Vijay Chavan Actor
Vijay Chavan, Actor

Renowned Marathi actor known for his comedy roles in Marathi plays and films, is no more. He was 63. He is survived by his wife and son Varad who is also an actor. Vijay Chavan  breathed his last today morning at Fortis Hospital, Mulund, Mumbai, where he was admitted few days ago . He was suffering from ailment for the past few years. Very recently, he was conferred with the prestigious State award for Lifetime Achievement at the Maharashtra State Marathi film awards, at the hands of Chief Minister of Maharashtra Mr. Devendra Fadnavis and in presence of State Cultural Minister  Mr. Vinod Tawde.   On this occasion, he was brought on a wheel chair by his son Varad. But, even in that condition he gave an inspiring speech indicating his willingness to perform more and more roles.

Mr. Chavan had performed in about 350 films, which also included few Hindi films. Most of his roles were comedy roles and what was good about him was that he established his own identity even in presence of top comedians during late 80s and 90s when he won several awards for his performance. Best thing about him was that he continued to perform in films in spite of his illness, inspiring his fans with a message that ‘the show must go on‘.  Vijay Chavan will always be remembered for his superb performance in the hit Marathi play ‘Moruchi Maushi‘ which staged 400 shows. With his passing away, Marathi film industry has lost a very good actor, but he will always be remembered for his variety of roles.

Many veteran artistes like Mahesh Kothare, Ramesh Bhatkar, Sanjay Narvekar who were present for his funeral, paid tributes to their departed friend.  Incidentally, Vijay’s son Varad has also established his identity as an actor in Marathi TV serials and films. And, we are sure he will carry forward the legacy of his father.

Is Adinath Kothare following his father’s footsteps

Mahesh Kothare began his acting career as a child artiste. He acted in both Marathi as well as Hindi films. He directed his first Marathi film ‘Dhumdhadaka‘ , when he was 31 years old. This is what his son Adinath is doing today. Incidentally, like his father, Adinath too has performed as a child artiste. He too acted in Hindi as well as Marathi films. After acting in films, Adinath who is now 31 years old, is all set to direct his debut Marathi film‘Paani’ and the work on the script of this film is presently going on.

So, can we say that Adinath is following his father’s footsteps ? For the past one year, Adinath has toured many drought affected places in Maharashtra, to study the situation. At some of the places, he also saw some watershed management projects and was inspired to make a film on this subject. At present his project is in the pipeline and the details will be finalized soon.

‘Ganapati Bappa Morya’ – Mahesh Kothare’s new offering on Colors Channel

Ganpati Bappa Morya, Marathi Serial, Ganesha
‘Ganpati Bappa Morya’

After achieving success through his Super hit mythological serial ‘Jai Malhar’ on Zee Marathi, Producer director Mahesh Kothare is now all set to offer his next mythological serial ‘Ganapati Bappa Morya’, which will be telecast this time on Colors Marathi channel. This will be much bigger project, cost wise, than the previous serial, as the set cost of this serial has touched around 1.75 Crore. Even otherwise, while offering a serial based on mythology, there is lot of cost on art design, costumes and special effects and the well known film maker, has accepted all these challenges. Having gained a lot of experience through ‘Jai Malhar’, this time, we expect something big from him.

‘Ganapati Bappa Morya’ will be telecast from Tuesday 24th November 2015 at 8.30 pm from Monday to Saturday. Since, this serial is based on mythology ,with more emphasis on Mother –son relationship, it will be interesting to see the events involving Parvati and Ganesha. With women and children likely to shift to this serial, Zee Marathi’s ‘Majhe Pati Soubhagyavati’ will face a tough competition, at prime time 8.30 pm.

Actually, this serial witnesses overacting from Vaibhav Mangle, especially in his original male appearance, in all those scenes of excessive drinking in the company of friends and later abusing others. Even otherwise, Vaibhav Mangle taking his hair dresser for granted, to use her house, for his change over, that too in absence of her husband, looks odd and unconvincing.

Incidentally, Colors have also started an entertaining reality show for housewives, ‘Aamchya Gharaat Suunbai Joraat’, anchored by Harish Dudhade (‘Majhe Mann Tujhe Jhale’ fame). With new team games for housewives, the show is likely to compete with Aadesh Bhauji’s ‘Home Minister’ on Zee Marathi. After dismal show in the initial episodes, their comedy show ‘Aali Lahar kela kahar’ seem to have shown some improvisation, taking up the local issues of Mumbaikars and especially Marathi people, through the skits in the recent episodes. But, in ‘Asa Sasar Surekh Bai’, they need to include some interesting happenings, rather than stretching on the problems faced by Yash’s uncle and his family. But, the saving grace of this serial is Mrunal Dusanis, whose presence on the screen, makes the viewers happy.

