Are some Marathi film makers avoiding the press shows?

It looks like that some Marathi film makers have set a new trend of not holding press shows before their film’s release, for the reasons best known to them. Some film makers combine the press show and premiere on the day before the film’s release or on the first day of the show. In such cases, how is it possible to publish the reviews in time ? This week, a PRO of the film ’66 Sadashiv’ clearly mentioned to all film critics that there will not be any press show of this film, perhaps to avoid repeated inquiries.

To confirm, whether the other two films releasing simultaneously, had also avoided press shows, MMW spoke to a senior film journalist, who  confirmed that he had not received invite for the press show from these two film makers also.

By the way, besides ’66 Sadashiv’ written and directed by Yogesh Deshpande, two other Marathi films which are also lined up for release on coming Friday are, Ek Hota Pani directed by Rohan Satghare and and Reema Amrapurkar directed ‘Purushottam’.

66 Sadashiv’ looks like a family entertainer, from its film’s poster, while ‘Ek Hota Pani’ is clearly about the most important social issue, i.e. conservation of water. ‘Purushottam’ is based on the work done by Dr. Purushottam Bhapkar and so can be termed as a biopic.

‘Baalaa’ set on Cricket backdrop releases timely

Cricket is considered to be the religion of people living in India. So, much is the craze of cricket.  After we saw Cricket based films like ‘Iqbal’ and ‘Lagaan’ in Hindi, there were some films like ‘Well Done Bhalya’ and ‘Shikshanachya Aaichha Gho’ in Marathi too.

Presently, the IPL-20 Cricket matches are going on and the World Cup Cricket is just few days away. So, the timing is perfectly suited for a film based on cricket. Presented by Rakesh Singh and directed by Sachindra Sharma , new Marathi film ‘Baalaa ’ has been released this Friday.

Written by director Sachindra Sharma himself, the film stars Mihiresh Joshi in title role of a boy who is passionate about the game of cricket and who holds a dream of becoming a cricketer to his heart. The trailer of this film clearly indicates that his Police Inspector father wants his son to become a top police officer, but the boy is keen on playing cricket despite opposition from father. Whether the boy fulfils his dream ?

To find out, one has to watch this film, which also stars Upendra Limaye, Kranti Redkar, Vikram Gokhale, Suhasini Mulay, Kamlesh Sawant in lead roles. Former India Cricket Captain Late Ajit Wadekar will also be seen in this film as a cricket coach .

Will 8th February prove suicidal day for Marathi films ?

Till now, we have witnessed five to six Marathi films released on the same day. Only last week we saw the release of four films simultaneously and saw the results. Now, coming Friday Marathi films will be creating a new record of simultaneous releases, with about 9 films selecting 8th February 2019, as their date of release. The names of these films are, ‘Aasud‘, ‘Bhai-2‘, ‘Dahavi, ‘Dhadpad‘, ‘Luckee‘, ‘Premrang‘, ‘Premwaari‘, ‘Readymix‘ & ‘Unadmasti‘ . And, this has invited critical reactions from Marathi film lovers. Many of them have questioned these film makers on social networking media.

One such critical reaction has come from one of the media person, whose message has become viral on social networking. He has called it suicidal or #Loot. “Neither does the producer understand nor do the distributors of these films or marketing and PR guys advice the producers the right thing to do,” it reads. And this certainly makes everybody think seriously on this issue. There should be proper understanding among such film makers. How do they expect the audience to watch their film, by keeping a wide choice? If this continues, it will certainly put the audience into a dilemma and there is a possibility that they may prefer to watch such films on television at a later date.

Three Marathi films to release simultaneously coming Friday

Marathi Movies Tatya Lahane, Hostel Days, Barayan
Marathi movies ‘Dr. Tatya Lahane – Angaar’, ‘Hostel Days’ & ‘Barayan’

The year 2017 concluded with release of film ‘Deva‘ and ‘Gachchi‘ and began well with release of ‘Ye Re Ye Re Paisa‘ last Friday. But, coming Friday Marathi film lovers will witness release of three Marathi films simultaneously. One may call it a Sankranti gift showering upon the audience, making them think, which one is the right choice for them. So, can we expect the film makers of these films to distribute ’tilgul’ to welcome the audience to the cinema halls all over Maharashtra?

