Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Western culture has a lot of influence on our today’s youngsters. And, film maker & writer Sachin Kundalkar has lot to say on this, through his latest released Marathi film ‘Rajwade & Sons’, which presents three generations of a high profile joint business family, from Pune. Set on the backdrop of this historical city, which is known for preserving the traditional Maharashtrian culture, we find Ramesh Rajwade( Satish Alekar) , managing his family’s customary Goldsmith business very well, with the help of his two sons( Vidyadhar( Sachin Khedekar), Shubhankar ( Atul Kulkarni) and son in law Vaibhav( Rahul Mehendale). Vaibhav ,who is married to Rajwade’s daughter Laxmi ( Mrunal Kulkarni) , lives with the Rajwade family.

Ramesh Rajwade is a disciplined man and wants every member of the family to follow the set of rules. Now, let’s introduce other members of the family. Sushila Rajwade ( Jyoti Subhash) is the wife of this head of the family. Sarita( Purnima Manohar) is the wife of Vidyadhar and the couple has two children, Anay ( Alok Rajwade) and Shweta( Krutika Deo). Laxmi & Vaibhav also have two children, Virajas( Siddharth Menon) & Ananya( Mrunmayee Godbole), while Shubhankar, who is a widower, has only a teenager daughter  Tanmaya(Suhani Dhadphale), the youngest member of the family. And, how can we forget to introduce the pet dog Bubble Gum?

Atul Kulkarni, Rajwade and Sons

So, with this big team of a joint family, we see the happening of a big drama, after the sudden arrival of  the missing member of the family- handsome Vikram (Amitriyan Patil) . And, it is Vikram who brings in the desired change, required in the family, playing a perfect balance, between the older  and younger generation.

The film actually talks about the mind set  of each member of the family. And, therefore it may relate to ,many such people from the well to do joint families. All that the film maker has to convey through his film, is a message for all those parents, not to block their children’s wish, if they want to  pursue a particular career. But, All said and done through the film’s screenplay, it certainly makes you think, as to how the film would relate to middle class and lower middle class families? Anyway, the intention of the film maker being good, it is to be appreciated that he has attempted something different in Marathi films. He has certainly created that atmosphere of a rich family, clearly showing, how the young generation thinks differently, unlike their parents and grandparents, when it comes to fulfilling their dreams. The makers of this film, have cleverly endorsed many products through this film.

Director Sachin Kundalkar has lot more to convey, through some interesting happenings in the lives of almost all the family members, excluding the grandparents and Vidyadhar, who is the most obedient elder son of Rajwade family. There are lot many references to different places in Pune and hence Punekars may relate more closely with this film. Wonderful performances of all the artistes, makes this film more effective. In the role of Vikram, Amitriyan Patil adds that special flavour to this film. One fails to understand, as to why he was not used in the publicity campaign of the film? Perhaps, they wanted to surprise all.

The film has very good music and background music to suit the requirement of the subject. Arjun Sorte’s cinematography, wonderful art direction and effective sound designing, are the other assets of the film.

Will Atul Kulkarni give a surprise through ‘Rajwade and Sons’

Atul Kulkarni, Rajwade and SonsEvery actor has an ambition to produce his own film. And, Atul Kulkarni is no exception. Being from a business family in Solapur, Atul is the only member of the family, who landed into acting field. Now, he has turned a producer, with his production house ‘Kaffe Kamera’ ;which is all set to release their Marathi film Rajwade & Sons’.

The first look of this film is now unveiled and it gives an impression that it is the story of a big joint family from Pune, who are into business.  Obviously, it has to be story of three generations, with their different way of thinking.

Atul himself is performing in this film, which is directed by his Happy Journey director Sachin Kundalkar. Being a family drama, they have opted for the best talent, with Sachin Khedekar,Mrinal Kulkarni, Sattish Alekar, Jyoti Subhash, Rahul Mehendale forming the elder group, with support coming from youngsters like Siddharth Menon, Alok Rajwade, Mrinmayee Godbole, Krutika deo, Pournima Manohar , Amitriyaan Patil,Suhani Dhadphale & others. Story and Screenplay is by Sachin Kundalkar himself, while Y,.M. Deosthalee is co- producer. The film is all set to release on 16th October 2015. So, it remains to be seen, what surprise Atul  has for all of us, through this film.

