Marathi actresses make it big in Hindi serials

Shreya Bugde, Actress, Chala Hava Yeu Dya
Shreya Bugde

Marathi artistes working in Hindi serials is not new to home viewers. In the past, well known artistes like Nitish Bharadwaj, Varsha Usgaonkar have played prominent roles in grand TV serial ‘Mahabharat’. Then we saw, many more talented artistes in Marathi like Reema Lagoo and Supriya Pilgaonkar also establishing themselves, through popular serial ‘Tu Tu Main Main’. Recently, many  Marathi artistes were seen in important roles in Hindi TV serials. And, prominent among them were Neena Kulkarni, Bharati Achrekar, Usha Nadkarni , Vikram Gokhale and others.

Now, we findChala Hava Yeu Dya fame Shreya Bugde Seth  bagging lead role in the DD national serial ‘Albeli- kahani Pyar ki’ which has began its telecast recently on DD National channel from Monday to Friday at prime time. Shreya has found a very challenging role in Hindi and she is making her presence felt, displaying her ample talent.

Among others Neena Kulkarni has been doing well as a south Indian woman in Star Plus serial ‘Yeh hai Mohabattein’ , while Bharti Achrekar makes her presence felt in another Star Plus serial ‘Sumit Sambhal Lega’ telecast at 10 pm. But, it was surprising to find Bhargavi Chirmule performing the prominent role of  Sunayna Devi, in new one hour serial ‘Siya Ka Raam’ which is Ramayana from Sita’s point of view. There are other important characters in this serial, also played by some Marathi artistes and one of them is Janhavi’s father in ‘Honar Suun Mi Hya Gharchi’, Mr. Manoj Kolhatkar.

This is a big honour for our Marathi artistes. Now, with all these popular Marathi artistes in hindi serials, our own Marathi serials will have to make their scripts interesting, as the Marathi audience is likely to shift to Hindi, to watch their favourite Marathi artistes.

During the week, we saw Asmita fame Mayuri Wagh performing rain dance on the Maiboli music channel. And, the song was from the Marathi film ‘Bandh Premache’, which had many big artistes in lead roles.

Madhuri Dixit will have a good exposure on Marathi TV, as the programme ‘Marathi Taraka’ will be telecast on Sunday 22nd November on Zee Talkies. By the way, though Madhuri was the chief guest for this show, she shook her legs, in presence of our Marathi taraka, who performed her dances, from different Hindi films

‘Siddhant’ makes life easy, using Mathematics principle

Siddhant Marathi film

Rating: ★★★ ½
Studio/presenter: Navalakha Arts & Holy basil Productions
Producers: Nilesh Navalakha, Vivek Kajaria, Amit Ahirrao
Director: Vivek Wagh
Writer: Shekhar Dhavalikar
Editor: Mayur Hardas
Genres: Drama
Censor: U/A
Duration: 120 Min.
Cast: Vikram Gokhale, Swati Chitnis, Sarang Sathaye, Kishore Kadam, Ganesh Yadav, Neha Mahajan, Madhavi Soman, Kanchan Jadhav  & Archit Deodhar

There is a famous saying “Mathematics may not teach us how to add love or minus hate. But, it gives us every reason to hope that every problem has a solution.” Based on this philosophy, director  Vivek Wagh has presented  an emotional relationship between Grandfather Appa Thosar ( Vikram Gokhale) and Grandson Vakratunda ( Archit Deodhar) living in a coastal town Dive Aagar, off Alibaug.

While the grandfather Appa  is a retired mathematician, his grandson Vakratunda is very weak in understanding Mathematics. Vakratunda has lost his parents in an unfortunate accident, so he lives with his Grandfather besides Uncle Gaja Kaka and Aunty  who run a family business of a small packaged food factory. Vakratunda’s elder brother Madhav( Sarang Sathe)  has left the house, only to turn a chef on a ship. However, his girlfriend Dr. Asavari ( Neha Mahajan) , who lives in the neighborhood, is in touch with his family, treating Appa, as and when required.

Vikram Gokhale, SiddhantWhen Madhav returns, after hearing about Appa suffering a shock, after Vakratunda’s inability to learn maths, he takes over to teach Vakratunda, in his own style , allowing him to attend to his hobby of art and craft, making beautiful clay idols. The film is all about facing the challenges in life, with the help of Mathematics. Be it Appa’s ideology, Madhav’s wish to attempt a Greek recipe, to be eligible for job, Gaja Kaka’s way of making his father happy or Vakratunda’s way of learning maths through his hobby of idol making, they are all based on the principles of Mathematics. And, to a great extent, the director has succeeded in proving his point of view, through cinematic presentation of this small and simple story.

