“Talent, attitude and PR should go together to attain success”- Magesh Desai

mangesh-desai-interview-image

After the release of latest Marathi film ‘Khel Mandala’, Mangesh Desai has shot into limelight. For the past 17 years, he has been struggling to establish his identity as an actor. Only last year, he established himself as a comedian, through a TV reality show ‘Fu Bai Fu’ on Zee Marathi channel. With rich experience of stage and television, Mangesh did enter Marathi films few years ago, but he was branded as a comedian. Now, the character of Dasu, he played in ‘Khel Mandala’ has made a big difference to a committed actor within him. Marathi Movie World spoke to this talented actor. Excerpts from the interview:

Q: Today, you are a recognized actor; but, when exactly you realized that you could make a career in acting ?
A: Actually, I took this decision, while I was studying in 12th standard. At that time, I had won the Best actor’s award in the preliminary rounds of Purshottam Shield, held in Aurangabad. But, since my father insisted that I should first complete my graduation, I obliged him and came to Mumbai after that to make a career in this field.

Q: Did you struggle those days?
A: Yes, there was struggle initially. But, when you jump into the sea, you have to swim according the flow of water.

Q: For the past how many years you are swimming in this sea; I mean into this profession and how has been the experience?
A: I have completed 17 years in this field; during which period I have performed in 10 Dramas. The most popular was ‘Jaoo bai Joraat’. Thereafter, I did many TV serials, but those which are still fresh in my memory are ‘Political’, ‘Vasudha’, ‘Sanj Savlya‘, ‘Oon Paus’and ‘Avantika‘. Then, it was
‘Fu Bai Fu’, followed by more films. I have done about 42 films since 2004, out of which in 24 films, I have played lead roles. In other films, though I played character roles, they were all important, like the ones played in ‘Huppa Huiyya’ and ‘Topi Ghala Re’.

Q: Tell us something about ‘Khel Mandala’.
A: I started working on this film in 2010. At that time, myself and Viju Mane were doing another film. He felt that instead of comedy, I should perform a serious role. When he decided to make ‘Khel Mandala’, and narrated the script to me; he had no other hero in his mind, besides me. He told me clearly that for 2 and half months I should not be working on any other project and I agreed to it, as I felt that it was the best role offered to me so far. The kind of feedback I received after the release of the film from people was, “It was so natural!”.

Q: What are the projects in hand at present ?
A: At present I am busy working in a film, to which I had committed long back. It’s a political satire. It’s the story revolving around two Village Sarpanch. I am one of them and Resham Tipnis plays the other. There are also other popular stars like Santosh Juvekar & Neha Pendse.

Q: Where are you more comfortable. Playing comedy or serious roles?
A: Playing comedy is difficult. Because, you have to keep in mind several things like perfect timing and not to overdo the act. Even performing serious roles is equally difficult, to ensure that it does not become a melodrama. It is very important to see that the audience is totally engaged into the act performed. I am more comfortable with serious kind of roles.

Q: To enter this profession and then survive here, what you consider the most important ? Talent or Good public relations ?
A: First of all, the most important requirement is talent. But, if you can combine it well with your attitude and PR, it works better. Other important thing is destiny. If, destiny is not in your favour, nothing is possible.

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Script has been the success formula of Marathi films these days. New subjects with universal themes presented by Marathi movies now a days, are appealing not only the audience at the national level but also the world over. Viju Mane’s new Marathi film, ‘Khel Mandala’ can be counted in this category of exemplary films.

The film presents a poor simple villager- Dasu (Mangesh Desai) who comes to Mumbai along with his father(Uday Sabnis), as he feels that the puppet shows performed by his father have become outdated. The father is reluctant, but Dasu convinces him, suggesting that he would do some job, so that the old man could rest during his old age. He finds temporary shelter under a flyover bridge, but is unable to fulfill his father’s dream, as the old man is knocked down by a speeding truck.

Dasu decides to carry forward his father’s puppet shows . One day, he finds a new born baby girl left near his hut , during the riots. Dasu, who is all alone in this world, decides to take care of the child. He soon discovers that the baby girl is not only visually impaired but also dumb and deaf. He names her Bahuli. Already blessed with his father’s art, he uses threads tied to her to communicate with her. As Bahuli grows three year old, Dasu makes her dance like a puppet and earns for their living.

A TV Journalist Anushka (Urmila Kanitkar-Kothare) spots both of them during one such road show and makes a story for her breaking news. Her boyfriend (Santosh Juvekar) who belongs to rival channel, makes a different story out of this news, inviting Human Rights activist for a talk show to indicate that such an act is an exploitation of child, under Child labour act. In the meantime, Anushka discovers Bahuli’s real parents Sheetal & Sangeet (Manasi Salvi & Prasad Oak) and tries to hand over Bahuli to them. But, emotion filled Dasu is reluctant. Anushka tries to persuade him, stating that they would be able to offer treatment to Bahuli.

The film concludes with a tragic end, but it goes on to suggest the realities in human life. As a director Viju Mane has presented the character of Dasu in a sensible manner, showing his journey from a village to Mumbai and willing to do any work and adjust
himself in the so called dream city. He is the perfect choice for this role. His emotions are very cleverly captured by the camera, throughout the movie, especially in the climax. Urmila plays the committed TV News channel Journalist very effectively. At the same time, we witness a clever but cunning reporter in Santosh.

