Urmila Kanitkar-Kothare to play Vithabai Narayangaonkar
There was a time when Tamasha Empress Vithabai Narayangaonkar ruled over the hearts of tamasha lovers in Maharashtra. Vithabai was responsible in getting government and public recognition for ‘Tamasha‘ the folk art of Maharashtra, thereby becoming the first female artist to win the president’s award for this art. However, in spite of earning immense popularity, prestige, honour and money, she had only faced disappointments during the last stages of her life.
Now, to bring the extraordinary life of the Vithabai Narayangaonkar, to the general public, a film ‘Vitha‘ based on her life, will soon hit the screens. Namrata Entertainment Pvt. Ltd, in collaboration with another film production company Aapla Picture has produced this film. Recently, the film’s shooting was completed and now the technical and post production work is in progress. The film ‘Vitha‘ is directed by Pundalik Dhumal.
Popular talented actress Urmila Kanitkar-Kothare, plays the title role of Vithabai Narayangaonkar, while Upendra Limaye will be playing a very important role. The screenplay and dialogues of ‘Vitha‘ are written by Pundalik Dhumal and Shantanu Rode. Sanjay Jadhav and Devendra Golatkar are the cinematographers, while art director is Mahesh Salgaonkar and music is by Ajit Parab, Sameer Mhatre and Rohit Nagbhide. The film will be released during the coming new year.
Colors- Marathi offers inspiring tales of legends
Marathi television plays a very important role in educating the audience and at the same time offering subjects to inspire them, besides offering entertainment. There are some serials, which are based on mythology, but they are prolonged , taking away the interest of the audience. However, the new serial on Colors Marathi, suitably titled ‘Awaaz-Itihasatlya Soneri Panacha‘, which began on 27th June 2016 has already completed two chapters, covering the biopic of two legends namely ‘Sant Dnyaneshwar‘ and ‘Mahatma Jyotiba Phule‘ the legends in history of Maharashtra. It was a pleasure to watch the performances of Saurabh Gokhale and Prasad Oak, portraying the roles of Sant Dnyaneshwar and Mahatma Jyotiba Phule .
After covering the important events in their lives in about eight episodes each, now they have started the chapter of Rani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore, whose reign in central India lasted for about 30 years. Ahilyabai was a very able ruler and a perfect organizer and was highly respected person. Therefore, it will be interesting to watch her story on small screen, through this serial. It is also interesting to watch Urmila Kanetkar Kothare playing her character, after returning to small screen almost after 5 years.
Is Adinath Kothare following his father’s footsteps
Mahesh Kothare began his acting career as a child artiste. He acted in both Marathi as well as Hindi films. He directed his first Marathi film ‘Dhumdhadaka‘ , when he was 31 years old. This is what his son Adinath is doing today. Incidentally, like his father, Adinath too has performed as a child artiste. He too acted in Hindi as well as Marathi films. After acting in films, Adinath who is now 31 years old, is all set to direct his debut Marathi film‘Paani’ and the work on the script of this film is presently going on.
So, can we say that Adinath is following his father’s footsteps ? For the past one year, Adinath has toured many drought affected places in Maharashtra, to study the situation. At some of the places, he also saw some watershed management projects and was inspired to make a film on this subject. At present his project is in the pipeline and the details will be finalized soon.

‘Guru’ projects Ankush Choudhari as the new Superman of Marathi films
Rating: ★★★ ½

In Bollywood and South Indian action films, we have seen many stories of Superman, who fights against the evil doers to give justice to the people, suffering from harassment. Eros International and director Sanjay Jadhav have presented one such Superman, in the form of ‘Guru’, played by Ankush Choudhari. So, in this film, the character of Guru is not a very clean and principled youth; but he is into all wrong illegal business of thefts and targeting all those, who are also into wrong business. But, he is kind hearted and serves food to all those, in need of it.
One day, Guru, becomes witness to a murder, when he hides in an under construction building, to give a slip to police. But, he lands into trouble as the CID officer , who is close to a big builder ( Ravindra Mankani) , who commits this murder; wants to trap Guru in this case. So, Guru leaves the city and takes shelter at his brother’s ( Avinash Narkar) place in his village. But, here, he discovers atrocities on the villagers and his brother, by a local MLA Mansing ( Murli Sharma) , who has made their lives miserable, using his muscle power. At this stage Guru turns a Superman for the villagers, lifting and tossing dozens of Mansing’s fighters in the air and bashing them against the walls. At the same time, he doesn’t forget to carry forward his love story with charming young Ovi ( Urmila kanitkar Kothare), daughter of temple priest, who lives in the same village.
When Mansing plays his dirty game of cheating the villagers, by asking them to surrender their lands, for the development of village, into a mega City, Guru thwarts his plans , with the help of Ovi, by uniting the villagers .Finally, when he stages an agitation, by blocking the road, the media comes into picture, exposing the plan of Mansing, thus showing victory of truth over evil. Sanjay Jadhav as the director of this film, has done a lot of hard work, to keep the tempo of the film, going with some interesting happenings till interval. But, in the post interval session, which is a revenge story, slows down a bit and becomes predictable with the villain striking again and again, even after Guru teaches him a lesson. He even manages the protest sequences of the villagers , very well; but he has stretched the concluding scene, in a typical 60s and 70s style of Hindi films.
However, the film scores on account of good performances by stylish Ankush Choudhari, lively Urmila Kanitkar Kothare, witty but cruel Murli Sharma, principled Avinash Narkar, caring Sneha Raikar , dangerous Ravindra Mankani and few others. Moreover, instead of presenting a passtime story for such a masala film with action and entertainment , director Sanjay Jadhav has taken up a timely issue, faced by many villages in Maharashtra; very skilfully through this film, which is also to be appreciated. Good music by Amitraj & Pankaj Padgham , excellent choreography of Umesh Jadhav , suitable costume designs by Harshada Khanvilkar, artistic art design by Satish Chipkar, Ashwini Kocharekar and appropriate use of visual effects by Prasad Sutar are also the plus points of this so called masala film.
‘Guru‘ may appeal to all those, who enjoyed watching the films like, ‘Lai Bhari’, ‘Singham’ and ‘Dabangg’. In short, it has offered a complete recipe of entertainment, in a South Indian and Bollywood film style. Last but not the least, Ankush Choudhari will be called the new superman of Marathi films, after release of this film.