The film takes a long time, to pick up with its story, as lot of time has been wasted in unwanted things like involvement of Inamdar Sir and Appa’s repeated efforts to persuade his grandson to learn Maths in his own way. It is only in the post interval session, the film takes a firm grip on its story and concludes with a timely message. The film’s music by Shailendra Barve is most suited to the atmosphere of the picturesque  coastal  township, with beautiful lyrics. Background music is also equally appealing with superb sound effects used, on many occasions.

The film belongs to two main characters played by Vikram Gokhale and Archit Deodhar; but, good support comes from versatile artistes Swati Chitnis, Ganesh Yadav, Madhavi Soman, Kishore kadam and others. Sarang Sathe and Neha Mahajan match well, to represent the young generation and their ideology. This  is the second film of Neha Mahajan with a prominent role, after ‘Coffee Aani Barach Kahee’ and she has done well. Barring few lengthy scenes in the first half, which also reduces pace of the film; overall it is a good presentation, on a different subject. Vivek Wagh does a good job on his debut, combining  humor with emotions well, through many important scenes.

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Family is the most important thing in this world. And in Maharashtra, there is a lot of importance for family bond. No matter, today there is a generation gap existing in almost every family; but, the traditional culture in Maharashtra has always kept such families together. Today, we see our new generation following the westernised culture. But, in spite of that today’s wise parents don’t put many restrictions on their children’s movement during late night hours , realizing the pressure of studies and competition they are required to face. However, many a times, it is the bad company of their children, that poses serious problems. New Marathi film ‘Thoda Tujha Thoda Majha’ takes up this most timely sensitive subject, to present a sensible film, involving all the three generations.

Set on the backdrop of Pune city, the film opens up with a raid on a Rave party of youngsters. In that group is a young boy Sameer Sawant( Nikhil Kakade) from a well to do family and only son of his parents Ramesh & Malati Sawant ( Ajinkya Deo and Varsha Usgaonkar) . When Sameer’s father seeks the help of his influential friend and goes to the Police station, to rescue his son, he faces humiliation. It is not only the ACP at the Police station( Ashok Samarth) , who makes him realize his duty as a parent; but also a TV news reporter exposes him. While the boy is released on bail; with the report of the blood samples awaited, the father who feels cheated by his pampered son, drives him out of the house.

Luckily for the boy, his grandparents, who are on a visit to their place, take him along with them, to their native place. The Boy finds a big change in his own self and returns back to Pune, to give a big surprise to his parents on their 25th Wedding Anniversary. But, around this time, the parents receive another news. And that’s the turning point of this film in the climax.

Vikram Gokhale Nikhil Kakade

It’s not that films on such subjects haven’t been dealt by Marathi cinema. In the past Smita Talwalkar had presented one such sensible film ‘7 Chya aat Gharat’ , to show how too much of liberty could land youngsters into trouble. ‘Thoda Tujha Thoda Majha’ shows both the sides very well. While showing the concern of parents, it has also shown the point of view of youngsters. Through this film, the film maker has tried to show that it is the proper communication between the youngsters and their parents, could avoid many problems. At the same time, he has also shown how a bad company could land such youngsters from well to do family into trouble.

The youngsters selected in this film are most appropriate choice and look like real final year college students, with their body language and other activities. It is only the young hero of this film, falls short in acting in their company, especially while delivering some of the dialogues . But, at some important situations, while interacting with parents, he seems okay. The sincere effort put in by the film maker in presenting such a timely subject with a message, is to be highly appreciated. In the role of grand parents, both Vikram Gokhale and Sulbha Deshpande have played their parts with perfect understanding, trying to find quick solutions on differences between parents and their only child.

In the role of Sameer’s father, Ajinkya Deo is a perfect choice. He has been able to deliver, what was expected from him, at different situations. Varsha Usgaonkar, who plays a wise mother, looks still beautiful and fit, setting an ideal example before today’s young actresses. In the role of Sameer’s girlfriend, Model turned TV actress Sukhada Thigale (‘Majhe Mann Tujhe Jhale’ fame) does a satisfying debut, though she doesn’t find much scope in this film. Pushkar Jog does a cameo in style, indicating that today’s youngsters pay more attention to their work, rather than formal clothes. Music by Tabi Parik is just fine; but Ishwar Bidri’s photography is something very special. He has captured the beauty of Konkan very nicely. Ashok Samarth plays the aggressive ACP in his typical style, while Dr. Vilas Ujavane plays his part with ease. All others in supporting cast have done a good job.

