‘Popat’ delivers social message in a sweet voice
Rating: ★★★ ½
Studio: Mirah Entertainment Producer: Citrus Check Inns Director: Satish Rajwade Story: Chinmay Kelkar Music: Avinash Vishwajeet Cast: Atul Kulkarni, Amey Wagh, Siddharth Menon, Ketan Pawar, Anita Date, Neha Shitole, Megha Ghadge Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
Every film maker has a social responsibility to pass on a message through his film, besides offering entertainment. In the past, film makers like Bhalji Pendharkar, V.Shantaram, Raja Paranjape and many others did it in their own style. Now, young film maker Satish Rajwade joins their group, with his latest offering ‘Popat’.
In today’s time, one really need guts to present such a thought provoking subject, with a commitment to the society. But, Satish has done it very skilfully. No wonder, he is considered one of the talented directors in Marathi film industry today. Incidentally, after doing two films on city lifestyle, this is the first film from Satish, with a village backdrop.
The film revolves around three youngsters Raghu ( Amey wagh), Mukund ( Ketan Pawar) & Bala ( Siddharth Menon) who live in a village Kulpe ( off. Kolhapur) and are best friends. Each one of them possess some skill and it is their common interest in doing something different, binds them together. One day, they decide to make a film on a serious social issue. They catch hold of a videographer Janardan ( Atul kulkarni) from a neighbouring village; who posesses a movie camera. Janardan, who is married to Preeti ( Anita Date), is otherwise a fun loving person and flirts with a tamasha artiste Rakhi ( Megha Ghadge).
When four of them decide to make a film, scripted by Mukund, Janardan agrees to be part of their project, provided he is offered the lead role. He tries to involve Rakhi into the team; but, doesn’t succeed. Finally, he persuades his own wife( who is carrying) to play his real life wife in this film; besides playing a flirt with Bala’s girlfriend Darshana( Neha Shitole), who is convinced to be part of this film. The efforts of the team seem to be working well; but, while shooting the climax of the film, Janardan tries to back out, fearing that the film’s script is his own story. Finally, ‘all is well’ at the end.
Writer – Director Satish Rajwade has successfully delivered a social message through sugar coated screenplay and dialogues penned by Chinmay kelkar; which almost give a feeling that his imaginary ‘Popat’ has used his sweet voice, to deliver this sensible message to create awareness about a social issue. Many important scenes which are filled with humour are captured very well by the director.
The selection of artistes for the respective roles, make a big difference, in terms of clever presentation at every important situation in the film; be it hospitalisation of the tamasha artiste, Mukund’s father not happy with his son’s activities, the youngsters seeking opinion of housewives about their safety and above all Janardan’s emotion filled reaction during the climax of the film.
Atul Kulkarni has once again proved that he does full justice to the author backed roles. Though in this film, he is part of the group, he has certainly made his presence felt throughout the film. In the roles of three close friends, Ketan Pawar, Amey Wagh and Siddharth Menon find equal opportunity to display their talent. But, it is Ketan Pawar ( ‘Shala’ fame) who steals the show, with his humour filled dialogues. Neha Shitole ( ‘Tu Tithe Mee’ Serial fame) finds better scope in this film, after her performance in ‘Deool’. She has played her role confidently.
In the supporting roles, Anita Date and Megha Ghadge find limited scope. Urmila kanitkar does special appearance during a song sequence. Avinash Vishwajeet’s music is satisfying for three songs in the film. Bhaskar Samla’s cinematography is good. Length of the film ( about 150 mins) is little longer than required; hence stretching few scenes little before interval. But, considering the sincere effort to handle a very relevant timely social issue successfully, the film maker deserves a pat on his shoulder. The film should find its entry at many forthcoming film festivals. And who knows? It may win awards too. Efforts should be made to show this film at touring talkies in rural areas; to serve the purpose of making this film.
