Marathi actresses make it big in Hindi serials
Marathi artistes working in Hindi serials is not new to home viewers. In the past, well known artistes like Nitish Bharadwaj, Varsha Usgaonkar have played prominent roles in grand TV serial ‘Mahabharat’. Then we saw, many more talented artistes in Marathi like Reema Lagoo and Supriya Pilgaonkar also establishing themselves, through popular serial ‘Tu Tu Main Main’. Recently, many Marathi artistes were seen in important roles in Hindi TV serials. And, prominent among them were Neena Kulkarni, Bharati Achrekar, Usha Nadkarni , Vikram Gokhale and others.
Now, we find ‘Chala Hava Yeu Dya‘ fame Shreya Bugde Seth bagging lead role in the DD national serial ‘Albeli- kahani Pyar ki’ which has began its telecast recently on DD National channel from Monday to Friday at prime time. Shreya has found a very challenging role in Hindi and she is making her presence felt, displaying her ample talent.
Among others Neena Kulkarni has been doing well as a south Indian woman in Star Plus serial ‘Yeh hai Mohabattein’ , while Bharti Achrekar makes her presence felt in another Star Plus serial ‘Sumit Sambhal Lega’ telecast at 10 pm. But, it was surprising to find Bhargavi Chirmule performing the prominent role of Sunayna Devi, in new one hour serial ‘Siya Ka Raam’ which is Ramayana from Sita’s point of view. There are other important characters in this serial, also played by some Marathi artistes and one of them is Janhavi’s father in ‘Honar Suun Mi Hya Gharchi’, Mr. Manoj Kolhatkar.
This is a big honour for our Marathi artistes. Now, with all these popular Marathi artistes in hindi serials, our own Marathi serials will have to make their scripts interesting, as the Marathi audience is likely to shift to Hindi, to watch their favourite Marathi artistes.
During the week, we saw Asmita fame Mayuri Wagh performing rain dance on the Maiboli music channel. And, the song was from the Marathi film ‘Bandh Premache’, which had many big artistes in lead roles.
Madhuri Dixit will have a good exposure on Marathi TV, as the programme ‘Marathi Taraka’ will be telecast on Sunday 22nd November on Zee Talkies. By the way, though Madhuri was the chief guest for this show, she shook her legs, in presence of our Marathi taraka, who performed her dances, from different Hindi films

‘Sasu Day’ celebrated by ‘SasuCha Swayamvar’ team
Now days, Movie making process doesn’t stop at the last ‘cut’ or on completion of post-production work . Film promotions have gained a lot more importance these days; and the producers do not wish to ignore this. Again, each one tries to think of ‘out-of-box’ ideas, to generate enthusiasm about the movie till the release.
Friendship day! Rose day! Valentine’s day! These are the few days celebrated throughout the year world over. A new Marathi film ‘SasuCha Swayamvar’ came up with a novel idea during their Trailer launch event. They celebrated ’till-not-celebrated’ ‘Sasu’ day! (Mother-in-law day) on 12th March . Usually, during the trailer launch, songs are played on AV, but the makers of ‘Sasucha Swayamvar’ made it different by putting in a live performance, by dancers on combo of 4 songs of the film and bringing the film’s ‘Sasu’ on dais in a ‘Doli’.
While celebrating Sasu day in a unique way, they invited some of the Marathi artists who are identified for their mother-in-law roles. Usha Nadkarni (arrived much before time), Reema, Supriya Pilgaonkar , Harshada Khanvilkar and Savita Malpekar (who arrived at the fag end of the event), were present to represent ‘Sasu’. Smita Gavankar who was ably anchoring the event, requested all the guests to speak on the occasion. Ms Nadkarni, Ms Reema, Ms Pilgaonkar, Ms Khanvilkar, all of them hailed the idea of ‘Sasu day’ and wished the makers a grand success. Sachin Pilgaonkar was also present, remembered Pushkar Jog for starting his film career with him, as a child artist.
‘SasuCha Swayamvar’ is produced under the banner of Seven Seas Motion Pictures Pvt. Ltd. and produced by Santosh Parab and Sameer Parab. This film is directed by debutant director Omkar Mane, who has written the story and screenplay too; stars Pushkar Jog, Teja Deokar, Vishakha Sarpotdar, Vijay Chavan, Satish Tare (his last film), Jaywant Wadkar, Bhargavi Chirmule (guest appearance), and hindi stand-up comedian Sunil Pal. This romantic comedy film is slated for release on 24th April 2015.

Presenter: R. K. Entertaiment Producer: Trupti Bhoir Direction: Satish Motiling Story: Abhijeet Joshi Camera: Satish Motling Music: Ajeet And Sameer Cast: Makrand Anaspure, Trupti Bhoir, Usha Nadkarni, Chitra Navathe, Vikas Samudre, Narayan Jadhav, Tejaswee Patil, Mahesh Kokate, Mangesh Satpute Movie Review by: Namita Majgankar |
At a time when obesity is on the rise in our country, Trupti Bhoir comes up with a unique theme through her latest film ‘Agadbam’. Aptly titled, the film talks about the strange happenings in the life of an obese girl Najuka weighing 250 kgs with a huge structure. Najuka’s father has fixed her marriage while she was a child to his friend’s son and it’s a commitment given to a priest in the temple of Lord Lingoba.
