Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Known for his Police detection stories, writer Shrikant Sinker had also written in the past a play ‘Aaliya Bhogasi’ based on a team of mentally unstable people in a mental asylum, who only think of their past profession and enact their skills all the time. Producer Mahesh Manjrekar, perhaps got inspired with that play, while projecting his characters through his new film ‘Shahanpan Dega Deva’, which also revolves around 5 such mentally unstable characters( Bharat Jadhav, Siddharth Jadhav, Ankush Choudhary, Vaibhav Mangale & Sanjay Narvekar), who are being treated in his own way at a private Mental asylum by Dr. Subodh ( played by Mahesh himself) , attached to that asylum.

Mr. Manjrekar known for his offerings on sensational subjects, this time thought of moving into comedy and hence selected this performance oriented film with the sole motive of entertaining the audience. Directed jointly by Atul kale and Sudesh Manjrekar, the producer has himself got involved into the screenplay and dialogues in the company of Abhijeet Deshpande and Sanjay Pawar. There is nothing much seriously happening into the screenplay, except for theose mischievous acts by the five characters , which only encourage competition among themselves. It only looked like that the directors had during the pre-interval stage had given complete freedom to them, resulting into overacting by atleast two characters.

Ankush Chaudhari
It was only after interval, it gave an impression that the director duo had taken total control of the film. The happenings in the film clearly indicate that each character had his own share to display talent under a given situation, which was nothing but pose mentally disturbed and perform an act to look more natural in that condition. And, this experiment succeeds only to a certain extent in post interval session comprising of 55 minutes. The film does not pay much attention on the past history of these characters, except for Bharat Jadhav, whose past incidence has been shown for proving him mentally unstable. The total length of film is just nearing two hours, a perfect length, as further extension would have certainly taxed the audience.

‘Shahanpan Dega Deva’ is a male dominated film, as the three girls namely Manva, Kranti and Poorva play just show pieces and have been rightly used in the climax scene as item girls. Manva makes her appearance just at the stroke of interval, while Kranti comes in almost towards the end of the film. Most of the scenes in the film are based on ‘mind act’ done by each character and among them Sanjay Narvekar invites all the attention for his cricket gimmicks that go very well with his body language. His character also springs a surprise in the climax, thus turning him into a real hero.

Watching the performances of other artistes, Bharat Jadhav, Vaibhav Mangale, Ankush Choudhary and Mahesh Manjrekar himself are all within their limits, except for Siddharth, who has been controlled in the second half, avoiding dialogues for him. Kamlakar Satpute, playing the gay Don is just fine; nothing exceptional about his performance, as we have seen such characters on the screen in the past. Since the film has Bollywood flavour, he reminds you of Kulbhushan Kharbanda in ‘Shaan’, but doesn’t look dangerous. Among the three doctors from the asylum playing villains, Kishore Kadam is impressive. Others in the supporting cast have done well, but Santosh Juvekar has been wasted in that ordinary looking side role.

There isn’t much scope for music in the film, except for the so called item number in the climax, where lavani has been performed in a different style. The background music sounded loud pre interval, but has been used well in the later part of the film. Cinematography by Ajit Reddy is good . The film is likely to impress the kind of audience who enjoy watching TV shows like ‘Comedy Circus’ and ‘Fu bai Fu’, as this film is based only on performances to entertain the audience with a given theme.

‘Aatapita’ has a bizarre tale

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Someone has rightly said that there is a fine line between coincidence and fate. Samarth Art Innovative’s new Marathi film ‘Aatapita’ tries to draw this fine line, when Ashutosh (Bharat Jadhav) who dreams of becoming a writer decides to make Nandu (Sanjay Narvekar), the hero of his story. Nandu works in the recovery of loan department of a bank. Writer- director Uttung Shelar who has conceptualized this unusual plot, has however left it to the audience to decide whether the happenings in the film are just a coincidence or it’s the destiny of the person.

‘Aatapita’ is a simple tale in the day to day life of two individuals, presented in a tricky manner to keep the audience on the hold till the climax, when it finally concludes with a surprise. It’s a totally different experience in Marathi films, as such themes are generally observed in Marathi dramas. But, the director has given a better treatment to the plot, using the adaptability of the two excellent actors, who bring liveliness to every scene. Moreover, the dialogues by Prashant Loke, obviously help add a special flavor to the screenplay, which is based mainly on these two characters .