It is better not to talk much about ‘Star Pravah’ serials. It is high time, they replace their old serials, with outdated subjects with new offerings. Now, they are also facing competition from  who have also started showing serials on social issues with better subjects, that too at prime time. And, we have already covered them last time.

‘Zapatlela 2′ is more of fantasy than a scary film

Zapatalela 2
Rating: ★★★
Studio: Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Moving Pictures
Producer: Adinath Kothare
Director: Mahesh Kothare
Music: Avdhoot Gupte
Cast: Adinath Kothare, Mahesh Kothare, Sonalee Kulkarni, Sai Tamhankar, Makrand Anaspur
Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Known for offering something new through his films, for the past few years, Mahesh kothare has offered more technicalities through his every film, as a director. He has brought a number of innovations, which included first cinemascope film in Marathi through ‘Dhadakebaaz’ followed by Dolby Digital Sound through ‘Chimni Pakhare’ , Computer generated effects through ‘Pachadlela’, Marathi’s first Sci- fi through ‘Zabardast’ and now 3D, Animatronics and state of the art Computer Graphics in the current sequel of his 1993 super hit film ‘Zapatlela’. Therefore, there were high expectations from his new film.

‘Zapatlela 2′ has thus turned out to be more of fantasy than a scary film, as predicted. This time, the stylish actor turned director seemed to have paid more attention on his favourite puppet ‘Tatya Vinchoo’ and the situation arising after his resuscitation in the beginning of the film. In this second part, we find Kubadya Khavis (Abhijit Chavan) visiting a museum in search of this puppet and after finding it, takes it Baba Chamatkar (Raghvendra Kadkol) to revive him, as the puppet lies lifeless for years, after being shot by Police Officer Mahesh Jadhav in the prequel. He succeeds in doing it; and tries to finish Baba Chamatkar but in the process he dies. Baba Chamatkar goes into Coma.
In the meanwhile, Tatya Vinchoo learning about Lakshya’s death, comes to know that he can enter the soul of his son Adi (Adinath Kothare) who lives with his Grandmother (Madhu Kambikar) in Shrirangpur. It’s time for annual fair at Shrirangpur and there are people like Champa Satarkar (Vishakha Subhedar) camping with her Lavani in a tent house and famous ventriloquist Makarand Watvate (Makarand Anaspure) performing his shows. Adi meets Champa Satarkar’s mod daughter Megha (Sonalee Kulkarni) who studies in Fergusson College and is with her mother for vacation. It’s love at first sight for both. On the other side, Makarand falls in love with visiting TV Journalist (Saie Tamhankar). Adi is also attracted to the art of Makarand, as his father once practiced this profession.

In the film, Tatya Vinchoo’s journey towards his target begins with his first interaction with Saie Tamhankar, followed by Makarand Anaspure and finally reaching Adi through the Guard and Sonalee. The director shoots his climax in traditional style at the Giant wheel in the fair. As predicted, we see the end of Tatya Vinchoo, but certainly giving a clue that he would return again. Will there be ‘Zapatlela 3′ ? Let us wait for the announcement.

‘Zapatlela 2′ is a technically sound film, with good use of 3D and special effects, which are attempted for the first time in Marathi; but, the absence of Lakshya Berde is certainly felt. This does not mean that Adinath hasn’t done well. In fact, he has done his level best in that role, in his own style. The otherwise young chocolate Marathi hero, who has given fine performances in films like ‘Dubhang’ and ‘Satarangee Re’ did try to look different with a simple ‘Boy next door’ image; but, frankly speaking, he did not match up with the character he played.
Zapatlela 2

It was felt that to carry forward the humour created by Lakshya, the director should have opted for an actor well versed with comedy. He could have thought of anyone from among ace comedians like Makarand Anaspure, Sanjay Narvekar or even Siddharth Jadhav or Nilesh Sable, if he needed someone young like Adi, to play Lakshya’s son . And the role of Makya could have easily suited Adi, who is shown as the son of late Lakshya (a ventriloquist) in the film.

