Namrata Gaikwad impresses in the teaser of ‘Zari’
Producer Radha Bidkar and director Raju Meshram are making a film ‘Zari’, which is based on a real life incident. Recently the poster and teaser of this film was unveiled in presence of dignitaries like Finance Minister of Maharashtra Mr. Sudhir Munguntiwar and other Ministers of state, MLA’s Neelam Gorhe and others , along with artistes from the film Anant Jog, Milind Shinde, Tukaram Bidkar, Nisha Parulekar, Namrata Gaikwad, & Aniket Kelkar. In the teaser of the film, it is only Namrata Gaikwad, who clearly indicates that the film revolves around her character.
This film throws light on a very sensitive issue of exploitation of women in remote areas of Vidarbha region. The director of the film is confident that through this film, he will be able to invite the attention of administration, to provide necessary facilities to this region and pay attention, to protect the women folks in this region, from sexual abuse by the local landlords. The film has also tried to show, how these poor people, revolt against the injustice on them. Now, we only hope that all these politicians, who were present for this function, also watch this film and take necessary steps, to stop these attrocities on women, in such regions.
‘Campus Katta’ offers formula of traditional entertainment
Rating: ★★ ½
Studio / Presenter: Sharp Eye Production Producers: Prathamesh Gadwe Writer, Director: Sanjeev Kolte Cinematographyer: Jitendra Acharekar Music: Pravin Kuwar Cast: Santosh Juvekar, Namrata Gaikwad, Sheetal Dabholkar, Vikram Gokhale, Milind Shinde, Arun Nalawade, Swati Chitnis, Kishori Shahane, Rahul Dongre Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
Come election time and it’s the time for the youth of Maharashtra to come forward and fight corruption by Politicians in the society. This seems to be the motive of some of the film makers today. And, director Sanjiv Kolte is nowhere behind, in presenting such a timely subject through his latest released Marathi film ‘Campus Katta’. Set on the backdrop of a college at a district place of Maharashtra, owned by the politicians Annansaheb Gunthe Patil (Arun Nalwade) and Kolse Patil (Milind Shinde). The ultimate aim of these two politicians is to make quick money, through donations for admissions, through the few educational institutes owned by them, making profits in catering services and selling the extra land meant for recreation purpose. But, they face stiff opposition from College student’s leader Raja Shinde (Santosh Juvekar), who prefers to remain in the same college for years, fighting corruption at administrative level in the college.
Being a dynamic leader, Raja has his own followers from the college, who are always there for staging demonstrations every time, when ever there is a need to pressurise the management. He has a well wisher girl friend Rasika (Sheetal Dabholkar), who also poses as a journalist for a TV channel, besides being member of his college katta. In comes Sakhi (Namrata Gaikwad), daughter of new college principal Kochrekar (Vikram Gokhale); who also becomes a great admirer of Raja Shinde, watching his fight against injustice. As the time progresses, we see the love blossoming between Raja and Sakhi, disappointing Rasika, who is also close to Raja’s mother. But, like a good friend, she accepts Raja’s decision and remains by his side, like a loyal friend.
Raja’s methodology is not acceptable to the new principal, who feels that he is nothing but a hot headed irresponsible leader with no future. But, looking at the way the trustees putting pressure on college management, he later realises the presence of Raja in dealing with such corrupt people. But, in the process, he has to sacrifice the life of his own daughter, who marries Raja; but cannot make him happy. So, it’s a happy end after a tragic turn, in the concluding part of the film.
Instead of presenting a strong conflict, the film has just remained representative about the different characters; be it the protagonist Raja, the two corrupt selfish politicians, a straight forward college principal, a typical young villain, a so called name sake female journalist and the team of forty loyal students, always with Raja.
Except for the character of Santosh Juvekar and Vikram Gokhale, there is no force noticed in the other characters. The confrontation of Sakhi with her parents for siding Raja, sounds very unnatural, than being realistic in the screenplay. The two politicians played by Arun Nalawade and Milind Shinde are neither funny nor terrifying. Even the new villain – Rahul Dongre playing their right hand to counter Raja, looks very unimpressive, with the kind of weak role entrusted to him.