Now, Atul Kulkarni speaks Arabic…

Happy Journey

Do you want to learn Arabic language? Ask Atul Kulkarni. Recently, the Mr. Perfectionist Marathi actor learned Arabic language, to enable him to render some of the dialogues in this language, in his forthcoming Marathi film ‘Happy Journey’. “La alaime gidar kala malhain an alhain shai majhul ” (No, I am busy right now), and “Aana erja savi telephone ant. Bah salaam” (I will call you, once I am back) are some of the lines he spoke in Arabic on the sets of this film.

Atul is portraying a businessman called Niranjan, who is back from Dubai after spending years in business over there. Niranjan, well versed in Arabic, is in constant touch with his business fraternity and friends there and converses with his Dubai pals in the language over phone. These scenes of Atul talking in fluent Arabic have been shot for ‘Happy Journey’.

Speaking about his encounter with the language during the shooting, the National Award Winner star said, “I spent hours in learning the language as I wanted perfect diction and scene coming live, and for this purpose took help of Shamim Sayyed, an Arabic language expert.

“Whenever I got time, I listened to the dialogue and rehearsed for the scene. The dialogue has about 10 to 12 sentences in Arabic language. The mannerisms of the language, accurate diction, style of talking the language, were the factors I focused on. Sayyedji helped me a lot in this effort,” Atul added.

The film is produced by Everest Entertainment led by Sanjay Chhabria. The film, directed by Sachin Kundalkar, has noted Marathi actress Priya Bapat and Pallavi Subhash in lead roles. Many youngsters from various fields of technology are associated with the film. It has helped the production in getting a fresh look to the film. State-of-the-art production design, music and costume designs are set to be unique features of the film. This has created a buzz about the film, not only in the industry but among the cine-goers too. The film is set to release in next few months.

Atul Kulkarni

Atul Kulkarni – a disciplined actor

He does not have any bad habits like smoking or drinking. He is very regular in maintaining his daily exercise schedule and eating habits at the appropriate time. An early lunch and early dinner, with a good sound sleep; has kept him going in today’s changing lifestyle. We have never seen him sitting idle. If he is all alone at public places like promotional events of his film or while attending press shows, you will find him either talking to someone, on his cell phone or reading or replying text messages.

Atul Kulkarni, Actor, PictureMarathi Movie world met this disciplined actor on two occasions during the past month. First, it was during the music release of his recently released film ‘Popat’ and later during the press show of the same film at famous studious. On both the occasions, he was occupied with discussions with the scribes, talking about this film. Indeed, Atul has given his best through this film, playing a typical fun loving videographer from a village. Knowing the strength of the role, he has tried to bring in that sudden change of his behaviour, after he realises that the character he plays in the video film, is very close to his real life character.

Otherwise, very selective about the roles offered to him, Atul having agreed to play the role of ‘happy go lucky’ – Janardan in ‘Popat'; itself indicated that the film was offering something different. When we asked him to comment on this, he openly admitted that the script of this film had appealed to him. One does not know the commercial success of this film; but, Atul certainly became part of the timely message on ‘social awareness’ delivered by the film maker through this film, in national interest . And, Atul seemed to be happy about it.

When asked about his other ongoing assignments, he frankly stated that he had no other assignments in hand, besides the TV show ‘Savdhaan Mumbai’ which was being aired on Life OK channel every Saturday and Sunday at 8 pm. “This show began from 10th August and I am doing 16 episodes as a narrator of this Police investigative serial based on crime detection. I really enjoyed, being part of this programme.” he said.

Having already performed opposite bigwigs like Amitabh Bachchan in ‘Khaki’, Kamal Hasan in ‘Hey Ram’, Tabu in ‘Chandani Bar’ , Aamir khan in ‘Rang De Basanti’ ; he has already bagged the National Awards for the best supporting actor for the films ‘Hey Ram’ and ‘Chandni Bar’, which itself speaks about his ability to deliver his best through any given role, which of course is of his choice. The length of the role doesn’t seem to matter to him much. This has become clear, through his role in ‘Khaki'; that too in presence of well known artistes like Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Tanuja, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and others around.

Atul’s next Bollywood film ‘Zanjeer’, is all set to release soon. In this film, he plays the character of Jaydev. This being the debut film of South star Ram Charan, (son of Telugu superstar Chhiranjeevi), opposite popular Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra, has raised lot of expectations. Atul has already been part of more than dozen of south films. To him, language of the film does not matter. It’s all in the body language and spontaneity, at any given situation. And, he is good at that.