Very wisely the director has used other characters, including his own character of Mahesh Jadhav ,which was shown as turning Police Chief now, after a gap of 20 years. As a director, he has given enough scope to Sonalee, to exploit her glamour through all those scenes to her share. Makarand’s character should have been developed more, considering its importance in the film. Saie Tamhankar’s character in the film is just namesake, to create a girlfriend for Makarand. In one sequence, she just remains an observer, watching Makrand perform his tricks during the show. Madhu Kambikar as Grandmother, Vishakha Subhedar as Champa Satarkar, Vijay Chavan as Hawaldar promoted as Inspector and Deepak Shirke as the Guard on duty at Makarand’s tent, have performed well.
Makarand Anaspure

Production designer Nitin Desai has created fine sets suited to different situations and the superb cinematography of Suresh Deshmane makes the film more presentable besides the 3D effect. Avadhoot Gupte’s music is just fine on the lyrics of Guru Thakur. The sound effects have been used well. The work Umesh Jadhav & Phulwa Khamkar as choreographers is clearly noticed, in the Lavani performance by Sonalee. So are the Visual Effects by Enrik Kriyado. The hard work put in by Ramdas Padhye and his son in making of ‘Tatya Vinchoo’ is also to be appreciated.

The film cannot be compared with its prequel; but, is a clean family entertainer for its fantasy part, if viewed in 3D format. Don’t try to find logic in some of the sequences involving the Puppet. After all, it’s the first Marathi film in 3D form and to be appreciated for the effort. The kids would love it, as it is not so scary, as expected. It is certainly better than Bollywood’s ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana -2′ released simultaneously, on the same day.

‘Dubhang’- an action filled family social

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

For the past 25 years, since he turned a director, Mahesh Kothare has been offering quality films in Marathi. No wonder, he has given box office hits. He brought a number of innovations in the technical quality of Marathi films; like introducing the anamorphic format (Cinemascope) through his film ‘Dhadakebaaz’. It may be recalled that he brought Dolby Digital sound to Marathi Cinema with the film ‘Chimni Pakhara’. He made the first Marathi film ‘Pachadlela’ with Digital Special Effects and later turned out to be the first Marathi Film Maker to produce Sci-Fi films. This time, with his latest film ‘Dubhang’, there was something special in the form of Dolby Digital 7.1.

Written by Abhiram Bhadkamkar and the Screenplay by Shekhar Dhavlikar, ‘Dubhang’ (division) revolves around a youngster Rohan Jadhav (Adinath Kothare) who has only one ambition, that is to win nationals and represent India at the Olympics to win a Gold. Like any other young upcoming sportsperson in India, Rohan too struggles in his life. On one side he has to make his coach (Bharat Dabholkar) happy by devoting full concentration to his game and on the other side, his beloved Vishakha (Urmila Kanitkar) is being forced to marry a NRI. So, Rohan takes a quick decision and elopes with his girlfriend, with the hope that his uncle would help him. But, that does not happen. His principled wife, suggests him to be self sufficient and prepares herself to take up a job.

The next few moths are real test of their patience, when it’s time for his wife to deliver a child. Rohan becomes tense, with the worry of managing a third one. However, his friend- Tapshya (Nilesh Sable) and Vishakha’s aunty (Seema Deo) extend moral support to the young couple. But, destiny has something else in store for the couple. When, one night Vishakha is rushed to the hospital, another couple (Ajinkya Deo and Sonali Kulkarni) also walk in there in a posh car. The delivery of both the females take place around the same time with both of them taking their own time to recover. It is during this time, that the big industrialist Sachit (Ajinkya Deo) and Rohan enter into a secret deal.

Adinath Kothare Dubhang

Both the couples live happily thereafter. In fact, Rohan’s life changes completely with a bungalow and and a car at his service. He also helps his friend in return , who is need of a loan for renovation of his hotel. With luxurious living and all the blessings in the form of new sponsor for his game, Rohan works hard to achieve his ultimate goal; but feels the guilt within him. Finally, he decides to reveal the truth to his wife. But, the wife does not take it in the right spirit and she leaves him and takes shelter at her aunty’s place. Now, Rohan has no other option but to break the deal, inviting more trouble for self. The clever director, however knowing the pulse of Marathi audience well , decides to conclude with happy end in the climax.

Going with his tradition, Director Mahesh Kothare has presented a form of entertainment with a difference. He has used this theme based on a Malyalam film, but converted it into a cinematic format suited to Marathi audience. Since this film was to decide the future of his son, he took all possible efforts to project him as young hero with an appeal. This also being the first film for the two good friends in real life now all set to get married next month, it also needed to work their chemistry well through the lead characters they played. In that respect, Mahesh Kothare has succeeded in his mission and the two youngsters have lived up to his expectations with superb performances. With his cute face supported by talent, Adinath should turn a chocolate hero in Marathi film industry.

