‘Natasamrat’ brings the best out of Nana Patekar
Rating: ★★★ ½

Shirwadkar Writer: Kiran Yadnyopavit, Abhijeet Deshpande Lyrics: Kusumagraj, Guru Thakur Music: Ajit Parab Cinematographer (DOP): Ajith Reddy Genres: Drama Censor: U Duration: 130 Min. Cast: Nana Patekar, Vikram Gokhale, Jitendra Joshi, Sandeep Pathak, Mrunmayee Deshpande, Sunil Barve, Medha Manjrekar, Ajit Parab, Neha Pendse, Jayant WadkarMovie Review by: Ulhas Shirke |
V. V. Shirwadkar alias Kusumagraj was a well known Marathi Poet and writer, who was influenced by Shakespeare, Othello, Hamlet, Macbeth, Tolstoy in his writings. So, when he wrote his Marathi play ‘Natsamrat’‘, it was based on Shakespeare’s tragedy ‘King Lear’. ‘Natasamraat’ was staged for many years with record number of shows and well known actors like Dr. Shreeram Lagoo, Yashwant Dutt, Datta Bhat and others, have performed the central character of Ganpatrao Belvalkar successfully. But, the one performed by Dr. Shreeram Lagoo, is still fresh in the memory of those, who saw his great performance.
Now, director Mahesh Manjrekar has presented the cinematic version of this popular play, in his own way, with Nana Patekar playing the central character of Ganpatrao alias Appasaheb Belvalkar . And, in addition to his family members comprising of wife kaveri (Medha Manjrekar), Son (Ajit Parab), daughter in law (Neha Pendse), grand daughter ( Pranjal Parab), daughter ( Mrunmayee Deshpande), son in law ( Sunil Barve), he has introduced a new character of Rambhau, played by versatile actor Vikram Gokhale, as his close friend. In the process, he has extended his screenplay, with some witty conversations, taking place between the two friends, whenever they meet, over the session of drinks.
In this film, the director has paid more attention on the home affairs of Ganpatrao, after his retirement, on receiving the highest honour of ‘NatSamrat’. In the process, the film has turned more into a family melodrama rather than a monologue, reminding you of some happenings from bollywood films like ‘Baghban’, ‘jaisi karni Vaisi Bharni’, ‘Avtaar’ and few others. In ‘Natasamrat’, Ganpatrao played by Nana Patekar faces insults, first from his daughter in law, which forces him to leave his own house, along with his wife Kaveri. But, before that Ganpatrao has committed a biggest mistake in his life, i.e. by transferring all his assets in the name of his son and daughter. Ganpatrao being close to his daughter, is offered shelter by her and his son in law, in their house.
But, when the daughter alleges her own father for stealing her money, Ganpatrao and his wife quietly leave their house during the midnight hours of heavy rains, for onward journey to their native place. But, on the way, during a halt, Kaveri , who is already suffering from fever, passes away during her sleep. This brings Ganpatrao literally on the roads, as the person, who steals his bag, later offers him shelter under the bridge along with his small family. Though he is traced by his son and daughter, in an old drama theatre which is gutted in fire; Ganpatrao refuses to go with them and performs one last scene from his play , to conclude this film with its tragic end.
This film entirely belongs to actor Nana Patekar , who has played his role with total conviction. This is a lifetime role for a complete actor in him. In short, ‘Natasamraat’ has brought out the best out of Nana Patekar . But, this would not have been possible for him , without the support of Medha Manjrekar, who has given a wonderful performance as his co star Kaveri in this film. Medha has performed a role, which is more than her age; but, with her expressive face and good make up by Vikram Gaikwad, she was able to give her best. Another good performance, comes from young Mrunmayee Deshpande, who has done those two big emotion filled scenes, opposite senior experienced actor like Nana Patekar, exceptionally well. There was no doubt about the ability of Vikram Gokhale, as he perfectly fitted into the witty character of Rambhau. The director has rightly taken close up scenes on him, to exploit his spontaneous facial expressions. Among others in the supporting cast, good performances also come from Sunil Barve, Ajit Parab, Neha Pendse, Nilesh Divekar, Sarang Sathe , Jaywant Wadkar, little Pranjal Parab and others. But, Savita Malpekar and Vidyatai Patwardhan are just namesake in this film. On location sound used by by Srikant kamble, art direction by Eknath kadam, cinematography by Ajith Reddy and background score by Ajit Parab are the other plus points of this film.