‘Popat’ delivers social message in a sweet voice

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Every film maker has a social responsibility to pass on a message through his film, besides offering entertainment. In the past, film makers like Bhalji Pendharkar, V.Shantaram, Raja Paranjape and many others did it in their own style. Now, young film maker Satish Rajwade joins their group, with his latest offering ‘Popat’.

In today’s time, one really need guts to present such a thought provoking subject, with a commitment to the society. But, Satish has done it very skilfully. No wonder, he is considered one of the talented directors in Marathi film industry today. Incidentally, after doing two films on city lifestyle, this is the first film from Satish, with a village backdrop.

The film revolves around three youngsters Raghu ( Amey wagh), Mukund ( Ketan Pawar) & Bala ( Siddharth Menon) who live in a village Kulpe ( off. Kolhapur) and are best friends. Each one of them possess some skill and it is their common interest in doing something different, binds them together. One day, they decide to make a film on a serious social issue. They catch hold of a videographer Janardan ( Atul kulkarni) from a neighbouring village; who posesses a movie camera. Janardan, who is married to Preeti ( Anita Date), is otherwise a fun loving person and flirts with a tamasha artiste Rakhi ( Megha Ghadge).

Popat Movie

When four of them decide to make a film, scripted by Mukund, Janardan agrees to be part of their project, provided he is offered the lead role. He tries to involve Rakhi into the team; but, doesn’t succeed. Finally, he persuades his own wife( who is carrying) to play his real life wife in this film; besides playing a flirt with Bala’s girlfriend Darshana( Neha Shitole), who is convinced to be part of this film. The efforts of the team seem to be working well; but, while shooting the climax of the film, Janardan tries to back out, fearing that the film’s script is his own story. Finally, ‘all is well’ at the end.

Writer – Director Satish Rajwade has successfully delivered a social message through sugar coated screenplay and dialogues penned by Chinmay kelkar; which almost give a feeling that his imaginary ‘Popat’ has used his sweet voice, to deliver this sensible message to create awareness about a social issue. Many important scenes which are filled with humour are captured very well by the director.

The selection of artistes for the respective roles, make a big difference, in terms of clever presentation at every important situation in the film; be it hospitalisation of the tamasha artiste, Mukund’s father not happy with his son’s activities, the youngsters seeking opinion of housewives about their safety and above all Janardan’s emotion filled reaction during the climax of the film.

Atul Kulkarni has once again proved that he does full justice to the author backed roles. Though in this film, he is part of the group, he has certainly made his presence felt throughout the film. In the roles of three close friends, Ketan Pawar, Amey Wagh and Siddharth Menon find equal opportunity to display their talent. But, it is Ketan Pawar ( ‘Shala’ fame) who steals the show, with his humour filled dialogues. Neha Shitole ( ‘Tu Tithe Mee’ Serial fame) finds better scope in this film, after her performance in ‘Deool’. She has played her role confidently.

In the supporting roles, Anita Date and Megha Ghadge find limited scope. Urmila kanitkar does special appearance during a song sequence. Avinash Vishwajeet’s music is satisfying for three songs in the film. Bhaskar Samla’s cinematography is good. Length of the film ( about 150 mins) is little longer than required; hence stretching few scenes little before interval. But, considering the sincere effort to handle a very relevant timely social issue successfully, the film maker deserves a pat on his shoulder. The film should find its entry at many forthcoming film festivals. And who knows? It may win awards too. Efforts should be made to show this film at touring talkies in rural areas; to serve the purpose of making this film.

Atul Kulkarni

Atul Kulkarni – An actor par excellence

The more you write about actor Atul Kulkarni is less. In Marathi, Hindi and South Indian films, he has performed with total conviction. Watch his commitment in ‘Natarang’ and at the same time playing one of the protagonists in Aamir Khan’s hit film ‘Rang De Basanti’. He invites all the attention, while on screen, as a passionate performer. This itself is his identity as an actor. With his intense acting skills, he has won the hearts of not only people all over Maharashtra but all parts of India.