Among these three Marathi films ‘Dr. Tatya Lahane‘ is a biopic on renowned eye surgeon Dr.Tatya Lahane, with comedy King Makarand Anaspure getting an opportunity to play a different type of character with a challenge. Directed by Virag Madhumalati Wankhade, this film is produced by Vandana Wankhade and also stars senior artistes like Ramesh Deo, Alka Kubal, Nishigandha Wad and Bharat Ganeshpure. The second film to be released on Friday is ‘Barayan‘ which throws light on the pressures on children appearing for 12th Standard exams and high expectations from their parents. The film will also expose the money making attitude of educational institutions. This film is produced by Daivata Patil, presented by BJP leader Shina NC and directed by Deepak Patil.

The third film ‘Hostel Days‘ promises a musical entertainer, taking the elderly audience down memory lane to their College Hostel days , though the film is targeted at youngsters with seven new faces in the company of Prarthana Behere & Aroh Welankar.

‘Paisa’ a new adventure reality show soon on Marathi Television

Paisa Reality Show Serial   Film maker Sakar Raut, who has recently completed two Marathi films like ‘Hatke Love Story’ and ‘Shivya’ is presently directing a film ‘Sangharsh Yatra’’, which is a biopic on Late Gopinath Munde. But, besides these three projects, presently he is producing a unique money & adventure based reality show, for Marathi television. In fact, this is the debut of Team SR on Marathi television.

Produced by Golden Petals Films, ‘Paisa’ will present 28 contestants, which will be selected via audition in Mumbai. The entire show is conceptualized by Sakar Raut and will be executed by his team SR. However, nothing has been disclosed about the channel on which this show will be presented.

According to Sakar, the concept of the show is interesting and would present something that has never happened on Marathi television before. “We wanted to do something different and aggressive, with which the youth could relate to. The show is an ideal mix of action and drama & will be entertaining for all age groups.” he said.

‘Jogwa’ cinematographer turns director with ‘Ganvesh’

Mukta Barve, Smita Tambe, Atul Jagdale, Ganvesh‘Jogwa’, a milestone Marathi movie, directed by late Rajiv Patil which won five national film awards including best film, was appreciated by critics and audience equally and was also acclaimed internationally. It dealt with discrimination, sexual oppression, superstition, archaic traditions, hypocrisy, exploitation of oppressed section of our society. The rustic beauty of rural India was beautifully captured through his lenses by cinematographer Atul Jagdale.

Now, Atul Jagdale is getting ready to shoot a film on rural background in the form of a new Marathi movie ‘Ganvesh’. He has locked a script written by Tejas Ghadge. Mr Ghadge has also penned the screenplay and dialogues of the said film.

The story of this film is about a man working at a bricks making factory. His son gets selected to deliver a speech in his school on an Independence Day, 15th August. But, it is on a condition of wearing an Uniform while doing so. To acquire Uniform, what this down trodden family goes through, is the one liner of the film. Apart from cinematography, Mr Jagdale is directing ‘Ganvesh’ and also is producing it under the banner Vijayate Entertainment. The ‘Jogwa’ connection continues. Three principal cast members, Mukta Barve, Kishore Kadam, Smita Tambe, of ‘Jogwa’, will also be part of ‘Ganvesh’. It will be interesting to see, whether this ‘Jogwa’ connection will work this time round.

High Court orders Screening of Marathi films mandatory in Mumbai

Superhit Marathi Films

Gone are the days, when Marathi films were released in only two or three single screen theatres in Mumbai. In the recent past, some of the Marathi films even saw the multiplexes opening their doors, looking at the overwhelming response they witnessed. But, the majority of the single screen theatres were reluctant to release Marathi films. Indeed, Marathi films have been doing a good business posing as a big competition for the Bollywood, especially in Mumbai. No wonder, some of the Bollywood film distributors started blocking all the theatres in Mumbai , preventing the release of Marathi films and the theatre owners only encouraged such unethical practice. This was a deliberate move to only kill the popularity of Marathi films.

Such a step motherly treatment to regional cinema received a strong opposition from Bangalore, when the South Indian Film Federation warned the theatre owners against blocking all the theatres with a new Bollywood release during the first week. It had only prevented the regional cinema to find theatres for release. And, their protest and warning did help to curb such an unprincipled practice. In a place like Mumbai, the theatre owners were only taking advantage of the neglect by Maharashtra Government and the tolerance of Marathi film makers towards this issue. There is already a government resolution of 1968, making it mandatory for theatre owners to screen a minimum of 112 shows per year. But, the theatre owners only disobeyed it and had moved to court recently challenging this resolution.

However, the latest verdict of the Bombay High Court has come timely giving a great relief to the Marathi film industry. As per this ruling, all single screen theatres across greater Mumbai will have to screen at least 44 shows of Marathi films every year. This will have to be implemented in such a way that at least for four week in a year they will have to screen 11 shows of Marathi films per week, that too between 12 noon and 9 pm. Isn’t that a great victory for Marathi film makers ? MMW takes this opportunity to congratulate the entire Marathi film industry on this happy occasion; but at the same time expect quality films, so as to keep the audience with them.