“‘Popat’ is my first outing with the rural backdrop”- Satish Rajwade
Known for his successful sensible Marathi films like ‘Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai’ & ‘Premachi Goshta’, film maker Satish Rajwade is now all set to release his latest film ‘Popat’ starring Atul Kulkarni, Amey Wagh, Siddharth Menon and Ketan Pawar along with Anita Date, Neha Shitole and Megha Ghadge. To be presented by Mirah Entertainment, the film will be officially released all over Maharashtra on 23rd august 2013.
The first look of this film was shown to the media persons on Tuesday afternoon, clearly indicating that it was an entertaining film. Director Satish Rajwade calls it “an incredible, inspiring, creative and highly entertaining work and can’t find enough words to describe it. “Till Date I have been labelled as a very urban storyteller with city centric subjects. POPAT is my first outing with the rural backdrop and rural dialect. POPAT is targeted towards a wider audience which will keep both the urban and interior Maharashtra interested,” says Rajwade. According to him, POPAT comes purely as creative decision since the subject demanded that kind of innocence and vulnerability.
The screenplay and dialogues of this film are by Chinmay Kelkar and the story by Satish Rajwade. Bhaskar Samala is the director of photography with the music score by Avinash-Vishwajeet. The choreographer is Phulwa Khamkar, editing by Rajesh Rao and make-up by Santosh Gayake. Pallavi Rajwade has designed the costumes and the singers involved are Swapnil Bandodkar, Bela Shende, Prasanajeet and Maithilee Panes Joshi. Umesh Shinde is the executive producer.
‘Premachi Goshta’ defines love beyond relationship

Banner: Mirah Entertainment Pvt. Ltd, Citrus Check Inns Producers: Ihita enterprises Director: Satish Rajwade Music: Avinash, Vishwajeet Cinematography: Suhas Gujrathi Cast: Atul Kulkarni, Sulekha Talwalkar, Sagarika Ghatage, Satish Rajwade, Rohini Hattangadi, Mira Velankar and Rani Gunaji (Guest Appearance) Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
Steve Martin has rightly said, “Relationships end, but they don’t end your life. But people do often spend more time finding out about failed relationships than finding successful ones.” Perhaps, based on this philosophy, writer Chinmay Kelkar and director Satish Rajwade thought of making this new Marathi film ‘Premachi Goshta’. The rising cases of divorce among young middle class Maharashtrian people are on the rise and hence this subject is timely, to make a film.
The story of the film is about two strangers Ram Subramanyam ( Atul Kuklkarni), and Sonal ( Sagarika Ghatge), who happen to meet in a Family court. They start talking to each other after a misunderstanding and later get to know each other . For Ram, it is almost like understanding a woman, after meeting her in the family court.
Ram already has faced a divorce from Ragini( Sulekha Talwalkar) an aspiring model and stage actress, who is more concerned about her career and space. Though Ram is a good husband, Ragini’s over ambitious attitude, results in their divorce. On the other hand, Sonal has two failed marriages and is depressed. She lives with her single friend Meera( Meera Velankar) and desperately searches for a job. When Sonal faces an interview, to assist a script writer in his works, he happens to be Ram. In short, the world is too small for them, to meet once again.
Ram is born to a Maharashtrian mother and a south Indian father, hence Subramayam. But, in the film, he is shown only with his mother ( Rohini Hattangadi), who is more concerned about her son’s future. But, Sonal’s entry into his office, brings lady luck to Ram. Otherwise, believing in stories based on remakes of old hits with little changes here and there; Ram is encouraged by Sonal to write his original stories and it works. Ram also inspires Sonal to contribute something to his story and later gives her a free hand to proceed with the conclusion.
As the characters in their story take the form of A,B,C & D; the actual happenings in their life also take unusual turns, with the return of Ragini and Samit ( Sonal’s ex- husband). This brings a temporary halt to their work on script, with the difference of opinion between Ram and Sonal over conclusion part in the climax. Ram’s close friend Swaraj ( Satish Rajwade) suggests him not to entertain Ragini once again, no matter it was for professional work. Ram’s mother is also not happy with Ram’s professional relations with Ragini, whom she calls a selfish woman.