Atul KulkarniBorn in Belgaum, Atul completed his secondary education from Haribhai Deokaran High School, Solapur, Maharashtra. His father, a businessman, had then settled in Solapur. He joined for electrical engineering at College of Engineering Pune. But, due to lack of interest in Engineering, he returned back to Solapur and joined D. A. V. College, to complete his graduation in English literature. Atul later married theatre actress Geetanjali Kulkarni, whom he met at National School of Drama, Delhi. Not many people are aware that Atul made his film debut through Kannada film ‘Bhoomi Geetha’ in 1997 and has also acted in many south Indian language films.

Atul Kulkarni ActorAtul Won Best Supporting Actor award in Kamal Hasan’s film ‘Hey Ram’ in the year 2000 followed by another best supporting actor’s award in 2002 for Madhur Bhadarkar’s film ‘Chandani Bar’. This brought him name and fame, which was so necessary to enable him to select the roles suited to him. After ‘Satta’ in 2003, we have seen at least 2 to 3 films of Atul released every year in different languages like Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, kannada and Malyalam , besides Marathi. And, his forthcoming film will be ‘Singularity’ in English.

Very few actors from Marathi films have managed to establish themselves in Bollywood and Atul is the latest addition to that list. Last time, while speaking to Marathi Movie World, he had said that Film scripts were more important to him than the language of the film. “I have never accepted any random film offers, just for the sake of being a regular face in the film industry,” he said.

In short, Atul is more concerned about Quality than quantity. Just watch him in that wonderful act in ‘Rang De Basanti’ where he tries to explain that the emotions of a character arise from the heart and one does not have to rehearse for such scenes. His role of an investigative Journalist in Madhur Bhandarkar’s ‘Page 3’ shows his personal efforts in preparing for such a role. To present Guna kagalkar inhit Marathi film ‘Natarang’ ,he must have worked very hard, with the required body language, in the second half of the film. The director can bring out the best from the actor, provided the actor also gives his 100%. And, Atul is the kind of an actor, who always gives his 100%.

When Atul was selected to play as lead hero opposite Sagarika Ghatge and that too in a Marathi film which dealt with post marriage love, many people raised their eyebrows. But, after watching ‘Premachi Goshta’, Atul has removed all the doubts. His portrayal of the character of Ram Subramanyam, a script writer by profession, is very convincing. Very sensitively, he has got involved into his character, which is clearly noticed through all those close up scenes in the film. His expressions during that last scene before interval, speaks everything about his capacity as an actor.

Atul was very much there physically to find out the reactions of media representatives, after the press show of the film two days before the film’s release. And, he was all smiles, to welcome each one of them. He could spot the satisfaction on the faces of all those coming out, after watching his film. This showed his confidence as an actor. There is much more, to come from this brilliant actor, in years to come. After all, he is an actor par excellence .

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Steve Martin has rightly said, “Relationships end, but they don’t end your life. But people do often spend more time finding out about failed relationships than finding successful ones.” Perhaps, based on this philosophy, writer Chinmay Kelkar and director Satish Rajwade thought of making this new Marathi film ‘Premachi Goshta’. The rising cases of divorce among young middle class Maharashtrian people are on the rise and hence this subject is timely, to make a film.

The story of the film is about two strangers Ram Subramanyam ( Atul Kuklkarni), and Sonal ( Sagarika Ghatge), who happen to meet in a Family court. They start talking to each other after a misunderstanding and later get to know each other . For Ram, it is almost like understanding a woman, after meeting her in the family court.

Ram already has faced a divorce from Ragini( Sulekha Talwalkar) an aspiring model and stage actress, who is more concerned about her career and space. Though Ram is a good husband, Ragini’s over ambitious attitude, results in their divorce. On the other hand, Sonal has two failed marriages and is depressed. She lives with her single friend Meera( Meera Velankar) and desperately searches for a job. When Sonal faces an interview, to assist a script writer in his works, he happens to be Ram. In short, the world is too small for them, to meet once again.

Premachi Goshta

Ram is born to a Maharashtrian mother and a south Indian father, hence Subramayam. But, in the film, he is shown only with his mother ( Rohini Hattangadi), who is more concerned about her son’s future. But, Sonal’s entry into his office, brings lady luck to Ram. Otherwise, believing in stories based on remakes of old hits with little changes here and there; Ram is encouraged by Sonal to write his original stories and it works. Ram also inspires Sonal to contribute something to his story and later gives her a free hand to proceed with the conclusion.