There isn’t much scope for lady members in the film and therefore the so called leading lady Vibhavari (Ashwini Apte) has been included more as a showpiece to play the girl
Bharat Jadhav, Sanjay Narvekar, Aatapita
friend cum would-be of Nandu. It is for this reason, you find her looking different in every scene she is part of. Music too has less scope in this film with three songs placed before interval without any specific purpose. The music director -Sanjeev Kohli therefore through his background music tries to make his presence felt , with the usage of strange sounds, never heard of before and it is very difficult to understand the purpose behind it.

However, based on the overall presentation, ‘Aatapita’ looks more realistic, because it does not deviate from the main plot. There are not many outdoor locations, yet Prasad Bhende captures some best moments through his lenses. With light make-up used on the artistes, he has managed the close-up shots well. The sound quality and editing is satisfactory.

Aatapita Bharat Sanjay

In the film, Ashutosh is shown as an employee of Municipality’s water department, but instead of focusing on his job, the director has paid more attention on his passion for writing. On the other hand, he has shown some strange happenings in the life of Nandu , to support the theme well . There are few fun filled scenes, on the role played by recovery agents and their understandings with the concerned bank’s executive.

Being a character oriented film, both Bharat Jadhav and Sanjay Narvekar have plenty of scope to display their skills at variable situations. Satish Pulekar in his guest appearance offers variety through his limited role. But, it is Girish Salvi, who steals the show. Pradeep kabre is seen after a long time, while many other characters are new faces, but they support well in the cast. ‘Aatapita’ has a bizarre limited tale, but is well presented, to suit the requirements of big screen.

‘Target’ designed for youth audience

Movie Review by: Sandeep

J. K. Movies new marathi film ‘Target’ is an action filled political thriller with a dose of youth angst. The story is about five idle friends Sanjubhai (Sanjay Narvekar) who thinks he is a ‘bhai’, Anky(Ankush Chowdhary) a builder’s son, who is a skirt chaser, Swapnil(Swapnil Joshi) -politician Vishwasrao’s (Vinay Apte’s) son, who is disillusioned with his father, the Home Minister of the state finding no time for his family,Sattar( Siddharth Jadhav)- a meat shop owner’s son with a penchant for the handycam and Paddy (Bhushan Kadu) -a pizza delivery boy.
These boys become friends with three girls played by Kranti Redkar, Tejaswini Pandit and Smita Gondkar after a lot of minor tiffs. Once, they attend a rave party in a farmhouse in a jungle, where a cop (Vivekanand Gore) tries to arrest Swapnil for drugs possession but then all the friends run helter shelter in the jungle and then they see a child sacrifice being performed in the jungle and then chance upon another boy who is kidnapped.
Kranti Redkar

They rescue him but the bad guys are after them and whether they survive in the jungle and get the villains into jail and solve the ‘sacrifice’ mystery is the plot of the film.
The film moves at a brisk speed once the characters are established and the adventures captured in the jungle are really thrilling. Director duo Vivekanand Gore and Rajesh Kolan give the film a kind of ‘LOST’ series look and those umpteen teen campus drive-in movies that were a rage in the US in the 80’S. The political angle is a much repeated track.

The performances by the artistes are good, especially Kranti Redkar and Sanjay Narvekar. Swapnil Joshi plays a serious type of role with conviction. The cinematography by Sandeep Patil is slick, especially the jungle sequences. Cameos by Vinay Apte and Sanjay Mone are impressive. The item number by Manasi Naik was unnecessary. The music by Jeetendra Kulkarni and Abhijeet Kavthalkar is not up-to the mark.

The editor Sarvesh Parab could have used more pace in the first half. In all, the film will appeal to the youth and is good for a lazy evening hangout, when you need the air-conditioned ambience of a multiplex.

‘Be Dune Sade Chaar’- A Funny adult comedy !

Be Dune Sade Char Poster
Rating: na
Presenter: Video Place Production
Producer: Nanubhai Jaisinghani
Director: Girish Mohite
Story: Aniruddha Potdar, Abhay Darvane
Music: Anand Menon, Ajit Parab
Cast: Mohan Joshi, Atul Parchure, Sanjay Narvekar, Vandana Gupte, Sai Tamhankar
Movie Review by: Sandeep Hattangadi

Nanubhai Jaisinghani (Video Palace) is a well known producer in Marathi(VCD’s and DVD’s and his first film production ‘Be Dune Saade Chaar’ is a lavish comedy with great production values.

