Marathi artistes are making good progress in Hindi web series
During this lock down period, when the release of films, shows of Dramas and shootings of films and TV serials have come to a halt, many home viewers have switched over to web series. And when we go through some of the Hindi web series released on different web channels in the recent past, we find many Marathi artistes in prominent roles.
In the newly released web series ‘Hundred’ on Hotstar Specials , Rinku Rajguru finds a parallel role along with Lara Dutta and the trailer of this series clearly indicates that she has a lead role. There are other two Marathi Actor Hrishikesh Joshi and Rohini Hattangadi who have also found prominent roles. Incidentally, Hrishikesh Joshi was also seen in a prominent role of a police Inspector in another popular web series ‘Breathe’ shown on Amazon Original video.
MX player which presents a web series ‘Ek Thi Begum’ in Hindi as well as Marathi Actress Anuja Sathe in title role, with Santosh Juvekar and others . But, the language of this serial is very rough. On the same channel there is another Hindi and Marathi serial ‘Samantar’ starring Swwapnil Joshi and Nitish Bharadwaj. There is another web channel Voot , which offers an interesting Hindi web series ‘The Raikar Case’ a murder mystery directed by Aditya Sarpotdar , which also stars Atul Kulkarni , Ashwini Bhave, Manva Naik , Lalit Prabhakar, Ajay Purkar and Vaishnavi Kadam in prominent roles along with well known Hindi artistes. But, this serial too has used a rough abusive languages uttered by politicians and members of so called affluent family.
‘Makeup’ and ‘Mhorkya’ to release this Friday
‘Sairat’ fame young actress Rinku Rajguru’s next film ‘Makeup’ and National award winning children’s film ‘Mhorkya’ will be the Friday attraction for coming week. While ‘Makeup’ success will depend upon the popularity of Rinku and the type of character played by her, ‘Mhorkya’ will depend on sensible audience looking for something ‘Out of the box’ from Marathi film industry.
Both the films are debut films of respective directors Amar Deokar who makes his debut as writer director through ‘Mhorkya’, is also debut film of producer and artistes of this film. The film’s artistes Raman Deokar and Yashraj Karhade have also won national awards for acting , besides their film winning best children’s film National award. ‘Makeup’ which has Chinmay Udgirkar in the lead opposite Rinku, is directed by debutant Ganesh Pandit.
Now, it remains to be seen which film will attract the attention of audience at theatre windows?
Neha Kakkar makes her debut as singer in Marathi through ‘Makeup’
Popular singer Neha kakkar has made her debut as a singer in Marathi through forthcoming Marathi film ‘Makeup’ which is due for release on 7th February 2020. Her latest song released in Marathi along with Swapnil Bandodkar is “Kase Nirale He karaar Premache” is actually a Marathi version of Neha kakkar’s popular hit Hindi song “Mile Ho Tum Humko”. Generally, we have been listening to Hindi version of Popular Marathi songs, but now a Marathi version of popular Hindi song will be heard by Marathi music lovers.
Speaking about her experience about this song, Neha kakkar says, “The original song ‘Mile Ho Tum Humko’ is very close to me. My brother Tony Kakkar has produced this song and it received overwhelming response from my fans. Perhaps, for this reason, the Marathi version of this song has been presented through this Marathi film ‘Makeup’. I am very happy that in both the versions my voice is there. Initially, I was having little difficulty in singing this song in Marathi, but lyricist Mangesh Kangne and my director helped me a lot. Till now, I have seen only one Marathi film and that is ‘Sairat‘. Incidentally, this film stars Rinku Rajguru, on whom this song has been pictured.”
Besides Rinku Rajguru and Chinmay Udgirkar in the lead roles, the film also stars Pratiksha Lonkar, Milind Safai, Rajan Tamhane, Sumukhi Pendse, Swati Bovlekar and Tejpal Wagh.
‘Kaagar’ attempts a conventional love story on the backdrop of Power politics
Politics has always been a favourite subject of Marathi films since the time ‘Saamana‘ was released in the 70s. Directed by Jabbar Patel the film skilfully dramatized the conflict of wills between a small-town political racketeer and a morally upright schoolteacher. It had talked shown the power of sugar co-operatives of Maharashtra. Then in 1998, we saw ‘Sarkarnama‘ directed by Shrabani Deodhar on two political rivals. Both ‘Saamana‘ and ‘Sarkarnama‘ became famous for the powerful performances of Dr. Shreeram Lagoo & Nilu Phule (Saamana) & Dilip Prabhavalkar and Yashwant Dutt (Sarkarnama).
Now, writer-director Viju Mane has presented his latest Marathi film ‘Kaagar‘ on the backdrop of a small town Virainagar in Maharashtra, where we find a middle-aged school teacher, with higher connections trying to gain power through his choice of candidate. How he finally succeeds in getting his own young daughter into this political fight for survival, is what the film is all about. To succeed in his mission, Guruji (Shashank Shende) entrusts the most difficult job to his trusted so-called left hand Yuvraj (Shubhankar Tawde) a software Engineer from his small town. Yuvraj agrees to do anything for Guruji, as he trusts him and is also madly in love with his young college going daughter Rani(Rinku Rajguru).
As the sequence of events unfolds, Yuvraj- Rani love story takes a back seat and we find Guruji showing his true colours like a typical filmy villain to fulfill his dream. The film fails to present a strong conflict, due to limited content and lack of well-planned screenplay. As a result, this film has turned out to be neither a well-built love story nor an action-filled political thriller. Though Shashank Shende finds a lead role of a Guruji turned politician, he does not perfectly fit into that kind of canny character. Suhas Palshikar has also been wasted in that limited character of Guruji’s political rival from the same party. His character should have been stronger to show the conflict. Instead, more attention has been paid to Guruji’s changing political games, according to time. Except for one background song, the other song a Qawwali does not go well with the screenplay. Moreover, in the absence of renowned actors, the film fails to capture the attention of the audience.
If the filmmakers thought that using the card of Rinku Rajguru, they would invite all the attention towards the film, their assumption has gone wrong. As an actress, she has been typecast with the same style of dialogue delivery and her typical expressions noticed in ‘Sairat‘. Perhaps, she has her own limitations. In the role of Yuvraj, Shubhankar Tawde is fine but here once again, the protagonist in his character hasn’t been exploited much. In the supporting cast, Vitthal Kale as Bhavdya, Shantanu Gangane as Bhaiyasaaheb and Umesh Jagtap as Police inspector Nikam have offered good support. The work done by location sound recordist and sound engineer has been worth appreciating. All in all, there is something really missing from this love story set with a political backdrop.
Makarand Mane’s third film ‘Kaagar’ to release on 26th April
After winning the National award for the best Marathi film ‘Ringan‘ on debut, last year filmmaker Makarand Mane went on to make another film on youngsters ‘Youngrad‘ to make his presence felt as a director. And now he is all set to release his third Marathi film ‘Kaagar‘ on 26th April 2019. With the return of ‘Sairat‘ fame actress Rinku Rajguru through this film in the lead role, the film has already raised high expectations.
From the trailer of this film, it clearly hints that the film is made on the backdrop of politics and therefore its release is also timed around the elections in Maharashtra when the campaigning by all political parties is in full force all over Maharashtra. Written by Makarand Mane himself, the film also stars Shubhankar Tawde, Shashank Shende, Shantanu Gangane, Vitthal Kale, Bharti Patil in lead roles. The film is produced by Sudhir Kolte, Vikas Hande and is presented by Viacom 18 Pictures.
