New Marathi plays are offering quality entertainment
Unlike Marathi films, which need a very good script and music to satisfy the film lovers, our Marathi plays are well accepted by drama lovers not only in major cities of Maharashtra, but also at places like UK and USA. Many a times, we often find the tour dates announced by the Drama production house, to indicate that there will be no shows of the play during that period.
One such play ‘Eka Lagnachi Pudhchi Goshta‘ starring Prashant Damle and Kavid Medhekar and written-directed by Adwait Dadarkar has already announced that they have booking for 19 March 2019 in Manchester, UK. This play which was launched with inaugural show last month has celebrated silver jubilee show and is drawing houseful crowds. One thing is sure that if there are popular artistes and a good subject with nice presentation in a particular play, it receives an overwhelming response everywhere.
There are other plays like ‘Aamchya Hicha Prakaran‘ starring Nikhil Ratnaoparakhi, Bhargavi Chirmule, Nandita Patkar directed by Sachin Goswami and ‘Tila kahi Sangaychay‘ starring Tejashree Pradhan and Astad kale with the direction of Hemant Edalabadkar are also receiving good response from the Marathi drama lovers. There is one more comedy play ‘9 Koti 57 lakh‘ which is also inviting the attention of drama lovers. This play also stars popular artistes like Rajan Bhise, Sulekha Talwalkar, Anand Ingale and others. This play is directed by Vijay kenkre. In short, all these new Marathi plays are offering quality entertainment .

‘Sakhar Khallela Manus’ – A wonderful presentation of a black comedy
Rating: ★★★★
Genres: Comedy Drama Production House: Ekdant Creations Presenter: Prashant Damle Fan Foundation Director: Chandrakant Kulkarni Music: Ashok Patki Writer: Vidyasagar Adhyapak Artist: Prashant Damle, Sankarshan Karhade, Rucha Apte, Shubhangi Gokhale Play Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
Lifestyle ailments are on the rise in India and diabetes is one of them. This so called lifestyle ailment is on the rise day by day with more than 62 million diabetic individuals currently diagnosed with this disease in our country. No wonder, some people call India as the diabetes capital of the world. Perhaps, looking at these figures, writer Vidyasagar Adhyapak thought of a good script for a Marathi drama and that’s how new Marathi play ‘Sakhar Khallela Manus‘ came on the stage. Even otherwise, our Marathi playwrights have always come up with ‘out of the world’ subjects in the past and this timely this play, is one of them.
‘Sakhar Khallela Manus’ presents Vilas Deshpande ( Prashant Damle ) as an Insurance Company Manager, who leaves his secured insurance company job and joins a private insurance company, only for good money. But, in the race of achieving monthly targets, he is always under stress and takes to heavy drinking and smoking during weekly parties. This results in detection of type 2 diabetes, with rise in sugar level in the blood. His wife Madhavi (Shubhangi Gokhale) becomes more stricter about his diet. His only daughter Rucha ( Rucha Apte) asks her boyfriend Omkar ( Sankarshan Karhade) who is a doctor, to visit her house and do the counseling part. But, some misunderstandings disturb Mr. Vilas more.
How, Mr. Vilas manages his diabetes and the fun filled interactions between Vilas and Madhavi, similarly between Vilas – Omkar and Vilas- Rucha have been skillfully presented by director Chandrakant Kulkarni. He has exploited the best out of the lead pair Prashant Damle and Shubhangi Gokhale through all those humour filled situations, throughout the play.
Good support also comes from youngsters Sankarshan Karhade and Rucha Apte . However, it is Prashant Damle who steals the show, with his non stop comedy. His presence in the play from start to finish, has made this play more lively and entertaining. All his scenes with Shubhangi Gokhale receive good appreciation from the audience. Prashant not only receives a rousing welcome from his fans at his entry, but also receives ‘Once More’ applaud for his song in the last scene, which indicates his popularity, as a stage actor.
Pradeep Mulye‘s set design is good with good support coming from music director Ashok Patki. All in all, ‘Sakhar Khallela Manus‘ is a wonderful black sugar coated adult comedy, which should not be missed by Marathi drama lovers.

‘Bho Bho’ offers an action packed detective thriller with an emotional touch
Rating: ★★★★
Genres: Thriller, Drama Censor: U Duration: 110 Min. Studio/presenter: Sumukhesh Films Producer(s): Bharat Gaikwad Director: Bharat Gaikwad Writer: Bharat Gaikwad Music: Parth Bharat Thakkar Cinematographer (DOP): Anil Chandel Cast: Prashant Damle, Subodh Bhave, Sharad Ponkshe, Ashwini Ekbote, Saurabh Gokhale, Sanjay Mone, Kishore Chougule, Anuja Sathe Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
“Dogs do speak, but only those who love them, can understand their language.” Latest released Marathi film ‘Bho Bho‘, produced and directed by Bharat Gaikwad, is the best example to show, how a dog lover private detective, investigates an unusual complicated murder case, where a pet dog is alleged to have murdered his lady owner.