Both, Prasad and Manasi play the married couple efficiently. Manasi has more scope to prove her capacity through few emotion filled scenes, while Prasad plays a selfish husband, who later confesses his misdeed. Uday Sabnis has little to offer, but he has played his part well and so are the efforts put in by Arun kadam, Abhijit Chavan, Kushal Badrike and Priya Marathe – who plays the narrator. Child artiste Ananya plays the role of Bahuli as per director’s expectations. .

There are many touching emotion based scenes in the film; but one fails to understand the scenes, where Dasu falls asleep, holding Bahuli in his arms that too without tying her hands, while it rains and his body getting wet. Also, the dream scene where Dasu imagines Anushka as his companion to take care of Bahuli, does not go well. Barring these two scenes, director Viju Mane, has succeeded in his superb presentation, which certainly takes Marathi Movie to a greater height.

Ashwini Shende, Lyrics, Writer

“Every song has its own identity”- Ashwini Shende

After hearing those mesmerizing title songs of the Marathi serials ‘Kalat Nakalat’, ‘Anubandh’, ‘Kulvadhu’ and ‘Majhiya Priyala Preet Kalena’, one always thought of the lyricist for writing those meaningful words. Obviously, Ashwini Shende who penned those lyrics, gets the credit for making these songs so popular. Some people even downloaded them as caller tunes on their cell phones. Ashwini, however attributes the credit to her parents Chandrashekhar & Medha Shende, who encouraged her towards reading and music during her school days.

Ashwini Shende, Lyrics, WriterHaving studied from Borivali’s Suvidyalaya and Parle’s Sathe College, Ashwini does not forget her teachers, who according to her paid more attention on her artistic talent rather than the percentage of marks scored in the exams. Being passionate about reading, Ashwini could compile her own set of words for incorporating them into meaningful lyrics suited to different situations. For the past three years she has bagged the Best lyricist award from Zee Marathi, making a hat-trick. Marathi Movie World had a chit chat with Ashwini to know more about her field of interest.

Ashwini Shende
Q: Why did you choose this profession and whether this is your full time profession ?
A: Writing is not only my profession but my passion. Without writing ,be it a song, dialogues or any other matter; I just cannot sit quiet. More important is what I am writing rather than for which production house I am writing. Before entering this profession, I used to write poems. In fact, for 3-4 years I worked as a Journalist for ‘Indian Express’ and ‘Loksatta’. When I wrote the dialogues and lyrics for TV serial ‘Kalat Nakalat’ my passion for such writing turned into a profession.

Q: Many of your songs penned for films and TV serials have become very popular. How do you feel about it ?
A: Feeling nice about it. Actually, what I visualize, I try to put it in simple words. The more
simpler are the words, better the chances of the song becoming popular. I avoid using the typical Marathi language used during olden days. When I get the feedback from people that it is because of the simple language, they could understand the song well, I consider it as an achievement.

Q: Which was the first song penned by you ?
A: My first song was for Vaishali Samant’s album on devotional songs but I wrote my first song ‘Abhaas ha..’ for the film ‘Yanda kartavya Aahe’.

Q: How do you look at this Marathi Film Industry? Is there enough scope for a lyricist like you ?
A: Marathi film industry is progressing these days with good quality films being produced. Even music has its own place here. As a lyricist, I have gained a lot from this industry. Besides writing, I never thought of doing anything else here. What Mr. Gulzar has achieved in film industry, I would like to be something close to that, if not to that level. And I am sure Marathi film industry would offer me that scope.

Q: What is your personal opinion on ‘there cannot be a film without songs’ ?
A: Poems, songs are the medium of expressing your emotions through words. I don’t think that to make a film popular, you need to have songs in it. If you look at the sad song in ‘Iraada Pakka’ and Khel Mandala in ‘Natarang’, you will notice that the story moves ahead through these songs. The wordings in it has the power to turn the audience emotional. I would love to write such lyrics. I am of the opinion that there should be songs in a film only with the demand of the situation. Take for example a film like ‘Shwaas’, which turned out to be a very good film, without songs.

Q: Is there any interference, after your song is finalized?
A: Once the song goes to the Music director, our authority ends. Now, if some of the words do not fit into the beats, the changes are required and those changes could be of a word or one line also. But, every song has its own identity and it should reach the audience is only our concern.

Q: Tell us something about a memorable moment in your life.
A: When I sit for writing and then complete the same, every moment spent during that period is memorable for me. Even if I have done title songs for 10 serials, the one for 11th serial is given the same importance, as if it was my first song. The force with which I deliver it, it should reach with the same force to the audience.

Q: Till now, for how many films and Tv serials you have written the lyrics?
A: May be title songs for 30-35 serials and 15-20 songs for films.

Q: What are your future projects?
A: I am writing songs for films ‘Partner’ and ‘Manya the Wonder Boy’, which are important project for me. Besides that I am busy writing title songs for few more serials. Some albums are there in the pipeline. I am also writing songs for Chandrakant Kulkarni’s drama ‘Ashi hi 20-30′ which is something new for me.