The two girls Namrata Gaikwad and Sheetal Dabholkar are just namesake, though they have few songs to their share. It is Santosh Juvekar, who dominates, throughout the film. There are other characters like Raja’s mother played by Kishori Shahane, Sakhi’s mother played by Swati Chitnis and others around. But, they have very less to their share, except for being part of emotion filled scenes. The film has failed to define the roles of certain characters, like the one who is always with Raja and whom Rasika calls ‘Sir’. Even, it is not clear, what exactly Rasika does? If she is a student of the college, what way, she is associated with a TV channel? A freelancer or a full time journalist?
Barring these lapses, the film still manages to present the subject of united fight of the youth against the corrupt education system, in director Sanjiv Kolte’s style; using lot of emotional content in this otherwise action filled film. There is good scope for music by Pravin Kunwar, using the songs at festive occasions. As a result, the film appears as an ordinary formula entertainer, filled with emotions.
‘Vanshavel’ sends across a timely social message to the society
Rating: ★★★ ½
Studio: Archit films Producer: Sunil D Mankar Director: Rajeev Patil Story: Damodar N Mankar Screenplay: Rajeev Patil, Datta Patil Music: Amit Raj Camera: Amalendu Chaudhary Cast: Ankush Chaudhary, Kishor Kadam, Sushant Shelar, Shantanu Gangane, Namrata Gaikwad, Manisha Kelkar, Vidya Karandikar, Niwas More Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
The issue of Female feticide has been discussed in few Marathi films in the recent past. The most recent was through the film ‘Mokala Shwaas’. But, now late Rajiv Patil has presented the same issue in his own way, to send across a strong message to the society. It is very unfortunate that the talented film maker, who gave some sensible films like ‘Sanai Choughade’, ‘Jogwa’ and ‘Pangira'; passed away little before the release of this last offering in the form of ‘Vanshavel’.
The film revolves around a powerful person from a village Mr. Dadasaheb Deshmukh ( Kishore kadam) who is very dominant . His word is always final. Dadasaheb runs his own hospital, besides involving himself with other social activities. His elder son Nilesh ( Sushant Shelar) who is a doctor, manages the hospital and is married to Priyanka-a housewife( Manisha kelkar). His second son Anil ( Shantanu Gangane) who is into farming business, is newly married to a Gynaecologist Sayali ( Namrata Gaikwad). Dadasaheb, being male dominant, expects to have a grandson in the family, as early as possible .
The problem begins when his first daughter in law- Priyanka, refuses to abort her child; when she comes to know that she is going to deliver girl child. The second daughter in law – Sayali also joins the family hospital to take up some responsibilities; but, that only brings trouble for Dadasaheb and his elder son Dr.Nilesh, who is into unlawful activity. The family faces more problems, after Priyanka leaves the house, leaving Nilesh to repent on some of his past acts. With the arrival of new Police Inspector ( Ankush Chaudhary) in his area, invites more trouble for Dadasaheb.
In spite of all these problems, Dadadsaheb tries to manage everything. But, time comes, when his entire family desert him , including his wife Savitri ( Vidya karanjikar),leaving him in the company of his most trusted attendant- Maauli. The director gives few twists to the screenplay, only to teach a lesson to Dadasaheb, who finally reunites with his family, with a changed heart.
As a director, late Rajiv Patil has shown his strength in presenting the subject very effectively, using the hospital as backdrop of the script. Using the two doctors as important characters from the same family, he has clearly shown the reason with difference of opinion. Very cleverly he has shown, how a dominant head of the family becomes helpless, when all the three women from his own family dare to oppose his ideology.
In the role of Dadasaheb, Kishore kadam stands tall among all the characters. He plays a prominent role in this film, where he has plenty of scope to display his acting skills. And, he has done a wonderful job. The director has exploited his full potential, looking at his ability. In the role of Dr.Nilesh, Sushant Shelar plays his part very well, clearly displaying his diplomacy while following the footsteps of his father. He has also been able to show the quick change through his emotions, after his wife leaves him. In the role of Anil, Shantanu Gangne, a stage and TV actor, finds a better scope in this film. And, he does make his presence felt.