As the characters in their story take the form of A,B,C & D; the actual happenings in their life also take unusual turns, with the return of Ragini and Samit ( Sonal’s ex- husband). This brings a temporary halt to their work on script, with the difference of opinion between Ram and Sonal over conclusion part in the climax. Ram’s close friend Swaraj ( Satish Rajwade) suggests him not to entertain Ragini once again, no matter it was for professional work. Ram’s mother is also not happy with Ram’s professional relations with Ragini, whom she calls a selfish woman.

Director Satish Rajwade has handled this cinematic form of love story with his own creativity. Scenes of Ram and Sonal together in office and Cafe have been shot very well. “Love remains, though relationship ends” is all that he has tried to explain, through this sensible film. After ‘Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai’ this is another good creation from him. Though ‘Mumbai –Pune-Mumbai’ was targeted at youngsters and about making selection of life partners, ‘Premachi Goshta’ goes one step further to show that falling in love with each other is not enough for marriage; but it is understanding each other well, more important for a successful marriage.

In the role of Ram, Atul Kulkarni has played a simple idealistic hero, in search of happy relationship. He has displayed different shades through his performance, while expressing his emotions and conscience. A wonderful actor that he is, Atul has given full justice to his character. Sagarika Ghatge, plays a depressed and agitated woman in the initial stage; but quickly shows happiness through her emotions, while sharing her thoughts with her friend Meera. Sulekha Talwalkar, who has a long experience of playing a career woman in the recent past, has played her part well. Satish Rajwade , Meera Velankar & Ajay Purkar have offered good support, through their performances in equally important characters in this film. It was nice to see Rohini Hattangadi making a comeback into Marathi films, after a long time.

Lyrics of Ashwini Shende are meaningful in the songs played in the background, according to changing situations; on the music of Avinash Vishwajeet. Photography by Suhas Gujarathi is good, while capturing those required emotions of the main characters, in all those important scenes. Presented by Mirah Entertainment Pvt Ltd, ‘Premachi Goshata’ is not a routine love story; but, offers something different, to define love beyond relationship.

SUKHAANT- A debatable but touching story

Sukhaant
Rating: na
Producer: Anuya Mhaiskar.
Director: Sanjay Surkar
Camera: Harish Joshi
Writer: Kiran Yadnopavit
Editor: Manav Datta, Vishwas Dhabolkar
Cast: Atul Kulkarni, Jyoti Chandekar, Kavita Lad Medhekar, Tushar Dalvi…
Movie Review by:  Sadeep

Producer Anuya Mhaiskar’s ‘Sukhaant” directed by veteran Sanjay Surkar discusses the serious topic of euthanasia i.e. mercy killing. The approval of the lawmakers has still not been received for mercy killing but this film poignantly supports the concept of mercy killing.

Pratap Gunje (Atul Kulkarni) is a lawyer from a well to do family living with his wife (Kavita Lad Medhekar) and son. In a freak accident Pratap’s mother Sitabai Gunje(Jyoti Chandekar) gets injured and her hands and legs are paralyzed . No hopes for revival makes Sitabai an angry and frustrated lady who
wants an easy death to relieve her of a life of a vegetable though her son and family take good care of her. But the old lady doesn’t wan t to burden herself on anyone and asks her lawyer son to file a petition for mercy killing, a plea which is refused by the courts. But Pratap can’t bear his mothers pain and kills her with great remorse and surrenders himself to the police.

Sukhaant

The climax is very bold and the more conservatives like the doctor played by Tushar Dalvi feel that mercy killing is agreeable
to the heart and not the mind and that we shouldn’t play God and try to treat the patients as far as possible.

The film though a tad serious is made watchable by the lead performers especially Jyoti Chandekar and Atul Kulkarni who excel in the ‘breakdown’ scene in the climax. Both Kavita Lad Medhekar and Tushar Dalvi are impressive. The rest of the cast supports well.

The music by Ashok Patki offers few good tunes. The film has been written well by Kiran Yadnopavit. The DOP has done his job well and the lighting effect especially in the courtroom scenes and during the traffic sequence, where Atul gathers his thoughts is well captured. The sound provided in the background is amazing. Director Sanjay Surkar is a master at handling such subjects and does his job well. The producer Anuya Mhaiskar should be lauded for backing such a serious subject instead of opting for routine comedy or gross songs. In all, a thought provoking film, certainly a worth watch.