Director Satish Rajwade has handled this cinematic form of love story with his own creativity. Scenes of Ram and Sonal together in office and Cafe have been shot very well. “Love remains, though relationship ends” is all that he has tried to explain, through this sensible film. After ‘Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai’ this is another good creation from him. Though ‘Mumbai –Pune-Mumbai’ was targeted at youngsters and about making selection of life partners, ‘Premachi Goshta’ goes one step further to show that falling in love with each other is not enough for marriage; but it is understanding each other well, more important for a successful marriage.
In the role of Ram, Atul Kulkarni has played a simple idealistic hero, in search of happy relationship. He has displayed different shades through his performance, while expressing his emotions and conscience. A wonderful actor that he is, Atul has given full justice to his character. Sagarika Ghatge, plays a depressed and agitated woman in the initial stage; but quickly shows happiness through her emotions, while sharing her thoughts with her friend Meera. Sulekha Talwalkar, who has a long experience of playing a career woman in the recent past, has played her part well. Satish Rajwade , Meera Velankar & Ajay Purkar have offered good support, through their performances in equally important characters in this film. It was nice to see Rohini Hattangadi making a comeback into Marathi films, after a long time.
Lyrics of Ashwini Shende are meaningful in the songs played in the background, according to changing situations; on the music of Avinash Vishwajeet. Photography by Suhas Gujarathi is good, while capturing those required emotions of the main characters, in all those important scenes. Presented by Mirah Entertainment Pvt Ltd, ‘Premachi Goshata’ is not a routine love story; but, offers something different, to define love beyond relationship.
“I select my artistes as per the requirement of the role “- Satish Rajwade
With successful Marathi movies like ‘Mrugjal’, ‘Ek Daav Dhobi Pachaad’, ‘Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai’ and ‘Gaiir’ director Satish Rajwade made his presence felt with the creativity offered through these films. His work as a director was also well received through TV serials like ‘Avantika’ and ‘Agnihotra’. Now, we find him directing a new serial ‘Guntata Hriday Hey’ with a different subject on Zee Marathi. This serial is being shown at 10.30 pm; but, that does not matter when Satish Rajwade is directing it.
An actor turned director, who has in the past assisted Govind Nihalani, is today a big name in Marathi TV and film industry. He is known to handle the subject well and his presentation does leave that desired impact on the audience. Marathi Movie World spoke to Satish Rajwade and this is what the young dynamic director has to say:
Q: You are known to be very selective about the subject, before taking up a film. Is it so ?
A: Yes, I am selective about the subject, as it is the script that I should be comfortable with, for presentation.
Q: What are the projects you have in hand today ?
A: I am directing a film ‘Makadachya Haati Champagne’ which is in post production stage and now involved with this new serial of Zee Marathi- ‘Guntata Hriday Hey’.
Q: What is this film ‘Makadachya Haati Champagne’ all about ?
A: This film is based on a popular Marathi play with this title and it will have good humour.
Q: Do you think that Marathi films based on popular dramas do well at the box office ?
A: It is better to make films based on good quality dramas, in absence of good scripts.
Q: As a director how do you get the work done from your actors, especially those who are new ?
A: I just ask them to behave natural, during the scene.
Q: While selecting the cast of the film or serial, do you make the choice yourself or somebody else does this job?
A: I myself do the selection of the artistes.
Q: But, it is said that you only select the best ones?
A: No, that is not so. I select my artistes as per the requirement of role and the characters they are required to play. A particular artiste should perfectly fit into that role.

A young modern girl dressed in Long Red skirt and white top (Let us call her Ms. Mumbai) moves all alone from Mumbai to Pune just to select her would be, on the request of her Mother. After passing from one junction to other searching for the address, she finally lands at the destination point, where some boys are playing gully cricket. She selects none other than the batsman (Let us call him Mr. Pune) to know exact location of the house; and as a result of which he is clean bowled. The young man (Dressed in Bermuda shorts, an overcoat and sports shoes) however directs her to the location but to her surprise, the door is locked. Ms. Mumbai is unable to contact the concerned person, as her cell phone battery is down. So, she proceeds to a grocery shop, only to call her friend and inform about the non availability of the person. Here again, Ms. Mumbai and Mr. Pune meet for the second time.