An ex Police Officer Vyankatesh Bhonde ( Prashant Damle) expert in detecting cyber crimes, had to quit his job, because he is traumatized, due to shocking accidental death of his little daughter. To forget his grief, he feeds the street dogs and earns some income, by working as private detective, for an agent PD ( Sanjay Mone). While working on one unusual case connected with an insurance claim made by Prof. Vinayak Bhadarkar ( Subodh Bhave) , he smells something fishy.
When Vyankatesh Bhonde detects this case, in his own style, he first visits Sandy, the pet dog of the family kept under observation in a veterinary hospital. But, he finds him normal. Knowing the behaviour of the dogs well, he can’t believe that Sandy has attacked and killed Ms. Sandhya Bhandarkar ( Anuja Sathe) without any provocation. Bhonde gets totally involved into this case, as he also wants to save the life of Sandy and at the same time keep a close watch on Vinayak Khanolkar, his short tempered younger brother Vikram( Saurabh Gokhale), the Veterinary doctor at animal hospital Dr.Dalvi ( Sharad Ponkshe) & the hospital attendant Tanavade ( Kishore Chougule). And, he gets timely help from Jr. Doctor Neha ( Ketaki Chitale). Initially Bhonde’s disturbed wife( Ashwini Ekbote) is unhappy with his working style, but, later she too supports his mission. Finally, Vyankatesh Bhonde succeeds in solving the case and in the climax, we notice the Police reopening the case for court trial.
Director Bharat Gaikwad has very efficiently handled this entire drama, making it an interesting detective thriller. The choice of Prashant Damle to play the lead role, is perfect. Prashant has given full justice to his role, as this is also his comeback film in lead role after 17 years. In three important close up scenes, he has displayed his emotions very aptly. Through his peculiar dialogue delivery, he generates spontaneous humour on many occasions, be it while dealing with Vinayak, Vikram, Dr.Desai, agent PD, insurance company officials or their lawyers. In short, he has given his best, so as to be reckoned for the best actor’s award. Natural performances also come from Subodh Bhave, Sanjay Mone, Sharad Ponkshe, Ashwini Ekbote, Anuja Sathe, Ketaki Chitale and Saurabh Gokhale. Among them, Saurabh Gokhale makes his presence felt, with his angry young man image. Good support also comes from many other character artistes, through their small but effective roles.
For any detective film, cinematography and background music play a very important role. In ‘Bho Bho‘ we find good work done by Anil Chandel through his excellent camera work and appropriate background music provided by Parth Bharat Thakkar. There are no songs in this 1 hour 50 minute long film, except for one well presented title song towards the end. Good editing work by Mukesh Timori is also another plus point of this film. All in all, ‘Bho Bho‘ is an entertaining suspense filled detective thriller, with an emotional touch. Don’t miss it. It’s a worth watch.
Film maker Bharat Gaikwad feels, Prashant is at his best in ‘Bho Bho’
When a dog bites a man it does not become a news; but when a man bites a dog, it certainly becomes a news. That’s what Journalism is all about. But, what if a Pet dog is alleged of Killing his female owner? This is the one liner of the forthcoming Marathi film ‘Bho Bho‘.
After finalizing the script of his film ‘Bho Bho‘ , film maker Bharat Gaikwad was in search of a suitable actor, to perfectly fit into the role of Detective Vyankatesh Bhonde. But, when his friend suggested him the name of Prashant Damle, he immediately agreed and That’s how Prashant turned Vyankatesh Bhonde .
Recently, the director and two main artistes of this film, found some time together and met the press representatives, to speak about their individual experiences, after the official trailer of the film was unveiled. It was an interesting chat with three of them, which revealed that they had a big team of artistes, mainly from Marathi stage, which had very good understanding with each other, during the course of entire shooting. And, that made the work of director more easier.
Since the film revolves around dogs, was it difficult for Bharat to manage all the permissions? And, Bharat explained, “Initially, I was not aware that so many NOC’s would be required. I had to approach total 3 times separately for acquiring permission from the Protection of Animal Society’s Chennai office. Had to explain them about every scene and only then received those permissions. All locations in my film are new and I am sure, the Marathi film lovers are going to love this film, for its unique subject,” concluded Bharat.
Present on this occasion were Prashant Damle and Sanjay Mone, who are both playing detectives. Actually, it is the character of Sanjay, who engages Vyankatesh Bhonde on an assignment. The other artistes of this film are Subodh Bhave, Sharad Ponkshe, Ashwini Ekbote, Saurabh Gokhale, Anuja Sathe, Kishore Chougule, Rajan Bhise, Shailesh Datar, Madhav Abhyankar, Pradeep Patvardhan, Vandana Vaknis and others, thus making a strong team of all talented stage artistes. The film is all set to release on 22nd April 2016.
