‘Kanha’ does another ‘Morya’ with change of guards

It seems that film maker Avadhoot Gupte has taken the patent of making Marathi films, with Govinda and Ganapati festival background. Earlier, we saw him doing a film ‘Morya‘, which was set on the backdrop of community festivals like Janmashtami and Ganapati, which are very popular fests in Mumbai and in some parts of Maharashtra.
In ‘Morya‘ we saw the fight for power between two groups led by Chinmay Mandlekar and Santosh Juvekar. But, in Avadhoot’s latest film ‘Kanha‘ produced by Pratap Sarnaik and presented by Zee Studios, he has opted for youngsters like Vaibhav Tatwawdi and Gashmeer Mahajani, representing two rival groups. When it comes to forming human pyramids with maximum heights during Govinda festival, they compete with each other.
Actually, the film has tried to voice the concern of hundreds of such Govinda groups, who have been prevented from crossing the height of pyramids more than 20 feet or and not crossing five layers and not permitting children below 18 years of age to take part, while breaking the dahi handi. The film has also tried to show, how the politicians encourage the Govindas to defy the court orders. So, in this film we see two politicians played by Prasad Oak and Kiran Karmarkar , representing political parties and leaving it to the audience to decide, whom do they represent. It is anybody’s guess.
The problem with this film is that it is not as gripping, as ‘Morya‘. Moreover, handling similar type of subject with interference of politicians in exploiting the sentiments of Govinda teams, fails to generate interest. The screenplay could have been more gripping. Even the music is not very appealing, except for one ‘Zagmag..‘ song. The other songs have the flavor of Avadhoot Gupte’s previous film songs. But, the good thing about this film are the performances of the artistes. Vaibhav Tatwawdi suits well in the role of Malhar Bhosale, displaying his emotional side well, while Gashmeer Mahajani has proved that his selection as angry young man Raghubhai was perfect. But, he hasn’t found much scope for acting, except for the climax, as he is shown under the obligation of aspiring politician Madhubhai played by Kiran Karmarkar . By the way, it is Kiran Karmarkar, who steals the show, with his superb performance in this film. Good support comes from Prasad Oak in the role of a local MLA, Gauri Nalawade as Gym Instructor and friend of Vaibhav and Omprakash Shinde ( Khulta Kali Khulena serial fame), who has played Vaibhav’s close friend and Kiran Mane as Police officer..
The makers of this film have cleverly used this film as a platform to send across a message to the administrators and law makers , voicing their point of view. But, at the same time, they have shown how so many Govindas lose their lives in this adventure sport, after being lured with attractive prizes offered by Politicians. The film ‘Kanha‘ may therefore appeal all those, who enjoy this sport. For others, it is just another Avadhoot Gupte film.

Review
Is ‘Kanha’ a timely film with a social message ?
We are all aware that the music release of Avadhoot Gupte directed film ‘Kanha‘ was held in a big way, in a top south Mumbai hotel, where all renowned personalities from Bollywood and political circle were present. Pratap Sarnaik, who has proved himself as a reputed builder and Politician, is the producer of this film and it was at his request many dignitaries, including the chief minister of Maharashtra were present. This film presented by Zee Studios, is now all set to release on 26th August 2016, coinciding with Janmashtami.
Lead starcast of the film ‘Kanha‘ includes Gashmeer Mahajani, Vaibhav Tatwawdi and Gauri Nalawade. The story of this film is set on the backdrop of popular Govinda celebrations in Mumbai. We are all aware about the popularity of this festival; but in the recent past we saw many political parties coming forward to offer big amount to the winner raising the height of the human pyramid. This resulted in accidental deaths of Govindas participating in this Dahi handi breaking sport. As a result of this, the court had to intervene and restrict the height of human chain Pyramid. But, it remains to be seen, whether the film challenges the court and Police order on the height of the pyramid or sends across a timely message to all the organisers and participants.