Their general argument to show each other’s attachment for their native, brings them together, when Mr. Pune offers courtesy to Ms. Mumbai by taking her for a ride during the day time, as the girl has a return ticket for an evening train and wants to pass her time. Together, they visit places like Saras Baug, Dagduseth Ganapati temple, crowded Tulshi baug and Sinhagad. They share their experiences about their past love affairs, but do not reveal each others name. Finally, Mr. Pune drops Ms. Mumbai at Pune station and both say good bye to each other. While she waits for her train, she receives a call on her cell phone, (which suddenly starts functioning) from the boy from Pune, whom she had actually come to see. But, when she comes out to meet him at the gate, as agreed, she finds Mr. Pune, still struggling to kick his scooter. Needless to say that Mr. Pune is none other than her would be. In the climax shot the girl is shown running to catch her train back to Mumbai, giving some indication to the boy about her approval.
Director Satish Rajwade directs this unusual love story in his own style trying to keep the audience engaged with arguments and counter arguments between the two characters. Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai, is more like an audio delight ( through timely dialogues) than visual impact, as you only notice the two characters in the same dress for about 100 minutes, except for the song-cum-dream sequence for 5 minutes, when they are seen in some designer costumes. It is only few outdoor locations of Pune darshan that brings in some change, but otherwise you see two of them just perform and express their emotions, while making their point. There isn’t much scope for music, but other technical areas have been handled well.
Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai(MPM), is thus an experiment to attempt something different. Such experiments are only acceptable in Marathi cinema. Precisely, MPM is a performance driven and communication based film with both Swapnil Joshi and Mukta Barve coming out with realistic performances. Except for few junior artistes, there are no other characters in the film. Targeted mainly at the young audience from Mumbai and Pune, the film does succeed in inviting the attention of elders besides the youngsters. But, this movie is certainly not for school going kids, as they are sure to feel sleepy or become restless during that total 106 minutes journey. For others, it is a light entertainer, for a change.
‘Gaiir’ is a well presented movie
Rating: 3/5
Presenter: Sanjay Ghodawat Groups Production: Kruti Films Director: Satish Rajwade Story- Screenplay: Parag Kulkarni, Shirish Rajwade Cast: Sandeep Kulkarni, Ankush Chaudhary, Amruta Khanvilkar, Tejaswini Pandit, Uday Tikekar, Vidyadhar Joshi, Ila Bhate, Amita Khopkar, Sandeep Pathak, Mahesh Joshi Movie Review by: Saurabh Karnik |
Ferrari, Lexis, Chopper, lavish sets, and stunning outdoor locations… hey, I am not talking about any big budget Hindi film. These are some of the specific characteristics of latest Marathi movie – ‘Gaiir’. But still these are not the most attractive features, which would make the audiences appreciate this movie. There is a tight script, mind-boggling dialog, dazzling acting, excellent camera and technical work that makes the movie presentable . In short, it’s a perfect movie not just because of its big budget but also because of dedication and efforts put in by cast and crew of the movie.
As indicated in the promos it is a suspense thriller movie. Sameer Shroff (Sandeep Kulkarni) is a corporate giant. Smart, young, good looking and dashing personality. He marries an NRI’s daughter – Neha (Amrtuta Khanwilkar). Just like other newly married couples, they have a dream of pleasant future ahead. Suddenly, Neha and some other friends and colleagues of Samir realise that Samir’s duplicate exists in the same city. Samir’s duplicate targets Neha and tries to disturb his personal as well as professional life. Inspector Avinash Sardesai (Ankush Chaudhari) helps Sameer to solve the issue. Finally, movie ends with shocking end, certainly worth watching on the big screen.
