Movie Review by:
Ulhas Shirke

Shooting of a film, in a film,  is not new to Marathi cinema. In the past we have seen this happen in the film ‘Pipani’ and very recently, we saw it happen in the film Mungala. Now, film maker Milind Arun Kavade has presented one such theme, through his latest released Marathi film ‘Shinma’. Produced by Aanil Joshi, the film presents the shooting of a film, at a village in Maharashtra in drought affected district.

Director K.Vasu( Ajinkya Deo) , whose real name is Keshav Vasudev Bhosale, takes up a commercial project, with the help of his production manager( Vijay Patkar) , only to raise money for his wife’s ( Nisha Parulekar) operation; who is in coma, after meeting with a road accident. To please the  producer couple Mr. & Mrs. Ganda ( Yatin Karyekar and Kishori Shahane), they plan to make a remake of ‘Sholay’ in Marathi. Accordingly, they move to a village location, which is already facing water scarcity problem, due to drought in that region. But, with the support of a social worker Navin( Ganesh Yadav) and Sarpanch of the village (Digambar Naik) they begin the shooting of their film, with all their important characters played by Jai(Ashish Pawar), Veeru(Arun kadam), Basanti(Gurleen Chopra) and others.

But, soon at the request of social activist Navin and his sister ( Sanskruti Balgude)they agree to‘In-film branding’ into their film, to highlight the water scarcity problem in the village, in spite of the help assured by the Government. So, besides the humor filled happenings noticed during the shooting, we also find K.Vasu’s assistant director ( Saurabh Gokhale) and Navin Sister’s (Sanskruti  Balgude) love affair progressing side by side, on the outskirts of  the village. After watching all the incidents,  that we see happen in the film industry, over the issues arising out of delay in shooting and threats issued by artistes , finally we see a surprise in the climax.

The film has a very big team of artistes, including film artistes and the villagers and therefore, except for the character of film director played by Ajinkya Deo, there is limited scope to all others. In the film, we notice two lengthy scenes of Ajinkya Deo, trying to converse with his wife lying in Coma in the hospital, over phone. But, they have not even shown the ailing mother of  actress Gurleen Chopra, whose is also undergoing treatment in hospital. More than the film artistes Gurleen Chopra, Ashish Pawar & Arun kadam shown in this film, there is more scope given to the so called production manager played by Vijay Patkar and the so called producer Ganda, played by Yatin karyekar.  The latter has also  been given scenes, flirting  with the actress Gurleen in swimming pool, perhaps to highlight the casting couch mentality in the film industry.

All the artistes selected in the film, have given their best. But, there is very less scope for Sanskruti Balgude in the film. In comparison, Gurleen Chopra finds better scope and she has played her character very well. In short, her debut in Marathi films, has been good. What is worth praising is that, she has tried to speak most of her dialogues in Marathi, unlike other non Marathi actresses noticed in Marathi films, in the recent past. It is understood that she has herself  dubbed for her own dialogues in Marathi. With her fit and slim looks, this beautiful Punjabi actress has also performed the dance very well, in the company of choreographer Ganesh Acharya.  Music does not appeal much, except for one song; but, Santanio Terezio has impressed with his beautiful cinematography, most of which  has been shot in the outdoors.

All in all, Director Milind Kavade has tried to create awareness about wastage of water by people living in city and Government’s apathy to provide relief to drought affected villages, in spite of sanctioning huge amount for water conservation schemes. In short, he has used this medium of entertainment well, to pass on this social message skillfully , through this film.

nisha-parulekar-interview-image

Nisha Parulekar, the well known Marathi actress has performed with many top stars, in many Marathi serials and films. An Engineering Graduate, she entered the acting field by chance and that too after her marriage, while she was doing a job. It all began with ‘Turtur’, where she played a very small role and then the doors of acting career were opened for her.

Nisha ParulekarNisha was part of recently released films like ‘Baburao la Pakada’, ‘Teen Baika Fajiti Aika,’and ‘Yedyanchi Jatra’. Her new film ‘Aamhi Chamakte Taare’ is all set to release on 28th December 2012. Speaking to Marathi Movie world, on the eve of her film’s release, Nisha recalled all the memorable moments during the shooting of this sensible Marathi film, which revolves around a small boy played by Indrajeet More.