Urmila’s fine performance makes ‘Kaakan’ appealing
Genres: Romantic
Censor: U
Duration: 122 Min.
Studio/presenter: Mangorange Productions, Krishnaraaj Films
Producer: Hridaya Banerjee
Director: Kranti Redkar
Writer: Kranti Redkar
Dialogues: Kranti Redkar, Omkar Datt
Cast: Urmila Kanetkar-Kothare, Jitendra Joshi, Madhavi Juvekar, Ashok Shinde, Ashutosh Gaikwad, Aakash Banerjee
Urmila Kanitkar Kothare is one such actress, whose real potential is noticed, if she is offered a good emotion filled role. We have already noticed her skills, through an award winning film ‘Mala Aai Vhaychay‘ and popular TV serial ‘Asambhav’, few years ago. Now, she finds a lifetime role, in Kranti Redkar’s film ‘Kaakan‘ And, Urmila has portrayed the lead character of Sudhamati, by pouring her heart into this role. Making her entry in the 24th minute of the film, she holds the attention of the audience till the last scene, so much has been the impact of her role. And the credit goes to Kranti Redkar, who has made her selection for this role, while making her debut as a director, through this film.
Set on the backdrop of a village in Sindhudurg district of Konkan, the film narrates a tragic and intense love story of Kishu (Jitendra Joshi) and Sudhamati (Urmila kanitkar Kothare). The film begins with a little 12 year old boy Gopi (Ashutosh Gaikwad), noticing a lonely and sick old man, near the sea shore of his village. Initially, mistaking him to be lunatic, he tries to tease him along with his friends. But, when he is saved by old Kishu, from drowning, he shows sympathy towards him. Gopi finds out Kishu’s past and discovers that his beloved Sudhamati got married to a businessman Mr. Kamat from Mumbai.
Gopi goes out of his way, to make Kishu happy and runs away from his house, in search of Sudhamati in Mumbai. Things aren’t easy for him. But, he meets a hard working young boy Wasim (Aakash Banerjee) , who has his own story. Wasim who is a helper at a tea stall, offers shelter to Gopi and also helps him to locate the address of Sudhamati. It is the meeting between Gopi and Sudhamati, that brings Sudhamati back to her village, after almost 32 years, for a yearly festival. The climax of the film is very touchy, but predictable.
Kranti Redkar on her debut as a director, has made a good attempt. But, there are few lapses in the film’s screenplay, which are clearly noticed. How can a poor Kishu, who cannot even pay Rs. 5 to a visiting Doctor, can afford to prepare a thick designer Gold bangle for his beloved? Don’t exactly know the reason, to show Sudhamati with her tanned skin after 32 years, when she was shown fair enough, in her early 20s ? Also, the second half of the film has been stretched a little longer, than the first half.
To say something about the direction, Kranti Redkar has expertly narrated the story, with the present happenings, using flashback to show the love story of a girl from rich family and boy from poor family. She has also tried to show the after effect of a train blast by the terrorists, through the character of Wasim, a hard working tea boy, working at a tea stall.
Wonderful performance by Urmila kanitkar Kothare makes ‘Kaakan’ appealing. Very cleverly, she has used the Malavani accent, to suit her character, when she is shown young. She certainly deserves an award for the same. Urmila gets good support from Child actor Ashutosh Gaikwad, who has proved his acting ability through this film. Watch her scene with him, when he comes to meet her in her office in Mumbai. Jitendra Joshi doesn’t have much scope in the film, as most of the time, he is shown in isolation, without any dialogues and with his face covered by long hair and beard.
Excellent camera work ,meaningful lyrics and fine music are the plus points of this film. Good support comes from character artistes Madhavi Juvekar and Ashok Shinde. If you love to watch tragic love stories and good performances, ‘Kaakan‘ is just your choice.