‘Kanha’ may open new innings for Kiran Karmarkar
A big banner, proper promotion of the film and distribution of the film through proper channel, helps an actor, who is part of the film. Now, if we talk about talented actor Kiran Karmarkar, he could establish himself on Hindi television and Hindi films, because he was lucky to find a lead role in Ektaa Kapoor’s serial ‘Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki‘ 15 years ago. Thereafter, he has been continuously seen in Hindi serials on different channels. Recently, we saw him playing Anuja Sathe’s father in the Hindi serial ‘Tamanna‘. During the past few years, he has been the favourite of Film maker Prakash Jha, having performed in his films like ‘Rajneeti‘ and ‘Chakravyuh‘ . He is also there in his forthcoming film.
Besides working in Hindi, Kiran has also been performing in Marathi films. Some of his films of the past have been ‘Nishpaap‘, ‘Kshanokshani ‘, ‘Aarohi‘,’Aaghaat‘,’Pune 52‘,’Janiva‘, ‘Bhatukali‘ & ‘Shasan‘. Unfortunately, most if these Marathi films either didn’t do good business or were not promoted properly. But now, Kiran is all set to present himself in a full fledged negative role in Avadhoot Gupte‘s forthcoming film ‘Kanha‘ which will be released on 26th August 2016. The film is produced by well known builder and MLA Pratap Sarnaik and distributed by Zee Studios.
Playing a main villain in this film, Kiran Karmarkar is certainly curious to know, how the Marathi audience and film critics would respond to his role. Marathi Movie World spoke to Kiran, during the grand music release of this film, when many dignitaries from Political field, business and Bollywood industry were present in large number. “Yes, I am overwhelmed with this response. Thanks to Avadhoot Gupte, for selecting me for this role of a main villain. I don’t want to say much about the story, which is on the backdrop of Govinda festival, but I can tell you one thing that the film ends with my end too. I have even done some stunt scenes in this film,” he said.
Pratap Sarnaik makes it big with Grand music launch of ‘Kanha’
In Maharashtra’s Politics Pratap Sarnaik is a known name, being the most popular MLA from Thane. But, on Thursday late evening, it was a big day for him, as many celebrities and his friends in Political field had turned up in large number at Mumbai’s Trident Hotel, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, joining the event of grand music release of Pratap Sarnaik’s own production ‘Kanha’. This Marathi film is set on the backdrop of Mahararshtra’s biggest festival Gokulashtami. And, the film is all set to release on 26th August 2016, coinciding with the festival.
Besides getting the music CD released at the hands of chief minister, Mr. Pratap Sarnaik also took the opportunity to announce his Vihang Construction Group’s association with Godrej Properties, at Thane, in presence of Mr. Adi Godrej, who was personally present at this function. Many dignitaries from political circle like Mr. Praful Patel, Mr. Amar Singh, Mr. Eknath Shinde, Mr. Ramdas Kadam and others along with some IAS & IPS officers of Maharashtra were also present. Among the other dignitaries present were Niranjan Hiranandani, Dilip Vengsarkar, film maker Subhash Ghai, actors Jitendra, Sanjay Khan, Akbar Khan, Javed Jaffrey, Mrunal Kulkarni, Nishikant Kamat, Pallavi Joshi, Pooja Sawant apart from lead artistes of the film Vaibhav Tatwawdi, Gashmeer Mahajani, Gauri Nalavade, Kiran Karmarkar and director Avadhoot Gupte.
Interestingly, they were all invited on the dais, during the music release of the film, at the hands of CM and his wife. ‘Chala Hava Yeu Dya‘ fame Dr. Nilesh Sable and Bhau Kadam entertained the audience with their gimmicks, while Samira Gujar anchored the event, which turned out to be a memorable event. Produced by Pratap Sarnaik, co produced by Joe Rajan, the film ‘Kanha‘ is presented by Zee Studios. Music is by Avadhoot Gupte, while the DOP is Rahul Jadhav.