“It is the script of this film and its presentation part, invited my attention before signing this film. I play the mother of this small boy around whom the film’s story revolves, while Prasad plays his father. Unfortunately, we have lost a very passionate actor like Anand Abhyankar, who played the role of Grandfather in this film. In fact, I was associated with Anand Sir, in another project under production .” So, I will be missing him a lot. He was such a wonderful person!” says Nisha, recalling her association with late Anand Abhyankar, who died few days back in an unfortunate car accident..

Nisha has another film ‘Parees’ in the pipeline with Umesh kamat as her co-star. This film is based on scams in educational institutes, due to interference from Politicians. Nisha’s husband in this film plays a protagonist raising his voice against the system and in this fight Nisha stands strongly behind her husband. Though shooting of this film this has completed, the release date hasn’t been announced. But, she is also eagerly awaiting for her film ‘Power’ which is due for release in March 2013. In the meantime, she is looking forward to the success of ‘Aamhi Chamakte Taare’, which she feels, is a wonderful film.

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

The best way to defeat darkness is to display the brighter side of yourself. Latest released Marathi film ‘Aamhi Chamakte Taare’ deals with one such social issue, which is so relevant today, to create awareness in the society. The film revolves around a 4th standard student Sachin( Indrajeet More) , who is adopted by a well to do couple- Sameer and Sonali ( Prasad Oak & Nisha Parulekar). It so happens that five years after their marriage, the happily married couple come to know that Sonali cannot give birth to a child. So, on the advice of a family friend and neighbor, Dr. Vinay( Yogesh Mahajan) who is a Gynecologist, they adopt a few months old child; whose parents have passed away. When this bright boy Sachin, while studying in 4th standard in a good school from Mumbai, faints on two occasions; he is tested +ve for HIV during investigations. The parents hide this reality from the boy and his old grandparents.

The trouble begins when during the annual medical camp in his school, the parents are called by the school principal( Reema Lagoo) to inform the parents, who are already aware of the ailment of Sachin. Though the principal, the class teacher and the School Peon – Ganpat mama are sympathetic towards the child and prefer to remain silent on this issue; the news leaks through other teaching staff. The parents of other children then object to Sachin’s presence in school.

Aamhi Chmakte Taare Still

The little child, who is looking for friends, is then admitted to a special school for such children, where he finds real happiness. Through this school, he takes part in the Inter School Music competition hosted by his previous school; where he wins the hearts of all his old friends, including the Judge of the competition Mr. Sachin Pilgaonkar Mr. Sachin Pilgaonkar. The film’s story which is originally written by Anant Sutar has been expanded by Deepak S Chaudhary on the direction of Editing specialist Prakash Jadhav.

The well presented screenplay of this film, goes on to convey a timely message to the society, to change their outlook towards such HIV affected children. Meaningful lyrics, supported by good music from Shrirang Aras, makes this film musical, besides its thought provoking subject. Child artist Indrajeet More, who plays the role of little Sachin, has played his role remarkably well. Prasad Oak and Nisha Parulekar play perfect understanding parents. Both of them have expressed their emotions clearly, through their spontaneous expressions, with every scene they have faced.

The film is a tribute to Anand Abhyankar, who passed away recently, in an unfortunate car accident. In the role of a concerned and caring grandfather, he has clearly displayed that the Marathi film industry has lost a talented actor. In fact, the very first scene of the film, opens with him. Manasi Magikar supports well as his wife. In the role of Principal, Reema Lagoo does well, while Sneha Raikar, the popular kind hearted Mother and Mother in law of Marathi small screen, plays the role of an encouraging class teacher with ease. In the character of Ganpat mama, the school peon, Bharat Jadhav impresses in all those emotion filled scenes. Others in the supporting cast, including a big team of children, have given natural performances.

Director himself being an editor, the film’s climax has been restricted to minimum time to avoid this otherwise time consuming competition. He has rather focused his attention more on the main subject. The only drawback is one song picturised on the family doctor- friend and his wife in the beginning of the film, which looks inappropriate. Otherwise, the film has succeeded in educating the masses through its sensible subject.