The movie has good star cast including Sandeep Kulkarni, Amruta Khanwilkar, Ankush Chaudhari, Ila Bhate, Uday Tikekar and everybody has given superb performance. But still there is only one award for man of the match and it is none other than Sandeep Kulkarni. We had seen him in Shwaas, Dombiwli Fast, Made in China – all movies were based upon some social issues. But the way he has changed his body language, facial expressions, looks to present a legendary businessman, is simply amazing. Ankush’s performance was great as usual but Marathi film industry has got another talented actress in the form of Amruta and she is proving it with her every film. Uday Tikekar, Ila Bhate and Tejaswini Pandit’s performances were pleasant and increased the flavor of the movie. Vandana Gupte and Chinmay Mandlekar’s short but sweet appearances were also pleasing.
What makes a movie great from good is perfect combination of on screen and off screen (technical) performance and Gair is an ideal example of it. Parag Kulkarni has written a fantastic story, Satish Rajvade has given golden touch with good screenplay and Satish and Parag have made it even better with hard hitting dialogs. We have seen Satish’s talent in his previous movie – Ek daav Dhobipachad.. Background music has played major role in enrichment of the movie and due credit has to be given. The movie catches the attraction even with the effective use of background score. Even post production method is beautifully handled. Extra cuts, misbalancing effects are used beautifully. Atul Shidhaye has given useful contribution in styling of the movie. But movie loses it’s hold over audiences for last 5-7 minutes, also the idea of using romantic ‘Hindi’ song in Marathi movie is not acceptable.

Carrying on the tradition of entertaining the audience by tickling their funny bone is the movie ‘Ek Daav dhobi Pachad’
Rating: ★★
Presenter: Zee Talkies Producer: Shree Mangesh Films Director: Satish Rajwade Story: Girish Joshi Camera: Suresh Deshamane Cast: Ashok Saraf, Subodh Bhave, Prasad Oak, Kishori Shahane-veej, Movie Review by: Jitendra More |
Comedy has been an inevitable element of Marathi Cinema since centuries. Carrying on the tradition of entertaining the audience by tickling their funny bone is the movie ‘Ek Daav dhobi Pachad’
Produced by Ashok Saraf and presented by Zee Talkies, the movie revolves around the life of Dada Dandke (Ashok Saraf), a crook whose business involves controlling and opening new beer bars and casinos. The so-called gunda of the village, he is fondly called as dada by his associates. Dada is notoriously known for capturing polling booths and doing vasooli from people. However, a transformation comes about in his life when he meets his long lost love, Hema (Asawari Joshi-Saraf). Dada puts a marriage proposal which Hema rejects saying that he is not the same person she had met years back. She comments on his language, clothes and way of living.
Unable to face the rejection, Dada decides to change himself and win Hema’s heart again. His attempts to improve make him appoint a Marathi teacher for his language, a fashion designer to stitch international and help all the loved ones in trouble. His journey to be a good man in Hema’s eyes, keeps his enemies wonder that he is planning to come up a new plan this time.
Saraf, as an authoritarian father and a man of honour suits the role well. However, his unreasonable comedy does not go with his image. Again keeping the image of a good actor intact is Subodh Bhave as the Marathi
teacher. Seeing Bhave into a sober role after the brutal role in Uladhaal is amazing and Bhave has made the transformation well. Pushkar Shrotri as Babya, the right hand man of Dada seems to be wasted and so are the acting talents of Prasad Oak (Trimbak Joshi), an accountant madly in love and Madhura Velankar (Saylee) as his lady love. Mukta Barve as Dada’s daughter in her role as Sulochana gets on the nerves of the audience.
With such a huge star cast, directed by Satish Rajwade has not been able to give justice to even one character. However, even after losing the plot of the movie, he comes out good in the end. Music by the two greats Ajay-Atul suits the theme of the movie, however, the audience would have expected a few more songs to keep with the mood of the movie. Nivedita Joshi-Saraf makes a good screen presence even after so many years.
A good movie overall but certainly not reaching the heights set by movies that have brought about a metamorphosis of Marathi movie industry.