The film revolves around Anant Kitturkar (Mohan Joshi) who leads a double marital life with two wives and children in two different cities. The first one is Manorama(Vandana Gupte) with daughter Rashmi(Sai Tamhanker) and the other being Anjali (Mugdha Shah) along with son Rahul(Sushant Shelar).
How Anant handles both the families, is a hilarious situation in the film , especially when his son and daughter celebrate their birthday on the same day. Anant’s secret is known only to his good friends played by Sanjay Narvekar and Atul Parchure. And these friends in one tight situation are forced to reveal Anant’s secret , that leads to many funny situations.

The story by Anirudh Potdar and Abhay Dakhne is nothing novel, as films like David Dhawan’s ‘Saajan Chale Sasural’, ‘Gharwali Baharwali’ and the recent Marathi hit film ‘Hay Kay Nay Kay’ find similarity to their plot. It also has shades of Goldie Hawn’s Hollywood hit ‘Deceived’.

Atul Parchure

The film is watch able only because of the creation of funny situations and dialogues. The entire cast performs well, with Mohan Joshi leading the pack. Atul Parchure is hilarious and Sanjay Narvekar is impressive.

It’s a trendsetting film, as Mohan and Atul have sung a song for the first time. The highlight is Resham Tipnis’ sizzling dance number. Director Girish Mohite has handled the comic subject very well. The music by Ajit Parab and Menon(Ishq Ishq ) is tuneful. Technically, the film is first rate and a slickly made like any big budget Hindi film with dazzling cinematography by Santosh Shinde.
See this film, if you like yourself to be entertained by a mindless comedy.

Dialogues: Vivek Apte
Music: Sunil Kaushik
Cast: Ankush Chaudhari, Swapnil Joshi, Sanjay Narvekar, Rahul Mehandale, Vinay Apte, Anand Abhyankar and Sonali khare
Movie Review by: Saurabh Karnik

Amazing cinematography. Awesome editing. Stunning special effects. Hey, I am not stating here specialties of Hollywood, nor I am talking about any latest Bollywood movie! These are major characteristics of our own Marathi movie ‘Checkmate’. Thanks to Sanjay Jadhav and his all team, who gifted such a beautiful movie to audiences.
It is a challenge for any writer to describe the story on paper. The story develops in front of audiences through various small pieces, which are the part of a puzzle. When all the pieces fix at appropriate position, puzzle gets solved and audiences understand complete story with a sudden shock. The story moves around three young guys who were cheated through fake financial scheme. Unfortunately all of them lost all their precious money that they had collected by cheated somebody. Now they come together and make a plan to recover their money.

So the story is all about implementation of the plan and troubles that had been faced while implementation. Everyone treat himself, as the master of the game and thus everyone became just a pawn for other character. But actual master of the game comes forward only at the end of the movie. Of course the remaining story has to be seen on screen itself and I promise all the readers that it is just a thrilling experience to watch it on a big screen. Sanjay Jadhav- one of the best cameraman in the industry has taken a huge risk in his directorial debut to come up with such kind of risky story. One small mistake in presentation could have been destroyed the whole film. But he trusted his own abilities and as a result Marathi Film Industry got such a wonderful movie.

Sanjay Narvekar In Checkmate

Ankush Chaudhari, Swapnil Joshi, Sanjay Narvekar, Rahul Mehandale, Vinay Apte, Anand Abhyankar and Sonali khare are the main star-cast of the movie. None of them our new to us, and everybody has acted impressively. But Swpanil Joshi is the real surprising package for viewers. We have seen him in many hindi and Marathi serials, but none of those gave him a chance to show his real skills. This was his first opportunity had made no mistake. His ‘bolbacchangiri’, facial expressions and even dialog delivery is extremely good. Ankush, Vinay and Sanjay are as good as expected. Sonali doesn’t have much scope in the film.

Swpanil Joshi In Checkmate
As I stated earlier, technical side is the real strength of the movie. Sanjay Jadhav himself handled camera, cinematography, and direction and he did every job perfectly. Sunil Kaushik’s background music adds good essence in the story.

Marthi Film Industry had never faced shortage of good stories or actors. It was the technical part, where it was lacking. With this movie we can surely say that the industry has came over this aspect also. We can surely consider it as a new beginning and if others will also follow Sanjay, golden days of Marathi Film Industry are not long away.