‘Thoda Tujha Thoda Majha’ is a worth watch for entire family. It has something very important to convey, which is so relevant to parents and their young children.

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Medical science has made tremendous progress in the recent times with advanced treatments available for all ailments. Today, surgeries in hospitals have become very common. But, the common man who has complete faith in the doctor, is still kept in dark about the actual requirement of surgery for a particular purpose. We have heard so many stories appearing in the news, where doctors and hospitals have been made target by errant relatives of patient over negligence during a surgery or operation. But, nothing can be proved against any particular doctor, as in many cases he gets the benefit of doubt.

However, new Marathi film ‘Aaghaat’ goes beyond this benefit of doubt by showing a face to face fight between two doctors, where a junior doctor Dr. Smita Deshmukh (Mukta Barve) takes on her senior Dr. Khurana (Vikram Gokhale) over his negligence in taking a decision during an operation, where a 22 year old patient Sangeeta Pradhan ( Kadambari Kadam) is made to suffer.

Dr. Khurana is a leading surgeon in a well known private trust hospital, where Dr. Smita Deshmukh is doing her M.S. as a resident doctor. During one such operation, Dr. Khurana gives Dr. Smita her first chance to perform a surgery. But, when he tells her to remove both the ovaries of the patient, she refuses to obey his orders, as she feels that the second ovary could be saved, as preliminary reports were still awaited. At the operation theatre, Dr. Khurana takes it as his insult and gets the second ovary removed by Dr. Smita’s colleague (Shashank Shende). Soon, the patient develops complications and Dr. Khurana lands into trouble, as Dr. Smita with the support of patient’s family members openly challenges her superior.

Dr. Khurana being the most influential person, pressurizes the hospital administration to sack Dr. Smita. But, Dr. Smita like a true protagonist dares to fight her own battle and tells the administration to set up an inquiry commission. The hospital authorities agree for the same as they fear about Dr. Smita approaching the press. Even the inquiry commission seems to be going against her, when the film’s story takes a sudden twist in the climax, with an unknown character coming as a witness to her rescue. Dr. Smita wins her battle against a biggest giant in medicine field, without the support of media and that is the real strength of her character.

Mr. Vikram Gokhale makes his debut as a director through this film with a sensational subject, which is so relevant to the common man in modern times. He has paid more attention on the attitude of an individual –the antagonist character, which he plays himself and the young principled doctor, who does not forget the oath she has taken to serve this profession with service to humanity. Ethics in medical profession is her motto, based on which she finally wins her battle. ‘Aaghaat’ does not expose the corruption in medical practice, but it certainly hits out at unethical medical practice.

Vikram Gokhale, Actor

The film has a strong story written by Dr. Nitin Lavangare with good presentation of screenplay by Sameer Vidhwans, supported by timely dialogues penned by Sameer Vidhwans and Kshitij Patwardhan. Camerawork and editing is up to the mark and the background music is appealing. This being a character oriented film, more attention has been paid on emotions of every artiste and therefore you will find many well known talented artistes like Dr. Amol Kolhe (playing a psychiatrist) , Aniket Vishwasrao, (as Sangeeta’s boy friend, who agrees to marry her in spite of her ailment), Shashank Shende( as a obedient resident doctor) , Smita Tambe (Playing Shashank’s wife), Suhas Joshi( as Dean of the Hospital), Anant Jog ( as a trustee), Vidyadhar Joshi( as Hospital administrator), Arun Nalawade( as Pathologist), Madhav Abhyankar ( as Sangeeta’s helpless father) and Kiran Karmarkar in a very special role in the climax scene. In short, they make a very good team for the film’s success.

Mohan Tondwalkar is no more

Mohan Tondwalkar who headed the most popular Marathi Drama company Kalavaibhav, passed away today after a brief illness. He was 77. Mr. Tondwalkar had produced 80 Marathi plays, including popular plays like ‘Purush’, ‘Gela Madhav Kunikade’, ‘Nati Goti’, ‘Vaadaa Chirebandi’, ‘Premasathi Vattel te’ and the latest- ‘Shambhuraje’.