There were arguments and counter arguments before the division bench of Justice gave their ruling. Some of the arguments in favour of theatre owners also went to the extent of saying that Marathi people were more keen on watching Hindi films. But, the sensible division bench passed the most welcome verdict which goes in favour of Marathi film industry. Nobody should take Marathi people for granted. They are admirers of good cinema. If there are bad Bollywood films, they always turn their back to them; but if there are good quality films no matter whether in Marathi or Hindi, they never miss them. Marathi film makers should take note of this audience psychology and offer something new and different to attract good crowd. And who says, Marathi films are only watched by Marathi people ? In the recent past, Marathi films, released in multiplexes witnessed 50% of non marathi audience. Further, prints of Marathi films released with English sub titles, have received multiple audience even at international level.

Maharashtra should take a lesson from Karanataka

Hrithik Roshan

The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce( KFCC) have come strongly to protect the rights of their local Kannada films. When they observed that the distributors of Bollywood film ‘Kites’ had violated the existing rule of releasing the film in Karnataka, they have imposed a ban on the film’s release. As a result, ‘Kites’ will not be released in Karanataka this week .

It is understood that ‘Kites’ was being released in 46 screens in the city of Bangalore and south Karnataka alone against the limit of 21 screens. This had resulted in the blockage of other south Indian films including Kannada films due for release , for want of theatres. In the entire state the distributors of ‘Kites’ had planned to release their film in 90 theatres against the limit of 24 imposed by KFCC.

It has been observed that in the recent past, some big banner Bollywood film distributors have been releasing their films with maximum number of prints blocking almost all the theatres, so as to make profits during the first week. But, ‘Kites’ had surpassed all the records and hence this intervention by KFCC. No one has come forward to oppose the move of KFCC, as it was in the interest of promoting south Indian films including Kannada films in their state. KFCC stated that those theatre owners defying the ban, will not be allowed to release any regional film henceforth.

Can our Marathi Chitrapat Mahamandal and our Maharashtra Government take a lesson from Karnataka ? How can we promote our own Marathi films, if the Big banners play this game of blocking theatres ? Recently, even actor Kamal Hasan blamed our state for not encouraging Marathi films, the way all south Indian states encourage their regional language films. Availability of theatres is the main concern of all Marathi film distributors, though they already have the audience now responding well to Marathi films.

Political Censorship blocking the progress of Marathi films

Marathi Cinema

Last week it was ‘Zenda’ the marathi film, which was stalled for projecting a character resembling a Maharashtra Minister. Now, another marathi film ‘Shikshanachya Aaicha Gho’ faces a threat from a Political outfit, for using such a title to the film. It is rather surprising that Political censorship is coming in the way of a film, which has already received censor’s certification and is almost due for release. It looks like that blocking the release of a film and issuing threats has become a new political stunt.

“If the same political outfit is so much against the title of this film, why they were sitting quiet for so long ?” remarked the film maker Mahesh Manjrekar in a TV interview yesterday. And, the stand of the director not to bow down to the pressure seems to be justified. He has even approached the chief minister of Mahrashtra, who has assured him all the help. “If any film which has been passed by the censors, need any kind of police protection at the cinema halls during the release, in anticipation of any threats, the same will be provided,” assured the CM while addressing the media.

Looking at the objection raised towards the film’s title, the director of the film has already made it clear that it was with an intention to express displeasure over the existing educational system which is putting psychological pressure on students from school and parents. He has used the same in the context of referring today’s taxing educational system and not with the intention of abusing Mother. But, as we see it happening these days, the progress of Marathi film and the creativity of the film maker is blocked by our own Marathi people. Instead of watching the film first, there has been unnecessary hue and cry before the release of the film.

Where were these objections when late Dada Kondke made films with double meaning dialogues? Why the same outfit did not object to the dialogues and abuses in the same Konkani language used in popular Marathi play ‘Vastraharan’ which has almost crossed 5000 shows? In fact, this music based drama contains more bad words and abuses, worst than the title of this film and is watched by children along with their parents.

Moreover, this popular play was also watched by all political leaders in Maharashtra during its 5000th show held in Shanmukhanand Hall recently. If the abuses and bad words in the same Konkani language are accepted by our leaders and large number of drama enthusiasts in Maharashtra, why object to these Konkani words ‘Aaicha Gho’?