This film, which presents the story of 70s era, does not actually relate to the changing lifestyle of today’s nuclear family system. So, it remains to be seen, how it appeals to today’s new generation. Moreover, today’s senior citizens have many other options after retirement. But, the central character of this film, being an actor, certainly sends a strong message to all those , for not committing the mistake done by Ganpatrao in this film. The film is technically very well presented and hence stands a chance of inviting the attention of maximum film lovers. A worth watch, for the entire family together.
‘Balkadu’ inspires ‘Marathi Manoos’, to fight injustice
Rating: ★★★
Genres: Drama Censor: U/A Duration: 124 Min. Studio/presenter: Maratha Entertainment, Sanjay Raut Producers: Swapna Patkar Director: Atul Kale Screenplay: Ganesh Pandit, Ambar Hadap Director of Photography: Ajit Reddy Editor: Ashish Mhatre, Apurva Motiwale Cast: Umesh Kamat, Neha Pendse, Prasad Oak, Anand Ingale, Tiku Talsania, Bhau Kadam , Sharad Ponkshe, Pushkar Shrotri Movie Review by: Keertikumar Kadam |
Presented by Sanjay Raut and produced under the banner Royal Maratha Entertainment the new released Marathi film ‘Balkadu‘ is produced by Swapna Patkar and directed by Atul Kale. This film is inspired from one of the most charismatic socio-political persona of recent times, late Balasaheb Thackeray.
Balkadu’s story is about a simple and straightforward Balkrishna Patil, a young history teacher in a school, possessing special ability to hear voices of great historical figures like Nehru, Shastri, Savarkar, Subhash Chandra Bose and Balasaheb Thackeray. Balakrishna, who originally resided in a Lalbaugh chawl, had to shift his residence to Nalasopara during his childhood. After many years, he meets his close childhood friend Sai Bawdekar (Neha Pendse).
When he shares his thoughts with Sai, she understands him and supports him, in his every action. besides She helps him to do a part time job as a dubbing artist in Marathi, in her history channel, where she works as EP. After seeking help from a psychologist, the voices Balakrishna hears, vanish but one voice clings onto him, i.e. Balasaheb’s voice. How a simpleton, who turns into an angry young man, for betterment of local people, is the story of the film.
In the film, Director has tried to do a sincere job, he has smartly used Balasaheb’s voice-over, to create the impact in certain scenes. Balasaheb’s interactive dialogues with the lead actor, are well crafted and make an interesting watch. The ‘cartoon’ aspect is also creatively used. There is a lot to be desired in screenplay department (Ganesh Pandit, Ambar Hadap) which seems disjointed. In fact, it starts with a promise of a good screenplay, but goes wayward towards the latter half. It has become unnecessarily lengthy and preachy towards the end. Aman Vidhate’s art direction is satisfactory and so is music (Ajit-Samir), though the ‘Powada’ is very good. Avadhoot Gupte’s song is very well used in background. The costumes are satisfactory, but Neha Pendse‘s costumes are more impressive and stand out.
The saving grace of Balkadu are the dialogues and performances. Especially, the Dialogues are fabulous . They have the required punch and comic punches, which are smartly interlaced. Umesh Kamat has come out of his comfort zone and has essayed the lead role with conviction. He scores points in wittiness and subtle timing. Neha Pendse does what was expected of her and looks ravishingly stunning, on screen. Prasad Oak carries a negative shade reasonably well. Rest of the cast, Anand Ingale, Tiku Talsania, Bhau Kadam , Sharad Ponkshe, Pushkar Shrotri lend good support. Supriya Pathare as mother, steals the show with her comic timing used in simple situations.