Namrata Gaikwad does get few opportunities to react spontaneously at few emotion filled situations. She too has played her part well, as a responsible gynecologist. Manish Kelkar plays an important character in this film; but she too has limited scope for acting. She, however, finds a song to her share. Vidya karanjikar finds one good scene to counter her dominant husband; but in the role of Police Inspector Ankush Choudhary is impressive, as he does everything in his own style.
The film has two songs, which have been used at right places. Amit Raj’s music is just fine; but, the background music and sound effects have been used very well at right places, to create the desired impact. Amalendu Chaudhary has ample scope to experiment with his camera; be it outdoor song sequence or indoor horror filled scenes, using minimum lights. Produced by Sunil Mankar and directed by Rajiv Patil, ‘Vanshavel’ is certainly a sensible film, delivering a timely social message.
‘Vijay Aso’ shows the way to eliminate Bad Politicians

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
Many Marathi films have shown in the past, how the shrewd politicians exploit their loyal party workers and when time comes, they expect them to sacrifice even their lives for themselves. In the past, film like ‘Zenda’ showed such characters. Through many Bollywood films, we have seen the politicians finishing off their own loyal workers, after they achieve what they desired for.
New Marathi film ‘Vijay Aso’ shows the loyalty of one such young loyalist party worker Shankar Gawade (Chinmay Mandlekar), who with the help of his supporters is ready to even sacrifice his life for his Boss- the Forest Minister of Maharashtra – Mr. Prakashdada Jadhav (Murali Sharma). Prakashdada is into all illegal trade and is also involved in a scam. The media is exposing him from time to time; but Prakashdada manages to cover up the issues using his influence in ruling party.
When TV Journalist Shrikant Pathak (Ganesh Yadav) exposes Prakashdada, through a sting operation carried out on his Forest department secretary, Shankar dares to slap Shrikant in his office after damaging his office furniture, with the help of his team. In fact, Shankar plays an agent to supply people for different public rallies organized by Politicians. Journalist Shrikant is well aware of that and he also gets a clue about the dirty game planned by Prakashdada , using Shankar’s people to teach a lesson to his party chief , when he gets the news about his removal from the Ministry.
When Shankar’s people are killed in the police firing; during a rally, as per Prakashdada’s plan, Shankar boils in revenge against Prakashdada. At this moment, Shrikant comes to his rescue and saves Shankar’s life. He educates Shankar and advises him to take his revenge in a different manner. The climax of the film is not predictable, as Shankar succeeds in his mission in a different way. The film not only shows the way to eliminate bad politicians; but also makes the loyal workers aware of the moves of their leaders. It also highlights the present situation in the state of Maharashtra, which is full of scams and the dirty games played by politicians to retain their Ministry.
Script of the film is nothing new; but it sends a strong message to the unemployed youngsters; especially the young party workers, who are used by the Politicians. It also shows how a shrewd politician eliminates his own blood relation, when it comes to gaining sympathy to retain his position. Screenplay by Chinmay Mandlekar & Vivek gore is filled with action packed scenes, besides few emotion filled sequences.
In the role of Shankar Gawde, Chinmay Mandlekar perfectly fits into that character, which is developed by himself, through the script. He is the new angry young man of Marathi films, walking on the footsteps of Nana Patekar. Watch him taking the revenge in the climax and you will start believing his ability. Murali Sharma poses a challenge to all those villains in Marathi film industry. After his appearance in ‘Ajintha’ and ‘ Hello Jai Hind!’, he seems to have worked very hard on his diction in marathi. He plays a cunning politician in his own style to impress one and all. Don’t be surprised, if he is nominated as an actor in negative role in forthcoming popular awards.
Namrata Gaikwad has limited scope; but she has played her part well, especially in emotion filled sequences. Ganesh Yadav in the role of a TV journalist does a fine job. Among the supporting cast, Veteran Janardan Parab, versatile Amita Khopkar, Kedar Shinde and other young artistes have played their parts very well. Debutant Amitraj has offered good music on meaningful lyrics by team of Guru Thakur, Sachin Darekar, Rupesh and Ashish. Imran and Faisal Mahadik have done a skillful editing work. Last but not the least, Cinematographer and director Rahul Jadhav in his dual role, has used his creativity in presenting some of the sequences, creating the desired impact. Though this film is based on same old Political theme, the presentation part is good.
