Actress Saiyami Kher who made a stellar debut with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s ‘Mirzya’ in Bollywood, is a sportswoman by heart. The multi- talented actress who has been hugely appreciated for her performance in her latest released Marathi film,  ‘Mauli’, had successfully completed a full marathon two years ago and she is prepping up again putting her running shoes on.

“Sport has been my passion ever since I was a kid. I took to running 3 years ago. Ran the full marathon (42 kms) 2 years ago and have done a whole lot of half’s. Best thing about running is you just need to put on your shoes and run. So even if I’m shooting or working late I try getting a 30 min run in my day.” says Saiyami.

“Now, Just a month away from race day I take care of what I should eat this month and start tapering my runs closer to the race. I’m happy seeing the running culture grow in India and urge more and more people to take it up.” she adds.

‘Mauli’ offers entertainment filled with lot of action

Action with entertainment has always been the formula of most of successful Bollywood film makers like Prakash Mehra, Manmohan Desai and Subhash Ghai between 70s and 90s. Thereafter the Bollywood saw a change with some new themes supported by technology. On the contrary our Marathi film industry saw the traditional comedy changing into good subject based sensible films. But, 4 years ago Riteish Deshmukh who made his debut in Marathi, brought the old Bollywood formula of action combined with lost and found drama into Marathi, through his film ‘Lai Bhari‘. And, it worked well, as the young audience in particular, liked his action filled fights of the hero with bad men and also his style of dialogue delivery.

Mauli Marathi Film
Siddharth Jadhav, Jitendra Joshi, Riteish Deshmukh & Saiyami Kher Marathi Film ‘Mauli’

Now, Riteish Deshmukh has attempted one more such formula film packed with action and entertainment in the form of ‘Mauli’. Since this is not a sequel of ‘Lai Bhari‘ you can call this ‘Mauli‘ a distant cousin of Mauli of ‘Lai Bhari‘. This new Mauli ( Riteish Deshmukh) also has his past filled with lot of emotion filled happenings during his childhood, shown in flashback with some scenes picturised on his mother in distress played by actress Girija Oak. That’s how we get introduced to film’s protagonist Mauli a Police Inspector with 6 years of service and having seen 3 transfers. After landing as in charge of a small village in Maharashtra, he comes across a toughest mafia of land, distillery and water tankers- Nana Londhe ( Jitendra Joshi) whose men beat him up during their first meeting. But, soon we find a lot of change within him, with the encouragement received from his lady love from the village Renuka ( Saiyami kher) and a tea vendor Siddharth Jadhav. Time comes when he takes on all those gang members of Nana one by one to establish himself as the new hero of the village.

This is a limited story, but director Aditya Sarpotdar known for his successful films like ‘Classmates‘ and ‘Faster Fene‘ has tried his best to present a formula based action film well suited to his hero Riteish who has tried to offer some variety through his performance . ‘Mauli‘ is totally male dominated film with more fight scenes filled with violence, leaving less time for director Aditya Sarpotdar. Same is the case with lead actress Saiyami Kher, finds limited scenes to display her acting skills. She is however given some importance in the climax. She seems to be a perfect choice for that role. Siddharth Jadhav also finds restricted scenes though he tries to bring in some humour into this film. Among the character artistes Shrikant Yadav, Usha Naik & Girija Oak find some scope to display their skills. Genelia D’souza makes guest appearance in a ‘Holi‘ song as expected, but this time Riteish has not invited any Bollywood stars in guest appearance.

Technically it is a well made film, with good cinematography by Amalendu Choudhary . Drone cameras have been used very well to capture aerial photography. Special effects are almost on par with any big budget Bollywood film. Ajay Atul’s music is good but not as impressive as his previous hit films. Repeated slow motion scenes, predictable happenings (except for one twist before interval), are the few drawbacks of this film. If you keep your logical thinking aside, especially while watching those fight scenes, ‘Mauli‘ offers entertainment filled with lot of action for 2 hours 16 mins.

Saiyami Kher took lessons of rural language from Siddharth Jadhav

Saiyami Kher who made her grand debut in Bollywood with the lead role in the film ‘Marziyaan‘ is now also making her debut in Marathi with the lead role opposite Riteish Deshmukh in the forthcoming Marathi film ‘Mauli‘. Trailer of this film is out now and Saiyami invites all the attention. But, not many are aware about the efforts taken by Saiyami to play this role.