One expected good performance from Urmila; but surprisingly Adinath also did equally well in most of the emotion filled scenes. Afterall, acting is in his blood. Ajinkya Deo, in that role of an industrialist does very well . His acting is worth watching in the climax. Sonali Kulkarni is at ease like a professional actress in those limited scenes, while Seema Deo, Sunil Tawde, Vijay Chavan, Ganesh Yadav perform their small roles effectively. Among youngsters, Nilesh Yadav and Aarti Solanki have little scope; but they do their jobs well. The other two friends are just namesake, with one of them trying to imitate Tushar Kapoor style of comedy. Music is just okay, with Mahesh using his favorite parody style in one of the songs. Photography is good and so is the editing work. Produced by Shankar Mitkari (Sai Shankar Films) with the sponsorship of Future Generally, the film, has turned out to be an action filled family social. Now, it all remains to be seen, how the Marathi audience is going to welcome this film and the new pair.

Mahesh Kothare – Giving a lift to Marathi Cinema

mahesh-kothare-interview-image

It was sometime during 1969 that a child artiste with the name of Mahesh Kumar grabbed a meaty double role in Bollywood film ‘Raja aur Rank’. Not many knew that he was a Maharashtrian. Mahesh played a young Prince with authority in that age with confidence. He had many good stars to support him in this film. Popular Dancer and actress from South -Padmini and late Sanjeev Kumar were very much part of this film. The film was a hit at that time for its presentation and popular songs. Besides ‘Raja Aur Rank’, Mahesh also played memorable roles as a child actor in ‘Chhota Bhai’, ‘Mere Laal’ and ‘Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani’. Few years later, he was seen playing an adolescent in Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore film ‘Safar’. He played a perfect collegian and younger brother of Feroze Khan , who played a parallel role in this film.

Later, when he studied in Mumbai’s Wilson College, it did not take much time for him to mature as a hero and find roles in Marathi films as a young handsome hero. Simultaneously, he also performed in Gujarathi films. After playing a hero for some time, Mahesh soon produced and directed his own films. Till today, he has dedicated himself as a film maker with perfection on technicalities , knowing his job well, as a director.

Mahesh Kothare
As a successful hero and director through his own productions since 80s from ‘Dhumdhadaka’ to Pachadlela’, Mahesh Kothare has offered all quality films to entertain the Marathi audience. He almost knew the pulse of Marathi audience. And his talent came as a blessing to Marathi film industry in 80s. Mahesh has succeeded in bringing a number of innovations especially in the technical area of Marathi films and has been instrumental in bringing Dolby Digital sound to Marathi Cinema with the film ‘Chimni Pakhara’. He made ‘Pachadlela’ in 2004 – the first Marathi film with Digital Special Effects. He also made his identity as the first Marathi Film Maker to produce Sci-Fi films.

The good news is that his latest directorial film ‘Dubhang’, Produced by Shankar Mitkari, has
received the sponsorship from Future General India Ltd. This film is based on the backdrop of Boxing, where the hero of the film (played by his own son Adinath) has a mission in his life to participate one day in the Olympics and win a Gold medal for the country. While speaking to Marathi Movie World, Mahesh said that the subject of this film was in his mind for the past few years and had even talked to popular actors like Shreyas Talpade and Reitesh Deshmukh to play the lead; but, somehow the idea didn’t work. Finally, he found his hero in his own son-Adinath , who had turned mature by the passage of time to fit into this lead role. “It was almost like the role was waiting for him” he said.

Mahesh is very excited to speak about his new film ‘Dubhang’. “It may sound like Bollywood’s ‘Dabang’, but the meaning of both the films are different. In fact, I was asked to change the title of my film by the makers of ‘Dabhang’, when they came to know about it. But, since I had registered it much before, I had to convince them that it carried a different meaning. You will find lot of twists and turns in this film , with a story that you haven’t heard of before in Marathi and Hindi films.

Actually, I have taken the idea from a Malyalam film, which was shown to me by my friend. So, I took the proper rights from them but finally gave a different look to the film. Fortunately, all my artistes responded very well and Adinath in particular playing an aspiring boxer, has fulfilled all my expectations. There is a love story angle to this film, with the girl in his life standing by his side during the time of crisis. My first scene itself begins with Urmila’s marriage to a stranger against her wish and Adinath elopes with her,” he added.

Speaking about the lead pair Urmila and Adinath, Mahesh was high praise for the girl and her talent. “Urmila is a talented actress and I have seen her potential through her previous film. Adinath turned out to be a perfect match for her.” All that Mahesh had to say that both had developed a good chemistry between them. “I had seen them coming closer during my previous project ‘Shubhamangal’ in which she was a leading lady and Adinath was my assistant in direction. Now, you will witness their actual love story happening on the screen,” he concluded.