When the communication is reached between the two parties after so many years reminding each other about the promise, the stage is set to get Najuka married to late Devkule’s son Raiba, who is not allowed to see the bride, as per the tradition. Raiba, who is otherwise desperate to get married, agrees to marry Najuka with this condition. But, when he finds Najuka in her real shape, he starts hating her. Though Najuka wins the heart of her Mother-in-law and Grand Mother-in-law; with her good nature; she fails to win over her husband.
The film’s screenplay makes you a part of their family friends developing sympathy towards Najuka. When Najuka leaves her husband’s place; Raiba realizes his mistake as he is made to understand by people around him, explaining the meaning of a good ideal wife. Finally everything ends well with a happy note.
‘Agadbam’ is the kind of film that speaks about the change that Marathi film industry has brought in technical areas. Watch the Prosthetic make-up of Trupti Bhoir in that role of Najuka and you will be stunned. The usage of VFX and DI makes the film perfect in presentation. Cinematographer and director Satish Motling has used his expertise to present the film, keeping in mind the plus points of Najuka’s character. Makarand Anaspure, Trupti Bhoir, Usha Nadkarni
Trupti has dared to present herself in that get-up throughout the film, except for two songs in dream sequence , where she appears normal.
Dialogues of the film have been written by Mangesh Kulkarni, keeping in mind the mixture of village and city lifestyle. Few dialogues to impress upon the financing institution like IDBI bank were uncalled for, but they have been used to make their media partners happy. The screenplay of the film is otherwise well presented, with good editing work. You will never feel bored throughout the film. Makarand Anaspure as Raiba and Usha Nadkarni as his mother fit in perfectly into their respective roles. Trupti has played her character perfectly, to derive sympathy from the audience. She has paid more attention on her body language, especially her walking style and her voice. Music of the film is good, with two meaningful songs and one dhamaal song inviting the attention.
In all, ‘Agadbam’ is a well presented entertaining film, with a message. The film is sure to invite the attention of viewers, even other than Maharashtrians; for its novel theme. It will not be surprising, if the film maker receives offers for a remake in other languages.
I would love to play Big B’s mother – Usha Nadkarni
Over the years, Usha Nadkarni, the most popular character artiste from Marathi and Hindi film industry has played the mother of many popular artistes. But, when asked, as to who was her best beta or beti; she refuses to comment. “I don’t believe in such relations. One should be sincere while performing that act.” She says. But, when you ask her as to whose mother she would love to play, she sportingly admits one and only Big ‘B’- Amitabh Bachchan’s name.
Usha Nadkarni
Yes, it will be a great honour for an actress of her caliber to play the Mom of Big B. Even actress Vidya Balan had the privilege of doing so in the film ‘Paa’. In the past even an actress like Rohini Hattangadi with tremendous potential, played his mother in the film ‘Agnipath’. So, Usha has all the hopes in days to come. A versatile actress, she has been in the field of acting for almost 38 years now. She began her career with marathi stage and entered at the competitive level with INT’s play ‘Guru’. Thereafter, she performed with Nana Patelar in famous play ‘Purush’ and later played character roles in marathi and Hindi films. Some of her popular films were ‘Vaastav’, ‘Hathyar’, ‘Yeh Tera Ghar Yeh Mera Ghar’, ‘Tu Chor Main Sipahee’, ‘Yashwant’, ‘Gundaraj’, ‘Lakshmanrekha’ and N. Chandra’s ‘Narsimha’, where she played an important role of Narsimha’s mother.
Usha Nadkarni actually shot into fame after she played two important roles in Hindi TV serials; namely Shantabai in ‘Kuch Iss Tarah’ and as Savita Damodar Deshmukh in ongoing ‘Pavitra Rishta’. It was a pleasure talking to this straight-thinking woman, who spoke very frankly about what she feels about this entertainment industry. Incidentally, she is playing the title role in forthcoming marathi film ‘What an Idea Mai!’, as the movie revolves around her. But, when you ask her as to whether this movie would change her image, she tries to divert your attention to her another film ‘Deool’ where she also plays an equally important role. ‘Deool’ is is also my forthcoming film and it’s a masterpiece and a timely film,” she adds .
Talking about her slow but steady progress into this acting field, she recalls her younger days, when she performed on stage. “After I performed in plays like ‘Guru’ for INT and ‘Purush’ in the company of Nana Patekar, I gained a lot of confidence as an actress. But, I didn’t believe in begging for the roles. I have never gone to any producer and asked for a favor. Whatever was there for me, always came to me. Even while on the sets, I paid attention on my work, rather than my make up and costumes. If I was required to play a middle class woman from a chawl, I paid less attention on on my make and tried to present myself in natural form. After all, acting makes all the difference,” she adds.
Over the years Usha has played safe game by not leaving her job for full time acting. “I worked with BMC for few years and then with Dena Bank for over 20 years, till I took voluntary retirement few years ago,” she says. “Those days it was a risk leaving your job and even after taking Voluntary retirement, I had gone back to my employers to take my option back; but they didn’t allow it. Now, I am happy that I am getting good offers and people are appreciating my performance,” she concludes.