Saiyami who is Maharashtrian can speak Marathi well, but in this film she had to speak rural Marathi language. Therefore, she worked hard to learn the particular dialect suited for her character. Siddharth Jadhav who is also playing an important role in this film, came to her help and Saiyami took lessons from him, whenever she found time on the sets, to get that perfect dialect. And this can be noticed in the film’s trailer. Like her grand debut in Hindi, saiyami wants to ensure that her entry into Marathi should also be in a grand way and we wish her all the best.

Deepa Pardasany and Ashish Chowdhry

As an actor Ashish Chowdhry has experienced television and cinema. But now, joining hands with his close family friend Deepa Pardasany the duo have flagged off their new venture Hindustan Talkies. Incidentally, their production start off with Marathi film ‘Mauli‘ starring Riteish Deshmukh under the banner of Jio Studios. Incidentally, Rohit has acted with Riteish in the films ‘Dhamal‘ and ‘Double Dhamal‘ in the past. Before entering this production, both Ashish and Deepa had decided to create and support content-driven regional and commercial cinema.

We are willing to back new writers as long as we feel they have a strong content. Also, the opening of online platform necessitates a gap to be filled. We will take our vision across platforms and regions,” says Deepa. While Ashish has to say, “At Hindustan Talkies, we are looking to invest in strong scripts. Both Deepa and I share a driven desire to make striking stories. Hence, when the opportunity came to co-produce with Riteish Deshmukh and Jio, it fit our vision perfectly. Also, it’s a delight to team up with market leaders like Mumbai Film Company and Jio Studios.”

In short, both of them have big plans for future. Hope their debut film achieves grand success.

Movie Review by: Jitendra R More

Known for his films on social issues like, Politicians exploiting their party workers, the politics behind community festivals and inspiring Marathi youth to start business in other states; Avadhoot Gupte hasn’t offered much , through his latest film ‘Ek Taraa’. As a story writer, lyricist, singer and above all, the director of this film, Avadhoot dosen’t seem to have paid attention on restricting the length of the film. The only plus point of the film is its music, which offers variety.
Alandi seems to be the new destination for the lead characters of our Marathi films. So, in ‘Ek Taara’ we find another ‘Mauli’, who is not a protagonist, but a singer. The story of ‘Ek Taraa’ revolves around this local singer Dnyaneshwar Lokhande , who is popularly known as ‘Mauli'( Santosh Juvekar). Mauli sings devotional songs in his village, to carry forward the legacy of his father ( Mangesh Desai).
The film begins with an All India Music contest, with Mauli as one of the finalists. From there, the film goes into flashback, where we see Mauli preparing himself to take part in a reality singing contest in Mumbai. During the final round, we find his fiancée Chatura( Urmila Nimbalkar) and close friend Vithu( Sagar Karande) also joining him, to boost his morale. Undoubtedly, Mauli wins this contest and carries home a big booty .

Ek Taraa Moviestill
Mauli marries Chatura and comes back to Mumbai. He signs a big contract with a channel, through a foreign returned E.P. of that channel Urja( Tejaswini Pandit). The business tactics of this channel are exposed in the film. Mauli also slips and falls into the trap of ‘wine and woman’. He frequently insults his wife and close friend and dares to share the bed with Urja in his own house. Both Chatura and Vithu after facing humiliation, return to their village.
In the post interval session, we see the film trailing , with Mauli falling into the trap of underworld. The director has not justified the behavior of two important characters of Mauli and Urja. How can a person with proper upbringing, change all of a sudden, to sleep with another woman, by asking his wife to sleep in a guest room ? How can he join the underworld group ? Also, how can a well educated big executive stoop so low, as noticed through some of her acts ? The concluding scenes in the film, are done hurriedly , i.e. to conclude with Mauli’s reunion with his family, after few years and his little son Omkar (Abhedya Gupte ) also acquiring singing talent. At the end of the film, we even see a complete devotional song picturised on him.
Santosh Juvekar has done a good job playing different shades, through his character. He finds good support coming from his co star Tejaswini, but, their chemistry doesn’t work well, as throughout the film, the audience develop a soft corner towards Chatura, who finds a better role this time in Marathi, after her debut through a cameo ‘Dum Dum Diga ..’. few years ago. Popular small screen comedian Sagar karande, finds a good role, to express his emotions well. Others in the cast, like Producer Raees Lashkaria as the channel head, Sunil Tawde as village Sarpanch, Amol Gupte as underworld Don and few others are just fine. Amalendu Chaudhari’s cinematography and Avadhoot Gupte’s music are the only plus points of this film, besides good performances by the artistes.
