfu’. The movie has no storyline and yet it manages to capture your attention.Kedar has pulled all the tricks to esure that viewers remains engaged. The events take place at such a fast pace that you hardly get time to think at all. The dialogues are another plus point of this film. One must give the credits to all the actors who have given such energetic performances. The movie belongs to Bharat Jadhav, Vijay Chavan and Siddharth Jadahv.
The movie has two catchy songs and both are hit all over Maharashtra. The movie begins with an Item Number by Ankush Chowdhary and the Kombadi Song in the second half is simply hilarious. The movie is
technically slick.
I would like few words of caution though -If what you seek is a sensible and intellectual movie (Are there any?) then please please stay away from ‘Jatra’. Otherwise go ahead and enjoy this mad mad comedy.
Afterall a healthy dose of laughter never does a harm, you see.