‘Balkadu’ is a must watch for Balasaheb’s followers scattered all over Maharashtra. Others may like it watch it, for good performances.

Neha Pendse – talent unlimited
Neha Pendse came into limelight especially after her appearance in TV serial ‘Bhagyalakshmi’ in which she plays the title role; but she became more popular among Marathi audience with her dancing skills through Zee Marathi’s favourite programme ‘Ekapeksha Ek- Apsara Aali’. Not many were aware about her entry into Marathi films through ‘Agnidivya’ for which she received a state award and the recently released film ‘Karuya Udyachi Baat’ which won Green award from USA.
Marathi Movie World spoke to Neha Pendse, who has also done 13 South Indian films so far and that too in lead role, besides being part of Bollywood and Hindi TV serials as a child artiste.
Q. How did you turn to this Glamour world ?
A: It is very difficult to tell that. Since childhood, I am into acting. I took my acting lessons from Mr. Ramnath Thorval at Prithvi Theatres. He suggested my name to few people and after watching my one performance, I started getting more offers.
Q: So, did you begin as a child artiste?
A: Yes, about 10-12 years ago there wasn’t much competition among child artistes. Even in Bollywood, there were very few child artistes. Those days Ektaa kapoor was making her first TV serial and it was a coincidence that it turned out to be my first serial too. I have performed in serials like ‘Hasretein’, ‘Padosi’ and ‘Khushi’. Besides that I have also performed in films like ‘Pyar Koi Khel Nahin’, ‘Tumse Achha kaun Hai’and ‘Deewane’. Sometime back on Doordarshan they showed a tele film ‘Ghunghaat’ by Anant Mahadevan. I have also performed in it.
Nehha Pendse
Q: You have also performed in South Indian films ?
A: Yes, I have done 13 South Indian films so far. In all these films, whether it was kannada, Telugu, Tamil or Malyalam; I have played lead roles.
Q: Can you compare South films with Marathi films ?
A: Yes, South and Marathi films are regional films. But, in respect of presentation and budget, we are far behind them. In Marathi, we find division of audience, for example: Intelligent, Commercial and typical. In south, the film makers very well know what the audience expect and that glamour is offered through those regional films; which prevents their regular audience from watching another language films. In turn, we have plenty of
talent in Marathi, which certainly makes us superior to south and Bollywood films.
Q: How did you enter Marathi entertainment industry ?
A: ‘Pimplepaan’ directed by Chandrakant Kulkarni was my first serial followed by ‘Bhagyalakshmi’ and then it was my appearance in ‘Ekapeksha Ek- Apsara’ reality show. ‘Agnidivya’ was my first Marathi film, for which I received the state award. Recently released ‘Karuya Udyachi Baat’ was my second film based on Global warming, but it could not reach maximum people here, though it has won Green Award from USA.
Q: How much are you enjoying in that double role in ‘Bhagyalakshmi’ ?
A: It is a good experience. In real life I am a bit Kashi and a bit Gopi. Therefore, I get a chance to play my own self through these two characters.
Q: And what about ‘Apsara Aali’ Reality show ?
A: I had an opportunity to learn so many things on the sets of this show. During childhood, I had learnt classical dance. Otherwise, I had no base in dance. Yet, being a non dancer, I could reach the last four stage. That itself is a great achievement for me.
Q: Tell us something about your forthcoming projects.
A: While I was engaged with ‘Apsara Aali’ for the past four months, besides ‘Bhagyalakshmi’ I could not do any other projects. There were offers, but due to non availability of dates, I could not take them. Now, I am going out of India and shall think about my future projects only on my return in June.
